Blunt Bros Cafe

Amsterdam-Style Atmosphere
301 West Hastings St
(near Cambie)
Vancouver, BC V6B 1H6
Canada
+1 604 682 6788
http://www.bluntbros.com/
This part of the city is called Little Amsterdam, and Blunt Bros. is one reason why. Patrons range from 20-something college kids to beatniks of all ages. They come for the food and the relaxed atmosphere. The cafe, located right beside Gastown, is decorated like an uptown rec room, complete with pool tables, sofas, tables with backgammon boards and suspended speakers. The food is perfect for satisfying the munchies. Specialties include the Stoner's Salad and wraps known as "blunts" (the "Jamaican Blunt" has jerk chicken, rice, potatoes and sweet corn). Local amateur musicians entertain the crowd at Open Mic Night every Thursday.

Every menu item at this downtown bistro has a distinct maple flavour. The gift shop exclusively sells products made from pure organic maple, like vintage syrups, vinaigrettes and onion marmalades. Try the mushroom and wild rice soup and one of the sandwich selections, which include vegetarian (eggplant, zucchini, red pepper and maple-glazed sweet potatoes). The maple curry chicken salad is a favourite. Complete your meal with maple wine and gourmet dessert.

Gresham's BBQ and Bakery

New York deli-style sandwiches
901 Granville Street
Vancouver, BC V6Z 1L3
Canada
+1 604 681 1556
You only have to go as far as Granville Street to savour a New York deli-style sandwich. This bakery-cum-rotisserie-cum-coffee bar has brought the taste of the Big Apple to Lotus Land. Bricks on the walls and metal chandeliers and seating add an industrial touch to the dining room, which is divided into food and beverage stations. Have the Louisiana Pulled Chicken Sandwich or the Barbecued Baby Back Ribs. Complete the picture with Seafood Chowder or Thai Noodle and Shrimp Salad, Gresham's Lager, and for dessert, a Tiger Brownie.

Funky 1960s-style diner
1202 Davie Street
Vancouver, BC V6E 1N3
Canada
+1 604 687 1293

This lively diner is a top West End hangout. 60s memorabilia covers the walls and typical American diner-style chrome tables and chairs fill the room. The atmosphere is lively and festive, and you should expect line-ups on weekends. The menu offers everything from burgers to burritos, all in generous portions. You can't visit without having one of its legendary milkshakes, but for something stronger, Daiquiris and margaritas are also available.

House of Foccacia

A myriad of flatbreads
102-500 West Broadway
Vancouver, BC V5Z 1E9
Canada
+1 604 876 8433
This cafe has two varieties of pita, eight types of foccacia, four kinds of panini and four hot tortilla-wrapped sandwiches. The décor is more European bistro than regular deli - small, round tables and wrought-iron chairs. There's a window counter where you can watch the street hustle and bustle. There are daily menu specials, each with fresh soup of the day or salad. The bread and fillings vary as well. There's a grilled foccacia and tortilla for both meat and veggie lovers. The panini is served with cetto or chicken. Cash only.

For breakfast, coffee and bagels
2559 Cambie Street
Vancouver, BC V5Z 3Y6

Because of its proximity to city hall, public employees often hang around this café-cum-deli. Patrons may even catch the city's mayor snacking on a bagel and coffee. It serves breakfast all day, including the Ham 'n' Eggwich, French toast, pancakes, Eggs Benedict, bagels and the standard coffee and toast. Sandwiches are included in the lunch specials along with chicken, corned or roast beef, turkey and tuna salad. All are served with soup or salad. An espresso from the cappuccino bar makes a good finish to a light meal. Payment is in cash only.

Molly's Coffee Shop

Classic diner
1832 Columbia Street
Vancouver, BC V5Y 3C6
Canada
+1 604 874 5122
Family-owned and operated for 30 years, this modest cafe offers the classic diner experience. It's tiny, cramped, and packed with television and film types from surrounding downtown studios. This is a classic, loud and cramped diner. Plates bang, the tables and chairs are small, and it is nearly always packed. Breakfasts, homemade soups, Shepherd's Pie, Chinese food, sandwiches, burgers, classic greasy fries, and desserts are all within even the smallest of budgets. Reservations are not accepted, and you can expect to wait in line during peak hours. Cash only.

Salt Tasting Room

Unconventional eatery
45 Blood Alley
Vancouver, BC V6B 1C7
Canada
+1 604 633 1912
http://www.salttastingroom.com/
One of the most popular eateries in Vancouver, the décor of Salt Tasting Room welcomes you with local European furniture. However, the restaurant does not have a conventional kitchen. Instead the place serves a wide variety of cheese, cured meats and condiments. Unlike traditional restaurants, patrons here assemble their plates with goodies listed on a chalk board. The menu changes daily; you can choose from a wide array of meat, exclusive cheese sandwiches, home-made soups, salads, wines and dessert.

Sophie's Cosmic Cafe

Hip and eclectic diner
2095 West 4th Ave
Vancouver, BC V6J 1N3
Canada
+1 604 732 6810
http://www.sophiescosmiccafe.com
Every inch of canary yellow wall space in this cafe is covered with vintage toys, souvenirs, photos and mementos. Arrive early if you plan on enjoying breakfast—it is rumoured to be the best in the city—as line-ups usually snake down the street by 9am. A bottle of their own hot sauce (CAD5) goes on everything (even eggs)! Other menu choices include a spicy Falafel Burger, and the tender Teriyaki Chicken served with rice and steamed veggies is delicious. The hip, laid-back clientele enjoys lunches that average around CAD7, and dinners at CAD9.
