The high quality of life of the people in Valencia can be explained, in part, by the weather: the almost daily sunshine, the breeze from the Mediterranean Sea and the temperate climate are important factors to bear in mind. To these three basic ingredients you must also add the huge variety of cultural activities available, the excellent food and drink, the scenic beauty of its countryside, the elegance of the city and the enthusiasm for life of its people.

Festivals

That the people of Valencia know how to enjoy themselves is confirmed in March every year during the celebrations in honour of Saint Joseph. The streets are illuminated with the magnificence of the Fallas, works of art made from wood and cardboard and standing more than ten metres tall that dominate almost every square in the city and that are burnt on the eve of 19th March. The "falleras" and "falleros" dress up luxuriously in traditional Valencian costumes and add more colour and beauty to the streets of this city. In honour of Saint George, who according to legend helped the Christians defeat the Moors, the people of Valencia have the Moros y Cristianos (Moor and Christian) parades. They take to the streets dressed in clothing representative of both cultures and with a great deal of realism and enthusiasm re-enact the battles between the two armies. Although Saint George's day is on the 23rd of April, various towns of the Community of Valencia hold these parades throughout the spring and summer months. The celebrations held in Alcoi and Ontinyent are particularly spectacular. In summer, you can also participate in the Feria de Julio festival, during which you can witness the Battle of the Flowers and important bullfights.

Music

If you have a passion for music then you should visit the Palau de la Música, whose programme includes all type of music, from jazz to classical music and opera. The Roxy Club (for rock) and the Black Note Club (for jazz) are two other venues that have gained a reputation for great live music. Another option is to take in a show during the International Band Competition which takes place every year.

Movies & Theatre

The many cinemas and theatres offer a wide variety of films and plays as well. The Filmoteca shows classic films and series, the ABC Park cinema shows the very latest Hollywood blockbusters, while in September the Mostra Valencia - Cinema del Mediterrani film festival gives out prestigious prizes for short and feature films, including national and international movies. And in terms of theatre, you can take in a show at the Teatro Principal, or Espai Moma for more vanguard theatre.

Bars

If you enjoy going out at night, Valencia is a city that never sleeps. There are all types of bars, clubs and pubs to choose from: Irish pubs such as the The Black Sheep, Brazilian bars like Capoeira, or for a more authentic Spanish experience try Carmen Sui Generis. An area full of bars can be found around Plaza Xuquer which is frequented by students, whilst the trendy head for the Avenida de Aragon. If you want to dance throughout the night, then there are always lots of discos to choose from in town (Sala Quatre or Caballito de Mar on the beach) or outside town, such as the famous clubs that have survived the crash of the legendary Ruta del Bakalao ('Techno Route' when in the late 80s and early 90s there were a series of bars and discos stretching from Madrid to Valencia that people covered in a weekend), such as Chocolate, Puzzle and Spook Factory.

Other Activities

The Community of Valencia offers many other possibilities to enjoy your free time. If you are interested in art there is IVAM for modern art and the Museo de Bellas Artes for more traditional art. Perhaps you prefer to spend your time in the open air in contact with nature, in which case we recommend you go for a walk along the Paseo Marítimo to admire the beauty of the Mediterranean on Malvarrosa beach or visit the Albufera Natural Park and lake by boat. You can also discover the Valencian countryside by horse, balloon, bicycle, canoe... the possibilities for having a good time are endless.

Black Note Club

Live music every night
Polo y Peyrolon, 15
Valencia 46021
Spain
+34 96 393 3663
Valencia's only live music venue that offers concerts nearly every day of the week. You'll hear mainly jazz, although bossa nova, blues, soul and even Latin groups turn up to play from time to time as well. It's a great place to hang out with friends and have a drink. If there's no live music on, you'll find the background music (soul, R&B, jazz or reggae) is more than a good enough substitute.

Cultural events twice a week
Caballeros, 38
Valencia 46001

The old town's most luxurious and stylish venue puts on a varied programme of cultural events every Tuesday and Wednesday at 11pm. You can come for poetry recitals, theatre shows or movies. The interior decor spread over three floors is an attractive mix of the old and the new, with the remains of an 11th-century fortified wall sharing space with the most advanced technology in audiovisual and lighting equipment. As for the music, it's house, funk and hits from the 1980s played for a clientele of well-to-do folk in their 30s who like the cocktails as well.

Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música

Summer international band festival
Palau de la Música
Paseo de la Alameda, 30
Valencia 46023
Spain
+34 96 337 5020
Scheduled as part of the festivities in the Feria de Julio, specifically the first two weeks in July, this international town band competition has become increasingly popular. It dates back to 1886 and is held in either the Bullring or the Palau de La Música. Bands are more than just tradition in the autonomous community of Valencia; they are an integral part of life. Every single festival or "fiesta" will include marching bands or concerts of one sort or another, and every town, big or small, will have at least one municipal band. In some towns, such as Llíria just a few kilometers from Valencia, the prestige of their bands is internationally known. This international contest is a treat for music lovers and a challenge for the musicians of Valencia.

