Luxury restaurant-café
Avenida de Aragón, 40
Valencia 46021
Spain
+34 96 361 9365
You'll find this restaurant and café on Aragón Avenue, in the most modern area of Valencia, also known as "the new centre of town". The first impressive feature you see is its large open air terrace with an excellent and refined ambiance. Just behind it and inside is the deluxe restaurant, divided into two floors, with mirrors, white doors, marble stairs and generally very classic decor. It generally attracts the local business people and the well-to-do. Its high quality menu is very complete and varied, the fresh fish standing out among the rest. They also have a very exclusive wine list with good Spanish wines primarily. This restaurant is definitely worth visiting for lunch or dinner, but also to kill the time when the kitchen is closed and it turns into a wonderful café in a luxurious setting.

Bar Amorós

Local bar with good food
En Llop, 3
Valencia 46002
Spain
+34 96 351 7057
This bar was founded in 1932 and bit by bit has gained a good reputation and regular clientele. The decoration and the atmosphere are that of a typical neighborhood bar, nothing fancy and few frills. The clients who come to this bar are generally businessmen and workers who work close by. This bar is known for its cold meat and Spanish tortilla (potato omelette) sandwiches, while it has a good assortment of "tapas", such as grilled kidney and breaded and fried cuttlefish.

Bar Pilar

Fresh Mussels as a Tapa
Moro Zeit, 13
Valencia 46001
Spain
+34 96 391 0497
A long-established traditional tapas bar that has been serving tasty snacks and drinks in the heart of the old town since 1918. Try the famous freshly-steamed mussels, the broad beans cooked with mint or the potato salad. These are best accompanied by a house wine or Valencian vermouth. Popularly and affectionately known as La Pilarica, it fills up quickly during the weekends and you can't book in advance. The decor is old-fashioned and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

Aromas from a traditional kitchen

This magnificent old 17th-century palace has been converted into an excellent restaurant that specializes in both traditional and modern Valencian cuisine. Gracious dining is in a sumptuous dining room decorated in centuries old style. The best things on the menu are the homemade desserts such as mango mousse which is cottage cheese served with fruits of the forest jelly and the chocolate orange bomb.

Bestias

Fun & daring meals
Avenida Manuel Soto Ingeniero, 14
Valencia 46024
Spain
This restaurant, whose name could roughly be translated as "The Brutes", is just a stone's throw from the port. They are specialists in birthday and bachelor/ette parties. The emphasis here, without doubt, is on having a good time, all in a carefree, young ambience, decorated in deliberately tacky style - don't be surprised if you see bedpans, toilet paper rolls and similar objetcs on the tables!. As the owners say, they specialise in "anti-depression treatments", providing "smiles without VAT". On the menu, you'll find interesting international fare, where shapes are especially important. From hamburguers to more elaborate dishes, the forms are particularly evocative. The desserts are equally creative and the cakes, erotic. Reservations are recommended, particularly at the weekend.

This is a modern sandwich shop with an informal style and ambiance. It is a fast-food type place. They attract all kinds of customers looking for a good, fast and cheap sandwich. You will find a very large selection of sandwiches to choose from, hot or cold. Some of their more popular sandwiches are the cured ham and brie, vegetarian (not suited for vegans since they usually contain ham) and any of the different cold meat varieties. Without a doubt, however, the best things about Bocatta are the relatively good quality at cheap prices and quick service.

Interesting tapas for dinner

Valencia 46001

There's a fabulous selection of delicious tapas available here to snack or dine on and the chef never stops producing new creations, many of them influenced by Basque cuisine. Try the meatballs in tomato sauce, marinated leeks or clams cooked in spicy pil-pil sauce. It's located next to Plaza Negrito and it has fast become a popular venue that attracts an informal and friendly clientèle. The warm and welcoming interior has a rustic feel and is decorated with flamenco and bullfighting paraphernalia. There's a good selection of Spanish wines to choose from.

Bruselas

Central restaurant with a varied menu & breakfast
San Vicente Mártir, 35
Valencia 46001
Spain
+34 96 394 1035
A very European name for this central coffee shop and restaurant located close to the train station and the bullring. Its specialities include sandwiches, tapas and combo platters, but for those who want something a bit sturdier, they also offer an à la carte menu and a special set menu at the weekends. The decor is classic and has paid careful attention to the details. Prices are quite reasonable in spite of its central location. It's a good place for a break or to start your tour of Valencia. It gets quite busy at midday and weekends, so you'd better book in advance.

