Whether diners crave glamorous, elegant, warm or unadorned, Vancouver offers thousands of choices for memorable cuisine. Many of the city's establishments are internationally renowned and combine superb cuisine with extraordinary atmosphere.

Food-loving urbanites flock to bistros, dining rooms and cafes that range from home-style grub in perpetually busy diners to gourmet masterpieces in refined restaurants. Visitors can savor exotic Malaysian fare at lunch and Russian by nightfall, or choose from dozens of other ethnic cuisines. There are so many good restaurants in this city that it is difficult to narrow any list down to a few, but here are some noteworthy highlights.

Downtown

Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House is a local favourite and a great place to go for beer and fresh smoked oysters. Other downtown highlights include Chartwell Restaurant, Diva at the Met, Le Gavroche, CinCin Ristorante and Piccolo Mondo.

West End

This beachside neighbourhood is known as one of the largest gay and lesbian communities in the country. The dining selection here is superb: busy Stepho's Souvlaki Greek Taverna has traditional Hellenic treats and the award-winning Raincity Grill, has elegant decor that is upstaged only by its West Coast flavours. Another award-winner, Sami's, has its second location here (the other is in Kitsilano), serving up Indian-inspired original creations. The popular Cafe de Paris celebrates Gallic cuisine here, too.

Yaletown

Yaletown is a good place to start your exploration of the city's culinary creativity. Many of the city's hottest eateries brighten this film and fashion centre. The Italian romance of Villa del Lupo and La Terrazza will soften even the most Scrooge-like of connoisseurs. If you prefer your meals more laid-back and inexpensive, Subeez and the Yaletown Brewing Co. are trendy hangouts with good food, eager-to-be-seen crowds, and in some cases, pouty and aloof wait-staff. The Southern-style barbecue creations at Dix BBQ & Brewery are also popular.

Gastown

This charming historic area has an eclectic selection of eateries. For hot and spicy dishes to warm up with on cool days, the Jewel of India Restaurant will satisfy. For a relaxed atmosphere and interesting experience, try the internationally-known Blunt Bros. Cafe. The Irish Heather is a relative newcomer to the area, and packs them in almost every night.

Chinatown

From Dim Sum to fine dining, Vancouver's Chinatown offers Asian delicacies and treats. Some of the most popular venues include the busy and noisy Pink Pearl Seafood Restaurant and the Floata Seafood Restaurant, for authentic Hong Kong-style creations hot and fresh from the wok. Hon's Wun-Tun House is a good choice as well.

Granville Island

This once-industrial island was transformed in the 1970s into what it is today: a city oasis with a famous public market, heavenly bakeries and cafes and fresh-food restaurants. Seafood lovers will revel in Bridges' three-level restaurant, wine bar and bistro. Other choices include the Creek Restaurant and the Arts Club Backstage Lounge.

Kitsilano

This casual and health-conscious neighbourhood has some of the top restaurants in town. Weekend line-ups shouldn't daunt you from trying out the kitschy, faux-greasy spoon humour of Sophie's Cosmic Cafe, whose breakfasts are rumoured to be the best in town. The Naam is a landmark, open 24 hours and offering a selection of organic and vegan health food. Top of the heap is Lumiere, with its fine French cuisine infused with a West Coast sensibility and the freshest of ingredients. Other critic's darlings: Sami's Indo-American Bistro's fresh and creative Indian-style; Pastis' French cuisine taken to new heights; and the raved-about Vij's Indian fusion creations. For young and casual hangouts, try the bar-like atmosphere of Nevermind.

Point Grey

This somewhat sleepy and upscale section of the city offers many dining choices.. Try the Celtic hospitality of Dentry's Irish Grill for a good time and meal. If you want something more intimate, the Brock House Restaurant provides an elegant setting for special dinners, and Cafe Madeleine has live music, readings and artwork. True Confections is the place to go afterwards for rich desserts.

East Vancouver

There is plenty to sample all over vibrant East Vancouver, from Main Street's Little India to Victoria Drive's Portuguese neighbourhood to Commercial Drive's Little Italy. Try the savory Indian fare at Nirvana and All India Sweets, both on Main Street. Farther east on Commercial Drive, there is so much to choose from that it may take a week of dining just to get an idea of its offerings. Places like Federico's Ristorante & Supper Club offer traditional Italian meals, while newer places like the Cuba-inspired Havana and the literary Bukowski's offer hip alternatives with live entertainment. Fet's has a 1950s diner feel, while Cafe Deux Soleils serves creative vegetarian meals. Further west on Main Street, young and artistic hangouts like the Locus and the Grind & Gallery Coffee Bar are changing the shape of city dining.

South Vancouver

Restaurants are fewer and farther between in this suburban uptown area, but there are gems worth the quick drive from downtown. The elegant Seasons Hill Top Bistro in Queen Elizabeth Park offers fine dining.