Chocolate

A legendary club
Carretera de Sueca, s/n
Las Palmeras
Valencia 46419

+34 96 177 2011
Open since 1980, it is the best representative disco of the popular Ruta del bakalao (a series of techno dance clubs stretching from Madrid to Valencia). They open during national holidays, when they organize special theme nights. The party here is both in the parking lot and in the building itself, so you'll have to pay for a separate ticket if you want to leave and come in again. There is a large dance floor and the DJ, Jose Conca, does nothing but add more flames to this wild party. Check their website for upcoming events and concerts.

Fallas

Most important festival in Valencia
A traves de la ciudad
Valencia, Valencia
Spain
http://www.fallas.com/
Las Fallas, Valencia's world-renowned festival, is the city's most important social event. More than 350 monuments made out of cardboard, wood and other materials take to the streets. Designed by artisans to satirize situations or well-known figures (ninots), they are set up on 15 March (the plantà) and are the centre of attention until the 19th when they are set fire (the cremà), turning a year's work into ash and rubble. All of this is accompanied by mascletàs, with thousands of kilos of firecrackers and fireworks being set off, open air concerts and the traditional offering of flowers to Madrededéu dels Desamparats, Valencia's (female) patron saint. These are just some of the events which make this entire week of festivities commemorating Saint Joseph so famous.

Filmoteca

Films Dedicated to Directors, Stars...
Plaza del Ayuntamiento, 17
Valencia 46002
Spain
+34 96 351 2336
The Filmoteca is temporarily closed for renovations. Screenings are now being held in the Salon de Actos de IVAM Calle Guillem de Castro 118, and the Institut Français, Moro Ziet 6. The Filmoteca is one of the oldest cinemas in Valencia. It's subsidised by the government of Valencia. This cinema bases its programme of films on already released films. These are usually included in seasons that correspond to an actor, a director, a theme, a cinematic tendency or a different school. These can be either foreign or Spanish productions. It's worth noting that it is one of the few cinemas that screen short films. It is, at the same time, one of the most active cinemas during the annual Muestra de Cine del Mediterranni (Mediterranean Film Festival).

Beautiful spot south of Valencia
Carretera del Palmar
Valencia 46012
Spain

http://www.civila.com/albufera
L´Albufera natural park is located 12km south of the city. It is a beautiful spot where there are periodically a large number of migratory birds to be seen. It is a salt-water lake with a 6km diameter at its widest. It is separated from the Mediterranean by the Dehesa, a strip of land covered in pine-trees and with warm water beaches. The experts recommend a boat trip during sunset when the fading light gives the landscape some spectacular colours and hues. Around the lake there are some small fishing villages such as El Palmar, a picturesque place well-known for the quality of its restaurants. It's also a good place from which to visit the lake by boat. Buses leave from the central bus station in Valencia (Menéndez Pidal Avenue)

Music Palace

Vanguard Architecture
Paseo de la Alameda, 30
Valencia 46023
Spain
+34 96 337 5020
http://www.palauvalencia.com
The Palacio de la Musica is situated in the old river bed of the Turia. It was constructed in 1987 and is one of the banner buildings of modern Valencia, within what's known as the vanguard architecture movement in the city. One of its most distinguising features is the glass enclosure that looks out on the gardens in the Turia. From here you can watch the fountains that have been designed to spout to the beat of the music heard from the Palau throughout the garden. The building was built specifically to promote culture and that's exactly what it has done. Concerts, operas, ballets, musicals, conferences, presentations, and all sorts of other educational activities have been and continue to be held inside and outside the building.

Puzzle

Avant-garde dance club
Carretera del Perelló, s/n
El Perelló
Valencia 46420
Spain
+34 96 177 1935
http://www.discotecapuzzle.com/
This is an avant-garde club where the worlds of fashion and design come together, something which you'll notice right away when looking at the odd outfits some people wear. It is part of what's left of the "Ruta de Bakalao" (a series of techno discos stretching from Madrid to Valencia), and it is made up of two floors and a VIP zone. Young people go early, and when they open the second dance floor at 6am, an older clientele arrives. The two rooms are of different sizes and have different ambiances, music, and clientele, but they both have performances and shows, not only go-go´s. Despite being very early in the morning, the people in the room that opens later seem to party more and harder, dancing to all the latest sounds. If you get hungry dancing, cafeteria Sunday is located at the entrance.

Spook Factory

Legendary disco on the outskirts
Carrera del Riu, 399
Pinedo
Valencia 46012
Spain
Spook Factory is one of the most popular discos in or around Valencia, bringing in between 4500 and 5000 people every Friday night. The generally young crowd all come for one thing: the music. It's been open more than 11 years and has been dubbed the "Vanguard Temple" because it is constantly updating and incorporating new music into its repertoire; some even say it's the best disco in Spain for Techno music. Join the crowd and come on over (by car or taxi), but be prepared for the great and loud music (20,000 W). It's one of the few great remaining discos from the famous late 80s and early 90s phenomenom known as the "Ruta del bakalao" ('techno route', with a series of discos and bars from Madrid to Valencia), and is definitely worth checking out. Spook Factory only opens on Friday nights but doesn't close until midday on Saturday, making it one of the most important "after-hours" clubs in Valencia as well. Transport: Car or taxi are recommended.
