This center is named in honor of renowned artist Jack Shadbolt and his wife, writer Doris. It opened in November 1995 as a performance and teaching center for the visual arts, theater and dance. In order to better accommodate the more than 8,000 arts enthusiasts who take part in its programs, classes and workshops, it added multi-use studios and a second theater. Designed by internationally renowned Hotson Bakker Architects, its design and layout, with large, windowed studios, an atrium and raised terrace, complements its natural surroundings. Carved by well-known Northwest Coast artists, the Sty-Wet-Tan is a grand decorative hall of 3,600 square foot, perfect for receptions, performances, workshops, conferences, seminars, feasts and banquets. It can hold up to 400 people in a stand-up reception, and the rentals start at CAD900 for four hours. Its award-winning architecture features four houseposts and two supporting roof beams, a spring dance floor, a stage area, adjoining a fully equipped kitchen.
