Piazza Carlo Felice, 50 Turin 10121 Italy +39 11 54 1992 |
Two minutes from Porta Nuova, the central station of Turin, this confectioners tempts anyone going on a journey to take with them some Torinese delicacy. The retailers of Prunotto Antonio liqueurs was set up in the same location in 1883, who also made the rich, external cornice and the precious plaster of the vault which still exists today. In 1926, Avvignano Silfredo, took over and began work on preparing the 'Confetteria Avvignano'. Nowadays, it feels as if nothing has changed since then. The plaster sign between the entrance and the window, which is made to look like bronze, has become the symbol of this prestigious place. The interior was done by Quaglino, the antiques dealer. The wooden counter, with green marble from the Alps, is decorated, as is the window furniture with festoons and strings with a variety of knots varnished in gold. Pure gold varnish and gilding is also used on the walls and ceiling. Avvignano sells the best makes of sweets, and is a great place to buy pralines, truffles and special chocolates with grappa. The chocolate lovers triangles |
Via Cagliari, 15a Turin 10153 Italy |
It is said that at the beginning of the 19th Century, a Piedmontese invented a cocoa pastry making machine that mixed it with sugar and vanilla to solidify the chocolate, which up until then had only been known as a drink. This was how chocolate bars, single chocolates and easter eggs began to be produced. In 1865, the successful union of exotic cocoa and round hazelnuts, became Gianduia which took its name from the Torinese mask and was the origins of chocolate production in the classic triangular shape, wrapped in golden or silver paper. Therefore, it is no coincidence that this Torinese workshop, faithful to tradition, offers all kinds of gianduiotti to its clientèle, including coffee flavors, mini ones called turinot, gianduia cream and easter eggs. This is undoubtedly the best known department store in the city. Spending the afternoon admiring the shops has always been a popular pastime for the Torinesi, and this is also true at night when this shop is lit up. Thanks to its seven floors, in the heart of the city centre, Rinascente can satisfy any shopping need. Everything can be found here, homeware in the basement, an elegant perfumery by the entrance, and on other floors there are shoes and clothes of the latest fashions, beauty salons, ornaments, books, records, jewellery and much more. Typical dairy shop |
Corso Re Umberto I, 56 Turin 10128 Italy +39 011 599 775 |
This dairy dates back to the 30's. Today it stays open by running a bar and icecream parlour. The history of the old dairy is visible in the building itself. It offers a good selection of cheeses, grissini and foccaccia bread. At the bar you should try the coffe and hot chocolate with whipped cream and the Galup and Virginia pannettone. The "chantrilly" and "malaga al moscato" icecreams must be tried. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The largest shopping centre |
Via Crea, 10 Turin, Torino 10095 Italy +39 11 770 9703 |
Be aware when entering this huge shopping centre, because however strong your resolve not to spend may be, you will not leave empty handed. It is almost impossible to overcome the temptation posed by the 180 shops, the great supermarket, the department stores, the bars and the restaurants. Moreover, parents can enjoy hassle-free shopping with their minds at rest that their children are being looked after in the Baby Club. They are kept entertained with toys, games, and television shows all supervised by the patient babysitters. The centre even provides respite from the muggy August heat as it is fully air conditioned and has a terrace which is often used for live shows. However, one black spot does tarnish all this splendour, and that is the lack of parking. The 5000 spaces available are not always enough for the large number of shoppers who descend on the shopping centre, especially on a Saturday afternoon. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Often trying to persuade children to read can feel like one of Hercules' labours. However, it can be made less difficult by bringing your children to a bookshop which is suited to them. The Libreria del ragazzi is, in fact, specialized in books for children between the ages of 0-18. At the foundation of the vast range of available titles is the conviction that reading must be seen as a game and also a pleasure. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Piazza della Repubblica Turin, Turin 10122 Italy |
A few steps away from the Royal Palace and the Palatine gates, is the Porta Palazzo market in the Piazza della Repubblica. It is the most characteristic market in Turin, and takes its name from a disused railway station. It is a place that must be visited to see how Turin is changing. Apart from fresh fruits and vegetables, and the best prices in Turin, produce from all over the world can be found here. Next to Chinese supermarkets, Morrocan hairdressers and Indian video rentals, you will find colourful stalls of oriental spices, exotic fruits, aromatic herbs, and Piedmontese specialities. Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, 26 Turin 10125 Italy +39 11 817 0113 |
