Old river bed, now gardens |
Puente a Turia Valencia 46023 Spain |
The old bed of the Turia river was converted into a series of very different gardens and the site of some of the most important buildings recently constructed in the city. This is where you will find the Palau de la Música concert hall and the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias a complex including a planetarium, museum and oceanography centre. The oldest bridges and walkways crossing the Turia date back from between the 14th and the 17th centuries; some are particularly noteworthy for their artistic value, such as the Puente del Mar or the Puente de Santiago Calatrava, also known as the Peineta (comb). Among all the different gardens within the old river bed, one of the most popular is the children's play area, called Gulliver, which holds a permanent exhibition of miniatures. Where Lladrò is made |
Carretera de Alboraya, s/n Tavernes Blanques Valencia 46016 Spain +34 96 318 7000 http://www.lladro.es |
"In the 1950s, the Lladró brothers started up their business in a small workshop in Almácera, a town surrounded by the fields of Valencia. This is how the porcelain giant began. Today, Lladró figurines are made in what's called The City of Porcelain, an industrial complex occupying more than 100000m2 of floor space in Tavernes Blanques, a small town only 6km from Valencia. More than 2200 people work there, most of them craftsmen. Visiting the City of Porcelain is a privilege reserved exclusively for members of the Lladró Collectors Society. The rest of us have no choice but to stop by the headquarters and shop on Poeta Querol, 9, in downtown Valencia, where you can get more information about the company as well as admire their collection or even do a bit of shopping." Nine holes |
Carretera Ribarroja, Km. 4 Manises Valencia 46940 Spain +34 96 152 3804 / +34 96 152 1871 |
Having only nine holes creates a special atmosphere that is very welcoming to families and children; in fact many people were introduced to the game of golf at a very young age here. You'll find this same feeling in the Club House (with restaurant and bar) where children have free reign over the place. Don't be fooled, however, into thinking that this is an easy course to play in: the greens are surrounded by bunkers and the fairways are narrow and flanked by pine trees, meaning that any wayward shot is severely punished. The number 7 hole (4 par) is particularly famous for this. The course was built in 1954 and is the oldest in Valencia by some 14 years. Public transport will not take you to this golf course, but there is a bus every ten minutes to Manises from the bus station: CVT Manises. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nice seaside town |
Valencia 46400 Spain +34 96 351 0417 |
This seaside town is only 40km from Valencia. Cullera is in Ribera Baixa county, where the Xùquer river reaches the sea. The town itself is on flatlands, with the sea and river on one side and the Serra de Corbera mountains (more than 500m tall) on the other. Also, a part of Albufera Natural Park is within this county. Cullera is an important town for tourism in the area and it has quality beaches. It's also interesting for its cultural and historic attractions, such as its 13th century castle or the Virgen del Castillo sanctuary. It's worth the short trip for the swim or just to get out of the city for the day. Commuter trains leave frequently from Estación del Norte station in Valencia. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Alternative way to visit Valencia |
Calle del Museo 7 Valencia 46003 Spain +34 96 392 3239 |
This has to be one of the most fun and economical ways of seeing the city of Valencia, or simply getting some exercise. For those that have never seen an Ergobike, it is a cross between a push bike and a comfy chair you lean back on, while your feet are raised above your hips and the handle bar is between your knees. It sounds and will feel a little strange at first but after five minutes you begin to wonder why all push bikes aren't built like this. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located by the old river bed of the Túria River, Gulliver is a work of engineering made for children of all ages, based on the central character in the story by Jonathan Swift. Children can slide down his jacket, climb up the ropes on his arms, visit the city of Liliput inside him, and do a number of other activities spread out all over the figure. Gulliver was constructed in the workshops of master fallero artists of the city. These same artists are responsible for the incredible and satirical fallas which are assembled and then burnt as part of the Fallas festival. This one, however, is here to stay. It was made in various different pieces and then assembled, making it a dream come true for Valencian children. Admission: free Review © 2007, Wcities |

This oceanographic park, the only one of its kind in Europe, has been designed by Felix Candela. Former island of the L'Albufera |
Autovia Sue de Valenci Valencia 46012 Spain +34 96 162 0066 |
El Palmar, which was an island in L'Albufera natural reserve until the lagoon was partially dried in the mid-Forties, is a must for those looking for the most beautiful scenery south of Valencia. You can also enjoy local cuisine here: all i pebre de anguilas (baby eels with garlic and pepper) and espardenyà. The scenic route runs between Dehesa Forest and the lake, crossing fields and palisades covered with rosebays. The fishing community, the annual lottery for fishing privileges (redolín), and the pilgrimage to Cristo de la Salut (Christ of Good Health) celebrated in the lluent (center of the lake), are traditions that live on, as if taken straight from one of Sorolla's costumbrista paintings. This festival is celebrated the Monday after Easter Sunday, which is the most important day of Semana Santa (Holy Week) and a holiday throughout the Valencian Community. People head to the countryside (or the Old Túria Riverbed) to celebrate Easter with a picnic traditionally including longaniza sausage and the Easter mona (a bun with a hard-boiled egg inside). The tradition, which dates from the Muslim era, states that the egg should be broken on a companion's forehead. Dancing the tarara, jumping rope, and flying a cachirulo (kite) are also must-do activities on this day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Most Important Archaeological Site |
