Vancouver offers everything from bars and pubs to fine arts, cinema, literary readings, theatre and many spectator sports. The arts and entertainment weekly the Georgia Straight, and the Thursday and Friday editions of the Vancouver Sun and Province provide extensive listings of the city's events and venues.

Bars and Pubs

If you're looking for a fun night out, there are a number of places for spirited fun. neighbourhood pubs, bars and hotel lounges are common in every region of the city. Among the favourite hangouts are Fred's Uptown Tavern, DV8, the Irish Heather Bistro, Steamworks, Yaletown Brewing Company, Fox and Firkin English Pub, and the Railway Club. For upscale imbibing, there's the critics' choice Bacchus Piano Lounge, the Pan Pacific Hotel Lounge, 900 West Lounge and Diva at the Met. A newer highlight is Bar None.

Sports bars offer a different experience. Ice-cold pint in hand, you can watch cable-televised sports games on a big-screen TVs. Some of the most popular sports watering holes are the Shark Club Bar & Grill and Mavericks Sports Grill on the Waterfront, featuring B.C.'s biggest outdoor patio.

Dance Clubs

The light fantastic is usually on and shining brightly in Vancouver, especially on weekends. The Chameleon Urban Lounge, Sonar, BaBalu, and Richard's on Richards let you dance the night away (well, at least until 2am). Other places to trip, skip and hop are the Palladium Club, Sonar and Stone Temple Cabaret.

Gay and Lesbian Clubs

Vancouver has a large gay community, and particularly in the West End, there are many establishments to dance and dish with members of the same sex. Celebrities is the city's biggest gay bar, complete with DJs, go-go dancers, and dancing. Nearby are Numbers and Denman Station Cabarets. The wildest of them all, however, may be the Odyssey, with go-go boys, shower-room viewing, unisex washrooms and theme nights.

Music

Bryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang, Bif Naked, 54-40 and Diana Krall. These are just some of the big-name artists who began their music careers here. They have made it so big that you rarely see them perform locally anymore. When they do, you will find them at large venues like B.C. Place, General Motors Place, the Vogue, Orpheum Theatre or Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Vancouver's music scene is diverse. The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia and the Orpheum Theatre, home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, are great venues for classical music performances. For jazz, blues and fusion, the best bets are the Cellar Restaurant & Jazz Club, Rossini's, the Roxy, Blue Note Jazz Bistro, Starfish Room and the Yale.

For punk, indie and other aural alternatives, smaller venues like the newly re-opened Commodore Ballroom, the Railway Club, Picadilly Pub, the Sugar Refinery and Palladium are probably your best bets to catch local and international talent in intimate settings. For electronica, house and slyly spinning DJs, Sonar, the Sugar Refinery and Nevermind are some of the places to go.

Cinemas

Several first-run movie theatres are within a few blocks of each other downtown. Across the bridge, the newer Fifth Avenue Cinemas show popular art and alternative films to grateful West Side crowds. For independent, art, foreign and experimental films, check out the diverse listings at the Blinding Light!!, the Ridge, and the Pacific Cinematheque.

Vancouver also has two large-screen theatres: the Alcan Omnimax Theatre at Science World and the CN IMAX at Canada Place.

Mega-screen movie theatres have been popping up over the last few years, and there are more than a few in and around the city, like Cinemark Tinseltown.

Theatres

From classic Broadway hits to innovative productions, rich and varied theatrical activity has always been a part of the city's entertainment scene. The 2,929-seat Queen Elizabeth Theatre is the city's largest. It's perfect for seeing touring musicals, international opera and modern dance. Next door to the QE is the more intimate Vancouver Playhouse, a 668-seat auditorium that stages plays, concerts, chamber music and modern dance.

Other theatre and concert venues include the Arts Club Theatre, the refurbished Stanley Theatre, Orpheum, Firehall Arts Centre, Presentation House Gallery and the Vancouver East Cultural Centre.

Comedy Clubs

For seriously funny stuff, try Yuk Yuk's. It has theatre-style seating, a full-dinner menu and stand-up comics from the city and around the world. The Arts Club Theatre on Granville Island is another venue for interactive fun. It's home to the Theatre Sports "improv" group.

Professional Sports

Vancouver offers a medley of sports events. From September to May, the NHL's Vancouver Canucks plays the coolest game on earth in General Motors Place.

June kicks off the pre-season games of the Canadian Football League. You can catch the B.C. Lions in action from July to late October at B.C. Place.

Festivals

Some acclaimed international festivals that provide year-round fun and entertainment include the Vancouver International Film Festival, Vancouver Fringe Festival, Vancouver International Children's Festival, International Jazz Festival, Comedy Festival, Folk Music Festival, and New Music Festival. They occur all over the city and offer locals and visitors a chance to mingle.

Both showcase top-rated local musicals, comedies and new and classical drama. The Granville Island location also features the Backstage Lounge, a bar to hang out in after the show, or just to go and listen to live music. It's a favourite local destination.

This is downtown's gigantic, pillowy stadium. Its claim to fame is that it is the world's largest air-supported dome. It opened in 1983 and was constructed with enough concrete to build a sidewalk from this city to Tacoma, Washington. From July to November, it plays host to the Canadian Football League's BC Lions. It also holds concerts and trade and consumer shows like the Pacific International Auto Show and the BC Home and Garden Show. The stadium also holds the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Musuem.

