Caffè Tommaseo

The oldest and most luxurious cafe
Piazza Tommaseo 4/c
Trieste 34121
Italy
+39 40 36 2666
http://www.caffetommaseo.com/
This must be the most luxurious, as well as the oldest cafe in Trieste. Opened in 1825, in what was once called Piazza dei Negozianti, Caffè Tommaseo is a favorite with artists and intellectuals and continues to host cultural events, meetings and press conferences. It is a bright place with splendid stucco decorations that date back to the early 20th Century. Caffè Tommaseo offers a vast choice of tea and good sandwiches and desserts, as well as excellent coffee and hot chocolate.

Juice

Live music and imaginative cocktails
Via Madonnina, 10
Trieste 34131
Italy
+39 40 760 0341
This is probably the only place of its kind in Trieste. Juice is a small (but perfectly formed!) bar located in a busy street, close to Barriera Vecchia. One of the few meeting places for lovers of jazz, funk and blues—some weekends see live music by upcoming young bands. The décor is Irish. There are about 40 tables and the menu consists of sandwiches and bruschettas (savoury toasts and canapés). The drinks are unbeatable: good beers and imaginative cocktails. No chance of finding a place to park nearby, so make up your mind to walk a bit.

Machiavelli

One of the most famous discos in Trieste
Viale Miramare, 285
Trieste 34136
Italy
+39 40 4 4104
This is the oldest disco in Trieste and probably the most famous, as well as the most elegant. It was built from the ashes of the glorious "Big Ben," a place that was founded in 1976, modeled on the success of the film, Saturday Night Fever. Machiavelli offers themed evenings and is popular with university students. The furnishing is modern and there is a lovely garden with tables around a fountain. It is in a great location near the sea, but it is difficult to park nearby.

Tea Room

Tasty snacks for quick lunches.
Via Cadorna, 2
Trieste 34124
Italy
+39 40 36 5806
This tearoom has been tastefully and elegantly decorated. It has cozy seating areas and small tables which give the place a warm, yet peaceful atmosphere. They serve lovely sweets and cakes, coffee and really thick chocolate. The Tearoom changes its role at lunchtime when it is invaded by students and people who work nearby. At this time it serves delicious panini, stuffed toasts with olives, tarts and generously-filled sandwiches. These are quickly snapped up by the hungry hordes. In the evening they also serve aperitif, cocktail and other drinks.

Tor Cucherna

Characteristic bar of the old city
Via Chiauchiara, 5
Trieste 34121
Italy
+39 40 36 8874
You might not like the building (refined); you might not like the kind of music they play (really loud); you might not even like the drinks and cocktails they serve; however, you will be enchanted by this American Bar's location in an ancient alleyway of the old city wall. Mainly frequented by young people, they offer a wide range of cocktails with a good selection of bar nibbles and sweets. The Cucherna tower also sells lunch and dinner, offering pasta and meat dishes. It has wonderful open air seating amid the old brick walls and silent houses.
