"This is a large disco where good Spanish music reigns supreme, although other music styles and rhythms are played. They also organize decent concerts by fairly new bands and singers all year long. Plaza Fray Luis Colomer, 4-AC Valencia 46021 Spain +34 96 393 2677 |
This cinema is characterized by the types of films it shows. It has the reputation of being an underground type of place with a very specific audience. The movies are in general not blockbusters, but rather independent budget films from Europe and Latin America. Another point worth mentioning is that all the movies are shown in original version with subtitles in Spanish. At the theatre entrance, you'll also find programs with all the critiques of the film and information about the film, actors and directors. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Interesting exhibits in old warehouse |
Plaza de San Luis Beltrán 1 Valencia 46003 Spain +34 96 352 5478 |
This building was constructed in the 16th century and served as a warehouse (hence the name, almudín from the Arabic) which stored the city's grain. Previously, it was also the site of the Paleontologic Museum but is nowadays dedicated to temporary exhibitions, ranging from art to archaeology and ethnology. The building was recently restored and they recovered the deteriorated wall paintings that depict scenes of everyday life in 16th century Valencia. The Almudín was declared a national historical and artistic monument shortly before its restoration. The square onto which this building opens is also one of the most attractive in the city and another good reason to visit. Admission: free Review © 2007, Wcities |

Alternative concerts & scene |

If alternative and independent music is your thing, then Barracabar, in the Cánovas area, is the place where you belong. There's always a good scene to be found and, of course, good music. Plus, they have concerts on every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday after midnight. Not to be missed. Just to give you an idea of the type of music you'll hear, here are a few examples: Beck, Blur, Adorable, James, The Posies, Oasis, Mathew Sweet, Suede, Morphine, Radiohead, Big Soul, Manic Street Preacher, The Chemical Brothers, Edwyn Collins, Luna, Brad, Placebo, and many more. Prices are a bit higher than in other places, but the music (live or otherwise) is worth it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Live music every night |
Polo y Peyrolon, 15 Valencia 46021 Spain +34 96 393 3663 |
Valencia's only live music venue that offers concerts nearly every day of the week. You'll hear mainly jazz, although bossa nova, blues, soul and even Latin groups turn up to play from time to time as well. It's a great place to hang out with friends and have a drink. If there's no live music on, you'll find the background music (soul, R&B, jazz or reggae) is more than a good enough substitute. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This locale is more than just a café-bar, it is a real show. Café Bahiano is the place to be if you want to experience a real Brazilian night. Everything will make you feel in Río de Janeiro, the drinks, the music and the atmosphere. The star drink here, not surprisingly, is caipirinha. And if you drop by on a Friday or Saturday night, sip on your drink while listening to a live band from Brazil. If you're the daring sort, clear a space for yourself to dance in. There are live tango shows every Thursday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Filmoteca is temporarily closed for renovations. Screenings are now being held in the Salon de Actos de IVAM Calle Guillem de Castro 118, and the Institut Français, Moro Ziet 6. The Filmoteca is one of the oldest cinemas in Valencia. It's subsidised by the government of Valencia. This cinema bases its programme of films on already released films. These are usually included in seasons that correspond to an actor, a director, a theme, a cinematic tendency or a different school. These can be either foreign or Spanish productions. It's worth noting that it is one of the few cinemas that screen short films. It is, at the same time, one of the most active cinemas during the annual Muestra de Cine del Mediterranni (Mediterranean Film Festival). Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Palacio de la Musica is situated in the old river bed of the Turia. It was constructed in 1987 and is one of the banner buildings of modern Valencia, within what's known as the vanguard architecture movement in the city. One of its most distinguising features is the glass enclosure that looks out on the gardens in the Turia. From here you can watch the fountains that have been designed to spout to the beat of the music heard from the Palau throughout the garden. The building was built specifically to promote culture and that's exactly what it has done. Concerts, operas, ballets, musicals, conferences, presentations, and all sorts of other educational activities have been and continue to be held inside and outside the building. Construction on these large guard towers was finished in 1391. They were once the main entrance to the city in the long-since destroyed wall. They offer a perfect view of the old riverbed of the Turia river and its surroundings. From an architectural point of view, they are both pentagon-shaped, connected by a common gallery, and decorated with gothic designs on the borders. On the top there are parapets, and, around the entire structure, you can see the remains of the old moat. These towers also serve a purpose during the famous Cridà, or announcement. This is a popular event announcing the arrival of the most important festival in Valencia- the Fallas- encouraging everyone to participate. You can enter the towers and climb to the top for the fantastic views of the city they offer. Admission: free Review © 2007, Wcities |

This architectural marvel designed by Santiago Calatrava was conceived as a very special cinema and planetarium. Here the spectator can in the same space experience the sensations of a conventional planetarium while enjoying the images offered in IMAX format. Its astronomic projection system is controlled by computers in order to produce a complete representation of the sky and the planets on a surface that is 24 meters in diameter and at a 30-degree angle. The clear, sharp images projected, along with the size of the screen and the quality of the sound, achieve an exceptional realism that will transport the audience into the next galaxy. Its ultra-modern design, high-tech facilities and huge capacity have turned this new conference centre in to a venue of first choice in Spain for all types of conferences, seminars and conventions. You now have to book your event in here two years in advance. It's the work of famous British architect Norman Foster and opened in 1998. It can be used for cultural events as well. Victorian decor & live music |
Pizarro, 31 Valencia 46004 Spain +34 96 351 7578 |
One of this bar's main attractions is without a doubt its decor. It's made out to look like the set of a horror film with the action taking place in the 19th century. The thick red curtains hanging from the walls, mirrors all over the place, candelabras and much more all add to this effect. The other appeal here is the live music. From Sunday to Tuesday, it's a piano bar, and on Wednesday night's they have live jazz sessions. The rest of the week (Thursday to Saturday), it's a good place to come for a drink and dance to the music if you can make room for yourself. Review © 2007, Wcities |