Cafetería Express

Coffee shop plus meals
Avenida de Aragón, 18
Valencia 46021

+34 96 360 1442
This small cafe's large sunny open air terrace spreads along Avenida Aragon. Its clientele, mostly well-off, sunbathe and have fun while drinking a delicious cafe del tiempo, the Valencian version of iced coffee. Inside, the decor is sober and modern, with black tables wisely placed to get the most out of the space available. They have daily set menus which vary depending on the day of the week, and are always a good option. On the weekends the menus are substituted by combo platters, and the generally well-to-do crowd, by the young and not so young, who have chosen this busy cafeteria as their meeting point on a night out.

Situated facing the Mediterranean sea on Alboraya beach and with the soft breeze, could there be any place better than this to dine on typically Valencian cuisine of delicious seafood and fish? And not only fish and seafood of the best quality, but also meat and all that is part of the well-known Mediterranean diet are the specialties of this great restaurant. The wine list is standard to good, with mainly Spanish wines. It's open all year round, and they organize barbecues on weekend nights starting in March. Chacalay

Traditional bar with good cocktails and tapas
Salvá, 1
Valencia 46002
Spain
+34 96 352 1010
This bar was in vogue in the 50s and 60s, and it still has that same, almost "rancid" ambiance, especially with its English-esque decor. The clientèle is generally fairly mixed, although an older crowd tends to be the norm. A recommended dish is rice with Swiss chard, and as for tapas, bacalao con alioli (codfish with garlic mayonnaise). If you're thirsty, try the house wine or, especially, one of their cocktails.

Here you'll feel as if you were in Mexico, while actually in one of the best areas of Valencia, only ten minutes walking distance from the centre. This is due to the decor, faithfully reproducing the Mexican aesthetic of bright colours, and its menu, based on traditional Mexican food. On the drinks menu, you'll find equally typical drinks such as tequila, margaritas and other cocktails. The atmosphere is cheerful, relaxed and cool; the clientele is varied, ranging from professionals to students. Everyone coming in can be sure to have a good time with good food.

Damy

Spanish restaurant, lots of tapas
Gascó Oliag, 8
Valencia 46010
Spain
If you know something about Spain, you have probably heard about tapas, a typical way to eat that is both healthy and fun. Damy offers you a huge selection of them; particularly outstanding are the ham and seafood tapas. This restaurant/bar is a fantastic place to chill out and have a good time in one of the best areas of Valencia. It's a warm and lively sort of place, very popular with a youngish crowd (maybe because it's open so late). It is a good option to enjoy a good meal and have a nice time.

If you want to try a good horchata (a cold drink made from tiger nuts and the most traditional drink in Valencia), this is the best place to go. Daniel has managed to stand out due to the excellent quality of its horchata, made with traditional methods. The staff are friendly and the place itself is large and comfy, so it's one of the most visited places both by locals and foreigners searching for something authentic. Dolce Vita

Classic French-Italian restaurant
Císcar, 34
Valencia 46005
Spain
+34 96 334 1528
Admiring the pictures, reminiscent of the 1930s, and the art deco style of this restaurant, it is easy to feel transported to the Italy of the "Dolce Vita", but also to decadent Paris at the turn of the XX century. They offer the best specialities of both countries: delicious duck magrais from France and great Italian carpaccios. It's virually impossible not to find something appealing on the menu, and if you consider its location, in Cánovas, possibly the best area in the city, this restaurant is hard to beat.

It's divided into two different parts: at the entrance, it's a tapas bar, where you can choose from a wide variety of beers and order some of the tapas they serve, such as fried baby squid, cuttlefish, Spanish omelette, Spanish spicy chorizo sausage and more. The decor is rustic in style, with huge beer barrels as tables. In addition to the variety of food, there is a good mix of music, ranging from flamenco to African beats, jazz and reggae, too. At the back, there is a traditional restaurant serving Spanish dishes. They have an excellent wine list, as well, among which the Via Aurelia stands out.

You cannot leave Valencia without first trying an horchata, a typical drink made from the chufla plant. The original is from Alboraya, a town within the region of Valencia. If you can't make it there, don't worry as the horchaterías throughout the city, such as this one, are good sources for this refreshing and unique drink. Rin is not just an horchatería, but also an ice-cream parlour and café. It has two branches in Valencia and another in Alboraya. They make their own drinks and ice-cream. You can also try some of their fresh pastries; the traditional fartón is another must and the perfect accompaniment to the horchata. Horchatería Rin also has its own convenient car-park for patrons.

