Al Nuovo Antico Pavone

High class restaurant
Riva Grumula, 32
Trieste 34123
Italy
+39 40 30 3899
Al Nuovo Antico Pavone was renovated and relocated a few years ago (hence the name nuovo - new). It is situated on Trieste's shore and offers excellent service and one of the best fish menus in the whole of the city. There is a room which is separate from the rest of the restaurant with space for 10 people, this can be booked for business dinners or special occasions. The restaurant has a small terrace with around 30 places, however it faces onto quite a busy road, even in the evening. In reality you just get used to it, certain delicacies can make you forget everything else. You should try the tagliolini with mullet roe and the pappardelle with scampi and rocket, the best dish in the restaurant in our opinion. For the second course don't miss out on the turbot with lemon. The Catalan cream is extraordinary, the wine list pretty good. To sum it all up, you will go home feeling very satisfied, and the extra lire you may have spent will be worth it.

Da Baffo

Inexpensive restaurant
Via Negrelli, 16
Trieste 34143
Italy
+39 40 30 5696
This trattoria is in the heart of a residential district and therefore slightly off the normal tourist route, but this is no reason not to visit the restaurant belonging to the man with the most famous moustache (hence the restaurant's name) in Trieste. In reality, distances in a small city like Trieste are not really very far anyway and in a twenty minute walk you can reach the San Giusto castle, one of the city's most famous sights. This is more like a pretty trattoria than a real restaurant. The little garden is very nice, while the interiors are a bit anonymous. They serve both meat and fish here. The recipes are all invented by the owner. The choice of sliced hams and cheeses is excellent. The local dishes and products are the best things on the menu. The prices are extremely affordable.

Dino

A family place on the seafront
Salita al Promontorio, 2
Trieste 34123
Italy
+39 40 30 5094 / +39 40 31 1470
Dino's is not one of those restaurants that follow the latest fashion but a small, intimate and familiar place, and perhaps it is worth a visit just for this. Two steps away from the seafront (near the Bianchi swimming pool and about 10 minutes from Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia on foot), it has been run since 1978 by the Aureli family who offer a praised and enjoyable menu. Apart from the fish, which is always fresh, you can also try some truly special first courses like spaghetti, allo scoglio, crespelle with salmon, tagliatelle with scampi and superb risottos. The sweets are also good. The wines of the Marche are noted amongst the selection available as it was the region where the owner was born.

Risoteca

The restaurant has more than 20 types of risotto
Via Economo, 14
Trieste 34123
Italy
+39 40 31 1262
This restaurant demonstrates that its not only the Chinese who know how to cook rice. It is the ideal place to come for a slightly different lunch or dinner. It offers more than 20 types of risotto (including Japanese, Indonesian, and Portuguese) which will surprise your palate, they come with meat or vegetables. The rice with scampi and rocket is recommended. The second courses are mostly fish based, but that is not why people come to eat here. Make sure that you book because there are only 30 places. It is not a high class restaurant, but the creativeness of its cuisine is what counts. The Risoteca is near the central branch of the city's only daily paper, Il Piccolo.

Sacra Osteria

Trattoria near the seashore
Via Campo Marzio, 13
Trieste 34123
Italy
+39 40 30 4791
The "Sacra Osteria" is near the seashore and not more than 15 minutes walk from Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, the heart of the city. The cuisine is generally fish based, but also includes other things. There are 120 places, which double during the summer when you can eat outside on the terrace. There is a buffet with various sliced meats and cold snacks which are available throughout the day. There is an extensive wine list, which offers excellent local wine. This restaurant's clientele is mainly made up of families and during the day, people who work nearby, include lots of journalists, as the restaurant is right in front of the local newspaper offices. The best dishes include spaghetti with clams, the stewed chicken and the gnocchi with goulash (a Hungarian sauce made with meat and paprika). On Fridays the restaurant serves cod all'istriana and fish stock with polenta.