This downtown Irish pub has all the fixings to make you feel as if you've transported yourself back across the Atlantic. Along with the classic pub facade, the all-wooden bar, and the dark lighting, this pub has also combined some American feel to it with regular Football and Baseball matches being shown as well as serving a wide variety of American cuisine that you'd only expect from a bar.

The Wedgewood Hotel's popular piano lounge is perennially voted the best bar in the city by critics. Named after the epicurean god of wine, it nearly begs you to imbibe in luxurious style. It has a large by-the-glass wine list and fine Italian cuisine. Drinks and nibblies will cost about CAD30. The decor is dark antique and flower-filled elegance, with soft lighting and a gently tinkling piano. The dance floor opens up from Thursday to Saturday and make sure you dress appropriately;casual attire is frowned upon.

This establishment is part of the city's fluid club scene. Located in Yaletown, it is an oasis for chic, fashion-forward Vancouverites. If you get a bit squeamish on amusement park rides, this mega-theatre at Canada Place probably won't be your favorite place to visit. The experience will give you the sensation of being right in the middle of the action that takes place onscreen. On many postcards of the city, you will find images of this "five-sailed" complex adorning the harbour shoreline. This should be high on the list of things to see for first timers to the city. The centre, located downtown, was Canada's Pavilion at the 1986 World Expo and is currently the home of the World Trade Centre and Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. It also houses the CN IMAX Theatre, a five-story movie screen. Just walking around the structure gives you panoramic views of the city.

Downtown

Vancouver
Canada
Vancouver has vitality and style. Nowhere is this more evident than in the downtown core. Its first distinct feature is Stanley Park, located on the west end of Georgia Street. This 1000-acre park includes an 11 kilometre Seawall promenade, old-growth forests, hiking trails, and the Vancouver Aquarium. Downtown is the city's largest shopping district. One of its main arteries is Robson Street, a highlight for both locals and visitors. It's brimming with fashion boutiques, coffee bars and trendy cafes. Crossing Robson is Granville, a street that offers independent fashion stores and entertainment venues. Shops like John Fluevog Shoes and True Value Vintage are here, as well as the city's "Theatre Row," where concert, theatre and movie choices can be found.

This welcoming Gastown bistro is as close as you will get to Dublin in Vancouver. Specializing in whiskey and beer, it has been raved about since opening in 1998. Sit down to a small meal of Baked Hazelnut Crusted Goat Cheese (CAD7), or go for the bigger and more classic Bangers and Mash (CAD14). Dinners range from CAD13 to CAD18. Even James Joyce's favourite sandwich is on the menu. Enjoy live music that will keep your eyes smiling, whether they are Irish or not. Oddly enough the lunch menu becomes available again each night from 10PM-midnight.

This theatre was built in 1927 and restored in 1976 to its former glory. Originally opened as a vaudeville house, it is now a beautiful, much-loved city landmark. Located in the entertainment district downtown, it has plush velvet seats and carpets with graceful brass accents throughout. It is the perfect venue for a glamorous night out on the town. It shows a variety of concerts, musicals and ceremonies and is home to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

The gallery portion houses one of the largest photographic and artistic media collections in the west. Both national and international artists display their work here, but the focus is on Canadian talent.

In addition to the gallery, the North Vancouver Museum and Archives holds the key to the North Shore's photographic history. The Presentation House Theatre plays host to a variety of dramatic performances year round.

The Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo and k.d. lang got their big breaks here. For decades, this small, second-floor downtown club has been home to famous performers playing everything from folk and country to jazz and rockabilly. The front room is the most intimate, while the corner room, separated by a long bar, has a more relaxed air. From the lunch menu, try the Quesadillas with chicken breast (CAD6.95) or black bean, onion and bell pepper (CAD5.95). Burgers (CAD5.95-6.95), sandwiches (CAD5.50-6.95), and a Mediterranean Wrap (CAD6.95) are also popular.

Thursdays offer live musical entertainment from local and international artists. The DJs on "Plush Fridays" play urban tracks, while "Epic Saturdays" let you dance to new music and old favourites. The casual Kitsilano and Gastown locations of this restaurant/bar offer live jazz every night. Local pianist Linton Garner plays every Tuesday to Saturday. Rotating acts appear, as well as regular featured performers at the 162 Water Street location.

It is dotted with pictures of jazz legends and finished off with a grand piano on the stage. Find a large selection of Italian appetizers, salads, soups, breads and antipasti. Items like the Black Sambucca Prawns ($9.95CDN) are popular and pastas like the baked Canneloni Pescatora ($10.95CDN) are tempting.

This is off-the-wall, improvised live theatre. A talented bunch of actors throws scripts and rehearsals out the window and takes audience suggestions and other inspirations as their cues, resulting in fast-paced sketch comedy. Teams compete for the most points and a referee and audience judges score each scene. The troupe in Vancouver pioneered this funny form of performance and many comedians and actors got their start with the league. At Theatre Sports you can always expect loads of raucous entertainment. Things like Improv Extreme, the Imprentice, and Classic TheatreSports are just the tip of the iceberg, guaranteeing you a Titanic boat load of belly laugh entertainment, so you can literally laugh yourself sick. Admission (Wed-Thu): CAD14.50 adults; CAD11.00 students; CAD9.50 for 9:15pm show; Admission (Fri & Sat): CAD16.50 adults; CAD13.00 students. See website for showtimes.