Plaza de la Almoina, s/n Valencia 46003 Spain |
Plaza de l'Almoina (or Alms Plaza) is a small square situated next to the Cathedral that has gained great importance for hiding some of the greatest archaeological treasures in the city. Excavation in Plaza de l'Almoina started in 1985. Four years later the former building called San Vicente's Jail was demolished, and to everyone's surprise they discovered important remnants of past civilizations: What appeared to be part of a Roman road, a Visigothic funeral chapel, Arab baths, and more. These are just some of the important finds in this plaza. In the archeological site on San Vincente Martir, you will find an audiovisual explanation of this plaza and its archaeological treasures in three alternating languages: Spanish, Valencian or English. Valencia's Maritime Station is one of the most modern in Spain. Each year more than 500,000 people depart from the Passenger Terminal on their way to the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, and Genova. In addition to human passengers, it is the top Spanish port and one of the most important European ones for cargo (containers) shipping. Next to the modernist Edificio del Reloj (clock building) and Edificio de los Tinglados (warehouse) lies the dock where the Golondrinas (pleasure boats) leave from; these provide daily tours around the beautiful inner harbour. Most important Roman legacy |
Valencia 46500 Spain +34 96 351 0417 |
Sagunto is a town located not very far from the city of Valencia towards the north. It is in the county called "El Camp de Morvedre". This town is known by historians for its fierce and tragic resistance to Hanibal's forces in 220 B.C. This resistance lasted 8 months and in the end, the citizens set fire to the city and all died. Today Sagunto is, with reason, the most visted city in the province of Valencia. In this town you will find a Roman theater, one of the most important Roman legacies in all of Spain. There is also a medieval castle built on top of the remains of forts from previous centuries, while serving as site for many important historical events and battles. Because of its size, it had to be divided into seven different parts in order to be defended. Other monuments of both historic and artistic interest that make the trip to this town worth it are the church of El Salvador from the 13th century, the church of Santa Maria from the 14th and 15th centuries, the old Jewish quarter, and the Hermita de la Sangre hermitage. Transport: Trains leave the Estacion del Norte station in Valencia every half hour. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Centrally located |
Los Centelles, 19 Valencia 46006 Spain +34 96 374 2112 |
This gym has every type of equipment you could possibly need to build muscle or get in shape and simply look your best: From the most modern of bikes and treadmills to free weights, squash courts, saunas and sunbeds. They also run step and aerobics classes. Its central location and relative comfort mean that it is a bit more expensive than gyms in other areas of town, but if you've only got a little bit of time to spare during lunch, it's the perfect solution. Landerer, 5 Valencia 46003 Spain +34 96 391 2442 |
This charming small theater is owned by the Valencian government and can seat 400. It is dedicated entirely to programs for children and families. Many of the shows they put on are their own creations which are very high quality. They will also bring in other companies from around Spain for special festivals and events. During the week school groups come to this theater and there is a very long waiting list. It is only open to the general public on Sundays. Review © 2007, Wcities |

High-tech cinema and planetarium |
Avenida Instituto Obrero de Valencia, s/n Valencia 46013 Spain +34 96 335 5330 http://www.cac.es |
This architectural marvel designed by Santiago Calatrava was conceived as a very special cinema and planetarium. Here the spectator can in the same space experience the sensations of a conventional planetarium while enjoying the images offered in IMAX format. Its astronomic projection system is controlled by computers in order to produce a complete representation of the sky and the planets on a surface that is 24 meters in diameter and at a 30-degree angle. The clear, sharp images projected, along with the size of the screen and the quality of the sound, achieve an exceptional realism that will transport the audience into the next galaxy. International athletics & cycling races |
Calle de Cocentaina Valencia 46035 Spain +34 96 390 4932 / +34 96 390 4935 |
Built in 1992 this is a very modern indoor sports complex of international repute. The European indoor athletics championships for 2000 were held in this building and many international and national indoor cycle pursuits have taken place here. Given this fact it is not surprising that the headquarters for the Cycling Federation of Valencia has also found a home here. The prices and dates for the spectator events obviously vary and you should contact the Velodrome directly for more details. If you turn up on a Sunday and there is no special event taking place, you can watch some of Valencia's top cyclists being put through their paces on the pursuit track. It is very impressive to see these supreme athletes shooting past just a couple of feet from you. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Zoo in del Real gardens |
Calle de San Pío V Valencia 46010 Spain +34 96 360 0822 |
The Valencia Zoo can be found in the Jardines del Real park and garden, commonly known as los Viveros. This is perhaps the most popular park in the city and it fills with families out for the day. The zoo, itself, is not very big, though it does contain a large variety of different animal species. The most frequent visitors tend to be school children on excursions, having fun and learning at the same time, but who said fun was just for kids? Review © 2007, Wcities |
