Aki

Real Japanese cuisine
745 Thurlow Street
Vancouver, BC V6E 3V5
Canada
+1 604 682 4032
The city's most famous food critic, James Barber, said this small Japanese restaurant is the closest you can get to back street Tokyo in Vancouver. It has a sushi and robata bar and tanks of live shrimp and geoduck. The crowd ranges from solo locals to large groups of wide-eyed tourists. Try the Fish and Chicken poached in Sake, Teriyaki Chicken Wings roasted on bamboo shoots, and steaming bowls of Udon and Donburi. It has a large sushi menu.

Cipriano's Ristorante & Pizzeria

First to introduce pizza here
3995 Main Street
Vancouver, BC V5V 3P3
Canada
+1 604 879 0020
The traditional recipes used in creating Cipriano's pizzas date back to 1953, when the owner's father, Guiseppe Cipriano, introduced the large, flat and round crust to Vancouver. This hidden, understated gem captures the romantic look and feel of an old country ristorante: stucco walls, chequered tablecloths and hanging Tiffany lamps. A satiating meal is composed of the Caesar alla Christina salad, Francesco's Fredo Pasta and an Italian red or white from the wine list. Other non-pasta entrées include the Veal Calabrese, Chicken Roma and Ribs Mediterranean. Don't be deceived by the restaurant's shabby look.

Ellada Taverna

Worth checking out in Kitsilano
3617 West Broadway
Vancouver, BC V6R 2B8
Canada
+1 604 738 1113
"This Greek eatery that opened is yet another restaurant in Kitsilano that is well worth checking out. It is the one with the can't-miss-it red signboard with gold type above the terrace. A vintage floor-model radio serves as the reception desk. Inside, candlelight romantically brightens the dark-wood-veneered dining room. Chandeliers add style to the place, while a sit-down bar keeps it easygoing. House specialties include lamb (Paithakia Riganata), seafood (Salmon Riganato Skaras) and pizza (pesto and zucchini with artichokes and pine nuts). For dessert, there is the Bougatsa: Lemon custard in phyllo pastry."

Fulfill your veggie fantasies with items like Popeye Pita Pizza, with spinach, onions, feta and mushrooms. Sample ethnic specialties or old standards like veggie and tofu burgers. The earthy decor and soft Indian music here is the perfect atmosphere in which to sit and sample. For years, Planet Veg has been rated among the top vegetarian and cheap eats by city magazines and newspapers. Flavourful vegan cuisine and good prices make it popular. The Basmati Pot combines rice with beans, peas, corn, carrots and spices. It is topped with Tamarind Chutney and Chickpea Subji (a zesty tomato, onion and chickpea sauce).

Tomahawk

70-year-old family place
1550 Philip Avenue
Vancouver, BC V7P 2V8
Canada
+1 604 988 2612
http://www.tomahawkrestaurant....
The décor is composed of an array of native artifacts and artwork; there are portraits of First Nations nobility, baskets, carvings, and settlers' tools; and most of all, the portions are huge. The Yukon breakfast, for example, has five slices of back bacon, two eggs, hash browns, and toast. Many of the burgers are named after First Nations chiefs, such as Chief Capilano (onion, lettuce, wiener, egg, cheese, tomato, Tomahawk special sauce and dill pickle), and the Chief Raven (Tomahawk special sauce and dill pickle).

Wild Garlic

Celebrate the stinking rose
2120 West Broadway
Vancouver, BC V6K 2C8
Canada
+1 604 730 0880

The highlight here is the large menu of tapas-style dishes infused with garlic in sweet, pungent and creamy concoctions. Contemporary art hangs on creamy yellow walls and dark wood chairs encircle white-linen covered tables. Begin with the signature Roasted Garlic and Chicken Dijon Soup, then try the Black Sesame Sea Bass and Garlic Mashed Yam with Soya Chili Oil. The diverse tapas-style menu is perfect for sharing: roasted candied garlic or stuffed green olives with garlic and asiago cheese.
