Gelateria Vatta

A meeting point in Opicina on the karstic plateau
Via Nazionale, 38
Trieste 34016
Italy
The Vatta ice cream shop has offered refreshments and excellent ice cream in the heart of Opicina (a village fifteen minutes from Trieste) for many years. This is a very large premises, light and clean, and a traditional Sunday afternoon stop-off for hundreds of Triestini who come to take an ice cream or hot chocolate before a walk through the woods or after a trip on the historic rack tram that connects the capital to the village. The ice cream sundaes and the cakes are all excellent.

Il Pinguino

Ice cream parlour on the sea shore
Molo Pescheria, 1
Trieste 34121
Italy
+39 40 30 6969
This small ice cream parlour is situated in front of the Aquarium, on the old fishing jetty (5 minutes on foot from Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia). It is only open between June and September, and is open until late at night. It offers a huge choice of different flavours which can be combined to form delicious ice crea, cones (along with chocolate, fruit, pop-corn, liquors, and other things). You can eat your ice cream at the tables located about 5 meters from the sea, and it is especially nice during the evening when the buildings along the sea shore are lit up, and you can see the illuminated fishing boats on the sea. The ice cream is served in cardboard cups. The prices are fairly high, and there are no waiters, however it is still worth going. Everyone goes here in the Summer. It is easy to park nearby, and there is music playing in the background.

L'Oasi del gelato

Enjoy your ice cream in the large garden
Via dell'Eremo, 259
Trieste 34142
Italy
+39 40 91 0342
The ice cream here is particularly good. There are tens of fruit flavours and many combinations to be tasted as well as tasty milk and fruit shakes. They also serve macedonia and cassata (a slice of ice cream between two thin wafers), as well as cocktails, coffee and hot chocolate. If you need another reason to come here, it has to be because of the fantastic, large garden in the back, which few other ice cream parlours can boast. It can also be hired out for parties.

Miramare

Lovely ice cream parlour by the sea
Viale Miramare, 279
Trieste 34100
Italy
Recently opened, this has quickly become a favourite with both tourists and locals. Near the extraordinary castle from which it takes its name, this ice cream parlour has an enviable position and attracts a host of young people at night. Along the road that is the main entrance to the city, around twenty minutes from the centre, it has a lovely garden near the sea as well as a large terrace that is covered over in winter. It offers ice cream, cocktails, coffee, fruit juices and liqueurs as well as snacks, such as pasta, steak and good salads. This is truly a lovely place, run by young people with waiters who look as if they have just stepped off the catwalk!

Pipolo

One of Trieste's historical ice cream parlours, quality guaranteed
Viale Miramare, 127
Trieste 34136
Italy
This is one of Triest's historical ice cream parlors with a name that guarantees quality. Pipolo, in the heart of the lovely Barcola district has a large lounge and terrace where you can enjoy amazing ice creams, coffees, hot chocolate, fruit juices, slushes and much more. You are not far from the sea here and a lovely green pine wood, at the beginning of one of Trieste's most popular walks (around 6km from the Castello di Miramare the lovely but unfortunate home of Massimiliano and Carlotta d'Austria.) Very busy in summer, both night and day, Pipolo is for many a real focal point even if the décor, although not too bad, does seem rather old-fashioned.

Zampolli

A small but exquisite and very busy ice cream parlour.
Via Ghega, 10
Trieste 34132
Italy
+39 40 36 4868
You would never think it but this small ice-cream parlour (not far fronm the train station, on a busy, noisy road) is the best in the city. The queues at the counter and the dozens of cars parked haphazardly in front of the shop, (especially in the evening because the wardens will rarely turn a blind eye in the daytime) are proof of this. Here the ice cream is really extraordinary, the fruit of decades of experience, and great attention paid to detail in the production process. When you try these ice creams you will not be disappointed. Specialities include the mascarpone, and the puffed rice ice cream which you can never have enough of, and will find nowhere else but here. The tarts and cream horns are also good.