El Palmar, which was an island in L'Albufera natural reserve until the lagoon was partially dried in the mid-Forties, is a must for those looking for the most beautiful scenery south of Valencia. You can also enjoy local cuisine here: all i pebre de anguilas (baby eels with garlic and pepper) and espardenyà. The scenic route runs between Dehesa Forest and the lake, crossing fields and palisades covered with rosebays. The fishing community, the annual lottery for fishing privileges (redolín), and the pilgrimage to Cristo de la Salut (Christ of Good Health) celebrated in the lluent (center of the lake), are traditions that live on, as if taken straight from one of Sorolla's costumbrista paintings.

This is the case of Rincon Griego (Greek Corner), a good restaurant which offers the best in Greek food, such as musaka or iman marino, a speciality consisting of stuffed aubergine (eggplant). You can choose, as well, between two set menus. However, the set menu does not include dessert, so be sure to order one of their delicious home-made pastries. On top of all the great food waiting for you to discover, it's a nice, comfortable place, decorated according to Greek tradition.

Río Grande

All the best Tex-Mex
Blasco Ibáñez, 110
Valencia 46021
Spain
+34 96 360 2563
This large and modern Tex-mex restaurant offers the best of the cooking from the far west. It is an American franchise decorated with Native American photos and objects, a bit like in the old movies. To eat there is a huge variety of food, including ribs (half or full plate), quesadillas, chicken wings, hamburgers, pizza and pasta. For dessert, the brownies and the choco-cheesecake, along with other typically American desserts, are recommended. You have to go with an appetite because the portions are enormous. There is good beer imported from Mexico such as "Pacifico" and "Modelo", and, of course, they play country music.

This cosy and casual restaurant will take you a little bit closer to the island of Mallorca with its colorful and seafaring decor, as well as its food. Here you can savor a wide variety of salads and "pa amb oli" (slices of country bread smeared with tomato and olive oil), along with smoked meats, pork sausage and Mallorcan cheese. Typical Irish pub
Avenida de Aragón, 8
Valencia 46021
Spain
+34 96 337 4012
For lovers of other cultures or for those who simply wish to try out something different, this typical Irish Tavern is the perfect choice. The decoration pays careful attention to details and the atmosphere is perfect: Once inside, nothing would make you think that you are in the well-known Aragon venue. Wood galore, antiques on the shelves and pictures, everything will make you think you're in Ireland. Even Mark, the friendly and handsome Irish waiter, with his accent, serving Guinness, Kilkenny or one of the best Scottish whiskeys will make you think that you have left Valencia behind for a couple of hours at least. The clientele is principally made up of professionals and students during the weekends, all of them attracted by the pints or whiskeys. From time to time, they also organise live music shows and they serve up some pub food, as well.

Santa Bárbara

Restaurant near universitary
Blasco Ibáñez, 29
Valencia 46010
Spain
You'll find this fantastic restaurant in the most modern area of the city and just opposite the main university. It is very-well known by professionals and students alike, plus it has the added benefit of an open air terrace for dining outdoors when weather permits. On the menu, it serves a great variety of all kind of dishes, but features excellent Valencian cuisine: Giant prawns with ham, home made broth, various rice dishes, fresh fish...and to round off your meal, try one of the restaurant's delicious and exclusive desserts. From the wine menu, a good white wine is recommended. Prices will depend on the dish, without ever being too high, and both the quality and atmosphere have never disappointed anybody. If you come, you will see why it is so popular.

This restaurant specializes in Pakistani food. Although it is a little far from the center of town, the delicacies that this spacious and elegant restaurant serves make it worth the trip. There are mild and spicy dishes, rice, lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes. Their bread and samosas (pastries stuffed with vegetables) are very tasty. Their wine list is not exceptionally large, but their tea is excellent.

Large, good atmosphere and decoration
Plaza Cánovas, 3
Valencia 46005
Spain
+34 96 351 3433
This fantastic and spacious American restaurant has chosen Plaza de Cánovas, one of the most exclusive areas in Valencia, to set up shop. It's decorated with wooden tables and an unmistakable American feeling. In the short time it's been open, it has become very popular with the locals. Be sure to try some of the best American dishes, from hamburguers to carrot cake and, of course, BBQ ribs, the house speciality. You can read the menu at the door, but it goes without saying that it is worth entering. You'll have a good time in its lively atmosphere, eating typical American fare while listening to good ole country music.
