Large disco & live concerts
San Vicente, 305

Spain
+34 96 382 2958
http://www.akuarela.com
"This is a large disco where good Spanish music reigns supreme, although other music styles and rhythms are played. They also organize decent concerts by fairly new bands and singers all year long. The club attracts a fairly youngish crowd, mostly twenty-somethings. But everyone who comes here, comes to dance the night away and have a good time.

Almudín

Interesting exhibits in old warehouse
Plaza de San Luis Beltrán 1
Valencia 46003
Spain
+34 96 352 5478
This building was constructed in the 16th century and served as a warehouse (hence the name, almudín from the Arabic) which stored the city's grain. Previously, it was also the site of the Paleontologic Museum but is nowadays dedicated to temporary exhibitions, ranging from art to archaeology and ethnology. The building was recently restored and they recovered the deteriorated wall paintings that depict scenes of everyday life in 16th century Valencia. The Almudín was declared a national historical and artistic monument shortly before its restoration. The square onto which this building opens is also one of the most attractive in the city and another good reason to visit. Admission: free

If alternative and independent music is your thing, then Barracabar, in the Cánovas area, is the place where you belong. There's always a good scene to be found and, of course, good music. Plus, they have concerts on every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday after midnight. Not to be missed. Just to give you an idea of the type of music you'll hear, here are a few examples: Beck, Blur, Adorable, James, The Posies, Oasis, Mathew Sweet, Suede, Morphine, Radiohead, Big Soul, Manic Street Preacher, The Chemical Brothers, Edwyn Collins, Luna, Brad, Placebo, and many more. Prices are a bit higher than in other places, but the music (live or otherwise) is worth it.

Filmoteca

Films Dedicated to Directors, Stars...
Plaza del Ayuntamiento, 17
Valencia 46002
Spain
+34 96 351 2336
The Filmoteca is temporarily closed for renovations. Screenings are now being held in the Salon de Actos de IVAM Calle Guillem de Castro 118, and the Institut Français, Moro Ziet 6. The Filmoteca is one of the oldest cinemas in Valencia. It's subsidised by the government of Valencia. This cinema bases its programme of films on already released films. These are usually included in seasons that correspond to an actor, a director, a theme, a cinematic tendency or a different school. These can be either foreign or Spanish productions. It's worth noting that it is one of the few cinemas that screen short films. It is, at the same time, one of the most active cinemas during the annual Muestra de Cine del Mediterranni (Mediterranean Film Festival).

A unique gallery
Calle Del Palau 10
Valencia 46003
Spain

The Palau gallery is located in the old district of Valencia, very near San Juan del Hospital Church. It is a very interesting place to simply look around, as well as to buy contemporary works of art. It gained notoriety in the 70s and 80s for exhibiting the work by the Equipo Crónica. The gallery now works with contemporary artists, such as Fuencisla Francia, among others. One of its principal assets is its owner for her understanding, taste and integrity, as well as the quality of the art on offer.

Beer & Live Jazz Concerts
Abadía de San Martín, 10
Valencia 46002
Spain
+34 96 352 9671
The Madrid is a great place to have a quiet beer with your friends and listen to live jazz or poetry readings. The atmosphere is both pleasent and calm. This space is divided into open booths in a circle with a wooden table in the middle, providing a bit of privacy, while the walls are decorated with old posters. The speciality of this bar is definitely the "Agua de Valencia" and the variety of their beers. The age group of clientele ranges between 20 and 30 year olds.

Huge club & great concerts
San Vicente, 200
Valencia 46007
Spain
+34 96 380 3852
The Roxy Club has changed its name to Mirror. Despite the name change, this venue continues to be one of the best night clubs in Valencia. Mirror organizes a wide range of activities to liven up your nights. They are famous for their disco nights, "Single Sessions", from Friday to Saturday, but this is also THE venue for live concerts by well-known national and international groups. On disco nights, they bring in a very mixed clientele, while the DJ plays the best of contemporary dance music. When concerts are on, doors open at 11pm (check for ticket prices). Mirror, as you can tell, it is not called the "Illusions Factory" for nothing.

Sala Moratín

Experimental theater and cinema
Plaza del Ayuntamiento, 17
Edificio Rialto
Valencia 46002
Spain
+34 96 353 9300
This small hall located right in the center of Valencia, in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, belongs to a chain of theaters owned by the Valencian government. It is situated in the same building as the Sala Rialto. Because of its small size, its possibilities are limited, therefore it specializes in avant-garde productions. It is used mostly by Valencian theater groups who put on experimental performances with unique staging arrangements, although on occasion you'll find vanguard groups from other places. It also serves as a cinema where they show new or never-seen cultural films. The entrance fee and schedule change according to the production.

Irish pub with live music
Gran Vía Marqués del Turia, 69
Valencia 46005
Spain
+34 96 351 3642
This Irish pub pretty much looks like all the others out there, but it is a nice place to come to have a drink with friends. But drinking is not your only option here. On Saturday nights they have live concerts, and you can even take in a Premiere League match if you want to. Drinks range from standard beers such as Guinness, to a good variety of Scottish whiskies. They also make a really good Irish coffee.

Teatro Rialto

Cinema converted into a theater
Plaza del Ayuntamiento, 17
Edificio Rialto
Valencia 46002
Spain
+34 96 353 9300
In the 80s, a lot of old theatres were converted into multi-plexes. Here, however, the opposite occurred. This well known cinema was transformed into a theater by the Valencian government. It's in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and is now the headquarters of the Dramatic Center of the Valencian government. Today, it is one of the several theater spaces run by the local government, and it puts on reasonably high quality shows and performances by companies from the Valencian province and other national and international groups. The entrance fee and schedule vary acording to the show.

The Hemisphere

High-tech cinema and planetarium
Avenida Instituto Obrero de Valencia, s/n
Valencia 46013
Spain
+34 96 335 5330
http://www.cac.es
This architectural marvel designed by Santiago Calatrava was conceived as a very special cinema and planetarium. Here the spectator can in the same space experience the sensations of a conventional planetarium while enjoying the images offered in IMAX format. Its astronomic projection system is controlled by computers in order to produce a complete representation of the sky and the planets on a surface that is 24 meters in diameter and at a 30-degree angle. The clear, sharp images projected, along with the size of the screen and the quality of the sound, achieve an exceptional realism that will transport the audience into the next galaxy.

Ánimas

Victorian decor & live music
Pizarro, 31
Valencia 46004
Spain
+34 96 351 7578
One of this bar's main attractions is without a doubt its decor. It's made out to look like the set of a horror film with the action taking place in the 19th century. The thick red curtains hanging from the walls, mirrors all over the place, candelabras and much more all add to this effect. The other appeal here is the live music. From Sunday to Tuesday, it's a piano bar, and on Wednesday night's they have live jazz sessions. The rest of the week (Thursday to Saturday), it's a good place to come for a drink and dance to the music if you can make room for yourself.
