Chic spot
900 West Georgia Street
Fairmont Hotel Vancouver
Vancouver, BC V6C 2W6
Canada
+1 604 684 3131
http://www.fairmont.com
One of Vancouver's most chic rooms is found in the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. After a multimillion-dollar renovation, this elegant spot was reconstructed into a lounge and wine bar. The interior has glowing chandeliers and plush chairs, and the feel is one of a luxury ocean liner's dining room. The clientele is well-heeled and refined. The menu features signature dishes as well as West Coast and Asian fare. Examples include grilled veal medallions and prawns, and halibut marinated in miso and sake. There is a large selection of wines by the glass.

Burnaby Keg

Juicy steaks and fish
2656 Eastbrook Parkway
Vancouver, BC V5C 5W2
Canada
+1 604 294 4626
http://www.kegsteakhouse.com/
This suburban eatery has everything one would expect in the steak section. Holed up in a secluded area, the ambience is warm and welcoming, with an efficient staff on hand. Settle down and begin with the Scallops & Bacon (bacon-wrapped scallops in a Martini cocktail sauce). The well-done Sirloin steaks, accompanied by the house salad or a juicy sprig of asparagus are a pleasure to bite into, but for something different, try the Classic dinners. A plethora of traditional steaks, including Filet Mignon and some rare combinations feature on the menu. Ribs and chicken dishes are available too, as are sumptuous fish medallions. A kids' menu makes this all the more a family place, so bring the gang along!

Barbecue champ David Valjacic creates genuine lip-smacking Southern-style eats. The main décor feature is a brew kettle at the bar. The place is large, with tile-inlaid wood floors and massive sliding garage doors, and the crowd is casual. For side dishes, beer-battered fries and creamed corn are recommended. Combination plates are available for two.

One of Vancouver's most extravagant places to dine, this New York inspired steakhouse is one of the best places to be noticed in if you're a single young professional. The high ceilinged, three-storey restaurant has etched its place in the power-dining and matchmaking scenes. The menu is dominated by gourmet meat dishes served à la carte: the roasted prime rib of beef is a popular entree, and the double-cut lamb chops are a favourite. Appetizers range from a selection of fresh oysters to fried calamari with hot cherry peppers and Cajun mayo.

New York deli-style sandwiches
901 Granville Street
Vancouver, BC V6Z 1L3
Canada
+1 604 681 1556
You only have to go as far as Granville Street to savour a New York deli-style sandwich. This bakery-cum-rotisserie-cum-coffee bar has brought the taste of the Big Apple to Lotus Land. Bricks on the walls and metal chandeliers and seating add an industrial touch to the dining room, which is divided into food and beverage stations. Have the Louisiana Pulled Chicken Sandwich or the Barbecued Baby Back Ribs. Complete the picture with Seafood Chowder or Thai Noodle and Shrimp Salad, Gresham's Lager, and for dessert, a Tiger Brownie.

This long-standing favourite is Vancouver's top steakhouse. The selection of beef at this downtown establishment is impressive, from the filet mignon (11 ounces) to the Cayenne Rubbed Rib Steak. The menu is huge, and the décor is West Coast steakhouse all the way: large, comfortable leather chairs, dark wood everywhere, and white linen on every table. Reservations are highly recommended.
