Chic spot |
900 West Georgia Street Fairmont Hotel Vancouver Vancouver, BC V6C 2W6 Canada +1 604 684 3131 http://www.fairmont.com |
One of Vancouver's most chic rooms is found in the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. After a multimillion-dollar renovation, this elegant spot was reconstructed into a lounge and wine bar. The interior has glowing chandeliers and plush chairs, and the feel is one of a luxury ocean liner's dining room. The clientele is well-heeled and refined. The menu features signature dishes as well as West Coast and Asian fare. Examples include grilled veal medallions and prawns, and halibut marinated in miso and sake. There is a large selection of wines by the glass. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Two venues, one great experience |
1585 Johnston St (Granville Island Theatre) Vancouver, BC V6H 3R9 Canada +1 604 687 5315 http://www.artsclub.com/ |
This theatrical institution has two locations to choose from: One is a 450-seat venue converted from an industrial warehouse on Granville Island, and the other is the Stanley Theatre, a restored 1920s movie house on South Granville. Both showcase top-rated local musicals, comedies and new and classical drama. The Granville Island location also features the Backstage Lounge, a bar to hang out in after the show, or just to go and listen to live music. It's a favourite local destination. 777 Pacific Boulevard Vancouver, BC V6B 4Y8 Canada +1 604 669 2300 http://www.bcplacestadium.com/ |
This is downtown's gigantic, pillowy stadium. Its claim to fame is that it is the world's largest air-supported dome. It opened in 1983 and was constructed with enough concrete to build a sidewalk from this city to Tacoma, Washington. From July to November, it plays host to the Canadian Football League's BC Lions. It also holds concerts and trade and consumer shows like the Pacific International Auto Show and the BC Home and Garden Show. The stadium also holds the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Musuem. Cuban-style downtown party spot |
654 Nelson St (near Granville) Vancouver, BC V6Z 1L5 Canada +1 604 605 4343 |
This downtown Irish pub has all the fixings to make you feel as if you've transported yourself back across the Atlantic. Along with the classic pub facade, the all-wooden bar, and the dark lighting, this pub has also combined some American feel to it with regular Football and Baseball matches being shown as well as serving a wide variety of American cuisine that you'd only expect from a bar. The Wedgewood Hotel's popular piano lounge is perennially voted the best bar in the city by critics. Named after the epicurean god of wine, it nearly begs you to imbibe in luxurious style. It has a large by-the-glass wine list and fine Italian cuisine. Drinks and nibblies will cost about CAD30. The decor is dark antique and flower-filled elegance, with soft lighting and a gently tinkling piano. This establishment is part of the city's fluid club scene. Located in Yaletown, it is an oasis for chic, fashion-forward Vancouverites. And you can tell by the fusion décor, cigar humidor and martini bar that this is the hangout of the city's young, urban professionals: it is sleek, ultra hip and funky. Nightly entertainment ranges from live bands to DJs. There is a dress code in effect, so avoid wearing sneakers or denim. Considered one of the places to be, get there early to avoid waiting in line. If you get a bit squeamish on amusement park rides, this mega-theatre at Canada Place probably won't be your favorite place to visit. The experience will give you the sensation of being right in the middle of the action that takes place onscreen. The theatre has a giant screen, surround sound, and stacked seating so that every seat in the house has a good view. On many postcards of the city, you will find images of this "five-sailed" complex adorning the harbour shoreline. This should be high on the list of things to see for first timers to the city. The centre, located downtown, was Canada's Pavilion at the 1986 World Expo and is currently the home of the World Trade Centre and Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. It also houses the CN IMAX Theatre, a five-story movie screen. Just walking around the structure gives you panoramic views of the city. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Off the beaten path |
1155 Granville St (Near Andersen) Vancouver, BC V6Z 1M1 Canada +1 604 331 1184 http://www.sugarrefinery.com |
Hidden along an unassuming section of downtown's Granville Street, this café-bar offers a relaxing escape. Elevated above street level, a narrow staircase leads you to a cozy, hip room with twisted light fixtures, walls painted bright crimson, yellow and powder blue; and large, cushioned couches. This eclectic place is a popular venue for listening to spinning DJs, live music and spoken word. An enormous bowl of made-from-scratch soup can be had for less than CAD5. The after-hours establishment also serves alcoholic beverages until 2am. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Improvised live theatre |
1601 Johnston St (New Revue Stage) Vancouver, BC V6H 3R9 Canada +1 604 687 1644 http://www.vtsl.com/ |
This is off-the-wall, improvised live theatre. A talented bunch of actors throws scripts and rehearsals out the window and takes audience suggestions and other inspirations as their cues, resulting in fast-paced sketch comedy. Teams compete for the most points and a referee and audience judges score each scene. The troupe in Vancouver pioneered this funny form of performance and many comedians and actors got their start with the league. At Theatre Sports you can always expect loads of raucous entertainment. Things like Improv Extreme, the Imprentice, and Classic TheatreSports are just the tip of the iceberg, guaranteeing you a Titanic boat load of belly laugh entertainment, so you can literally laugh yourself sick. Admission (Wed-Thu): CAD14.50 adults; CAD11.00 students; CAD9.50 for 9:15pm show; Admission (Fri & Sat): CAD16.50 adults; CAD13.00 students. See website for showtimes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Vancouver Canucks began to play in the National Hockey League in 1970. Since then, they have played an entertaining and tough brand of hockey. The team has played for the Stanley Cup twice so far. They play from October through May, and if their talent and fortunes on the ice are good, right through June as well. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Music, dance and more |
Hamilton St @ Dunsmuir St Vancouver, BC V6B 2P1 Canada +1 604 873 3311 http://www.vancouverplayhouse.... |
Located beside the grand old Queen Elizabeth Theatre, this is its quieter, more demure partner. Built in 1962 by the city, the medium-sized downtown facility features music recitals, chamber music concerts, contemporary dance, plays and business events. It seats 668 people and though less formal and elegant than the Queen Elizabeth, it is still a comfortable and attractive venue. Be sure to check the listings to see what's showing.
