Turin 10121
Italy
+39 11 54 1992
Two minutes from Porta Nuova, the central station of Turin, this confectioners tempts anyone going on a journey to take with them some Torinese delicacy. The retailers of Prunotto Antonio liqueurs was set up in the same location in 1883, who also made the rich, external cornice and the precious plaster of the vault which still exists today. In 1926, Avvignano Silfredo, took over and began work on preparing the 'Confetteria Avvignano'. Nowadays, it feels as if nothing has changed since then. The plaster sign between the entrance and the window, which is made to look like bronze, has become the symbol of this prestigious place. The interior was done by Quaglino, the antiques dealer. The wooden counter, with green marble from the Alps, is decorated, as is the window furniture with festoons and strings with a variety of knots varnished in gold. Pure gold varnish and gilding is also used on the walls and ceiling. Avvignano sells the best makes of sweets, and is a great place to buy pralines, truffles and special chocolates with grappa.

The chocolate lovers triangles
Via Cagliari, 15a
Turin 10153

It is said that at the beginning of the 19th Century, a Piedmontese invented a cocoa pastry making machine that mixed it with sugar and vanilla to solidify the chocolate, which up until then had only been known as a drink. This was how chocolate bars, single chocolates and easter eggs began to be produced. In 1865, the successful union of exotic cocoa and round hazelnuts, became Gianduia which took its name from the Torinese mask and was the origins of chocolate production in the classic triangular shape, wrapped in golden or silver paper. Therefore, it is no coincidence that this Torinese workshop, faithful to tradition, offers all kinds of gianduiotti to its clientèle, including coffee flavors, mini ones called turinot, gianduia cream and easter eggs.

A few steps away from the Royal Palace and the Palatine gates, is the Porta Palazzo market in the Piazza della Repubblica. It is the most characteristic market in Turin, and takes its name from a disused railway station. It is a place that must be visited to see how Turin is changing. Apart from fresh fruits and vegetables, and the best prices in Turin, produce from all over the world can be found here. Next to Chinese supermarkets, Morrocan hairdressers and Indian video rentals, you will find colourful stalls of oriental spices, exotic fruits, aromatic herbs, and Piedmontese specialities. The people who visit are young; the stall holders polite, helpful and ready to chat with everyone.

This is a rather unusual wineshop. In fact it used to be an ancient tavern, dating back to 1890, which was then transformed into a real wine "boutique". It specialises in limited production Piedmontese wines.

This is one of Turin's historical cake shops, and has been run by the family for three generations.

S.I.D.A. was founded in 1926, and specialises in typical Turin mignons, assorted pralines, and in sweet, but also savoury cakes. However, its true strong point is the "Bocon d'Or" (or "Golden Mouthful"), a cake made of almonds and hazelnuts which can be kept for a long time.

Piazza Benefica

Giardino Martini
Via Duchessa Jolanda angolo via Principi d'Acaja
Turin 10138

To get to this market, ask for Piazza Benefica which is the name the market is known by. Located in one of the better off neighbourhoods, the market reflects this fact with the goods it sells. You will find designer dresses (perhaps worn once and forgotten by one of the wealthy), velvet jackets, silk shirts, jewellery and even antiques. The difficulty of finding the market is rewarded by the surprises you will find though a little retro in taste.

The Porta Nuova station is also known as Central Station. It opens onto Piazza Carlo Felice, which separates it from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. A majestic and imposing building, it could be said to be one of the most successful railway stations of the 19th century. One of its most interesting features is its façade designed by Mazzucchetti and Ceppi (1866-1868). In the lower half of the facade there are many porticos and elegant arches. During the Christmas season it is decorated with an illumination implant which makes its structure stand out.

Porta Susa

Turin's second station
Piazza XVIII dicembre, 8
Turin 10122
Italy
+39 (0)11 53 8513
Porta Susa is Turin's second most important train station. Many of the city commuters pass through here each day, but also many tourists. The Paris-Turin overnight train arrives here, for example. Built in 1856 and recently enlarged, the station stands in Piazza 18th December, at the end of Via Cernaia and a couple of steps from Piazza Statuto. It is connected to the rest of the city by trams and buses but suffers from a serious shortage of parking spaces. All those that do exist are also parking meters. Inside there are bars, newspaper kiosks, and a recently constructed McDonalds.