This lounge is a popular place for a creative crowd. Nightly shows make the watering hole a prime locale to enjoy live musical and comedy acts. The menu is predominantly West Coast-style cuisine: spicy chicken wings or large platters of nachos with dip are popular orders at less than CAD10. With the large variety of liquor lining the bar's back wall, it is obvious that drinks are this institution's specialty. Locally brewed ales are constantly in demand and worth a taste. There is something to suit everyone on the extensive and varied menu, but they are most famous for their crab. Appealing dishes range from mild to hot to spicy with plenty of seafood, meat, chicken and vegetarian options. Entrees like Asian chicken curry and certain shellfish dishes should be tried. This part of the city is called Little Amsterdam, and Blunt Bros. is one reason why. Patrons range from 20-something college kids to beatniks of all ages. They come for the food and the relaxed atmosphere. The cafe, located right beside Gastown, is decorated like an uptown rec room, complete with pool tables, sofas, tables with backgammon boards and suspended speakers. The food is perfect for satisfying the munchies. Specialties include the Stoner's Salad and wraps known as "blunts" (the "Jamaican Blunt" has jerk chicken, rice, potatoes and sweet corn). Writer, poet and notorious booze-lover Charles Bukowski provides the inspiration for this establishment's name and atmosphere. Divided into two levels, its upper floor contains plush velour sofas and large potted plants, while its lower holds a fully-stocked bar and bookshelf-lined walls. There are table-top literary quotes and black and white photographs of famous writers. Hot Water Music is a shrimp, scallop and salmon dish served with Udon noodles (CAD10). The elaborate wine and drink list is posted on a chalkboard—the martinis, such as the Faulkner, are popular orders.

An understated establishment, this 20-year-old West End cafe is a long time favourite of sophisticated diners. Simple wood furniture in a room painted in soft warm brown tones creates a casual and relaxed ambience. The Paris-style cafe celebrates Gallic tradition. The poulet roti aux herbes (CAD 16.50), a half chicken slowly roasted with fresh herbs in a peppercorn sauce, is a tasty example. The cuisine is dominated by local seasonal ingredients, and a decadent dessert trolley and local and imported wines list complete the meal.

This popular Italian restaurant is a favourite among both locals and tourists, and you may even spot a visiting celebrity or two trying out one of the joints famous pizzas. Located above Robson Street, the chic establishment has an open kitchen with a wood burning oven and grill as the centerpiece. Start out with a sampling of appetizers: a platter of smoked trout, Gaeta olives, prosciutto, grilled baby octopus and eggplant caviar (CAD17.50 per person). Critics consider the fresh pasta here to die for, but anything that comes out of the oven (think pizza) or of the grill (rare ahi, veal, ostrich) will be the highlight reel of any dining experience.

Sit down to a small meal of Baked Hazelnut Crusted Goat Cheese (CAD7), or go for the bigger and more classic Bangers and Mash (CAD14). Dinners range from CAD13 to CAD18. Even James Joyce's favourite sandwich is on the menu. Enjoy live music that will keep your eyes smiling, whether they are Irish or not. Oddly enough the lunch menu becomes available again each night from 10PM-midnight.

One hundred years ago, a large bartender named Joe Fortes became the first lifeguard at Vancouver's English Bay. Now this attractive seafood and chop house that bears his name is one of downtown's top dining spots. Oysters are the specialty (the fresh shucked and pan-roasted varieties) at the upscale haunt. The dozen or so fresh fish entrees are also popular, with cedar-plank salmon topping the daily list. The wine list is award-winning. Dinner for two costs CAD50-75. Reservations are recommended.

Located minutes south of downtown, Kitsilano is known for its active population, beaches and mountain views. The community has a profusion of eateries, bookstores, theatres, bars, open-air grocers and boutiques. Here, you'll find gems like the Naam, Sophie's Cosmic Cafe, Kidsbooks and the Hollywood Theatre. Kitsilano

Former hippie haven
West Broadway to Cornwall Avenue
Vancouver, BC
Canada
+1 604 734 2738 (Community Center)
Kitsilano is an interesting shopping area and neighbourhood that was a major haven for hippies in the 1960s. Today, retail stores peddling kitchenware, clothing, home furnishing, books, and sporting goods have usurped the former bohemian character. Traces can still be found, however, in some of the eclectic shops and vegetarian restaurants such as Môtiv, Kaya Kaya, Sophie's Cosmic Cafe and the Naam. Some of Vancouver's top restaurants, like Bishop's and Lumiere can be found here also.

Visiting this cafe is similar to having central floor seating at a concert. As the one of the social hubs of the artistic Main Street community, it is the perfect perch for public voyeurism or temporary seclusion. The dark and cavernous single-room eatery has large wooden chapel-like booths in the rear and twisted iron fixtures at the front. Although it is renowned for its Calamari, there are many other items on the eclectic menu worth a taste, including the Roasted Half Chicken in a citrus-sambuca semiglaze sprinkled with cumin and coriander.

If a vegetarian could spend eternity in Utopia, they would probably live here. Opened in 1967, this homey place in Kitsilano features live music, a private patio, and an extensive, healthy menu. Fulfill your veggie fantasies with items like Popeye Pita Pizza, with spinach, onions, feta and mushrooms. Sample ethnic specialties or old standards like veggie and tofu burgers. It has been voted one of the top places in the city to get 'indifferent and surly service', but it is still packed every night.

It is a perfect area for calm browsing and hassle-free shopping. Specialty shops run the gamut from decorator stores (Pleasantries, the Cloth Shop, and Splish Splash Bath Boutiques) and fashion boutiques, to hardware (Hewer Home Hardware) and grocers.
