Late 1800s parksite |
1416-40 Haro Street Vancouver, BC V6G 1G2 Canada +1 604 665 3331 http://vancouver.ca/nmi_wac/nm... |
The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation created this historical park to preserve the nine heritage houses that date back from the late 1890s. The Barclay side of the West End park has kept its original neighbourhood character and scale, thanks to Barclay Manor. The Roedde House Museum and the Weeks House are found on either side. The former is Vancouver's first house museum while the latter is occupied by 'Friends For Life' - an organization that provides assistance for persons with life-threatening illnesses. Many celebrities have been seen at the Absolute Spa at the Century Plaza Hotel & Spa, so it's obviously good at what it does. Rated the number one day spa in the city, it has 8,000 square feet of luxurious pampering space. Italian marble, murals and other touches make the surroundings as relaxing as the services. Treat yourself to a massage (an hour) or a dip in the ozonated pool, meditate in the eucalyptus steam rooms (Fatigue Fighter treatment) or a deluxe makeover (45 minutes). Review © 2007, Wcities |

It also holds concerts and trade and consumer shows like the Pacific International Auto Show and the BC Home and Garden Show. The stadium also holds the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Musuem. On many postcards of the city, you will find images of this "five-sailed" complex adorning the harbour shoreline. This should be high on the list of things to see for first timers to the city. The centre, located downtown, was Canada's Pavilion at the 1986 World Expo and is currently the home of the World Trade Centre and Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. It also houses the CN IMAX Theatre, a five-story movie screen. Just walking around the structure gives you panoramic views of the city. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Greystone Gothic-style church |
1825 West 16th Avenue Vancouver, BC V6J 2M3 Canada +1 604 731 3101 http://www.canadianmemorial.org/ |
When Chaplain George Fallis arrived in Vancouver shortly after World War I, he had dreams of erecting a memorial to Canadians who fought in the war. With that in mind, he solicited funds from all over the country. In 1928, his dream was fulfilled with the church opening its doors in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (Memorial Day). The greystone gothic-style church's main attraction is its masterfully crafted stained-glass windows. Each window portrays a biblical scene coupled with a provincial coat of arms and illustrations of historical events underneath. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This modern college campus on Granville Island is named after the 19th century's Emily Carr, one of Canada's most famous artists. Stop by while you're on the island shopping or enjoying the parks. Over 75 years old, this cutting edge visual arts school offers galleries, a cafe and shops. There are often events, guest speakers, exhibitions and student art sales to check out. The buildings' construction alone; clean lines of glass, concrete and burnished steel; worth taking in. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The city's original jail |
12 Water St Vancouver, BC V6B 1A5 Canada |
This small two-cell courtyard built in the mid-1800s and burned down in the Great Fire of 1886, used to serve as the city's first jail. It is a Gastown landmark that consists mainly of a commemorative sign and some bars in the cobblestone alley way that used to hold the frontier town's unruly citizens, but it's a must-visit for the turn-of-the-century tales it carries. The small square with its antique light fixtures and explanatory plaques now features studios, offices, and a charming pub called the Irish Heather. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This part of downtown got its name from saloon owner 'Gassy Jack' Deighton, who was a rather chatty fellow. Cobblestone streets and original architecture, shops, restaurants and bars fill the area. Popular Historic Walking Tours are given free every day from mid-June to the end of August. Highlights include The Landing, Hill's Native Art, Deluxe Junk Co., Salmagundi West, Sonar, and the Irish Heather Bistro. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The world's first steam clock |
Corner of Cambie and Water Streets Vancouver, BC V6B 1B9 Canada |
On a street corner of this Victorian-era warehouse district stands the world's first steam clock, and probably the city's most photographed attraction. The timepiece plays the Westminster Chimes every hour and whistles every 15 minutes with a gush of steam. Despite its gothic style, it's not as old as it looks. Famed inventor and horologist Ray Saunders built the clock in 1977 to muffle steam from underground lines that were used to heat local buildings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

1940s old ballast-stone house |
680 17th St Vancouver, BC V7V 3T2 Canada +1 604 925 7295 |
This museum recounts the varied history of West Vancouver. It is located in a ballast-stone house built in 1940 by Gertrude Lawson, daughter of businessman John Lawson, known as the Father of West Vancouver. When Lawson visited Scotland, she so admired the regal mansions and castles that she saw there that she had her home built in the style of those majestic Scottish estates. The stones used in the construction are believed to have originated from New Zealand as ballast on timber trading vessels. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gothic revival church |
646 Richards Street Vancouver, BC V6B 3A3 Canada +1 604 682 6774 http://hrc.rcav.org/ |
With its asymmetrical towers, downtown's Holy Rosary Cathedral is a perfect example of Gothic Revival architecture. The pointed window and doorway arches, vaulted ceiling, exterior sandstone carving and tracery stained glass windows all reflect the Gothic character. Also notable is the full ring of the bells. All eight hang in the 66-metre east tower. This was the first church in Canada to ring a peal of Grandshire Triples to honour Dominion Day (now called Canada Day) in 1911. It lasted two hours and 59 minutes! Admission is free, though donations are accepted. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Former hippie haven |
West Broadway to Cornwall Avenue Vancouver, BC Canada +1 604 734 2738 (Community Center) |
Kitsilano is an interesting shopping area and neighbourhood that was a major haven for hippies in the 1960s. Today, retail stores peddling kitchenware, clothing, home furnishing, books, and sporting goods have usurped the former bohemian character. Traces can still be found, however, in some of the eclectic shops and vegetarian restaurants such as Môtiv, Kaya Kaya, Sophie's Cosmic Cafe and the Naam. Elegant Victorian manor |
1523 Davie Street (West End) Vancouver, BC V6G 3A2 Canada |
American sugar baron BT Rogers built this Victorian stone manor in 1900. Originally, it had 18 fireplaces with self-cleaning flues and an ice-cooled pantry. The wall panels are made from oak while the floors are laid with Fijian teak. Located in the West End, it has a stained-glass window with seashells and wildflowers adorning the framework that towers over the staircase from the main anteroom. The mansion also has a walk-in humidor and a wrought-iron fence made from the balconies of the old San Francisco city hall. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gastown landmark |

Whatever road you take when you explore historic Gastown (Carrall, Powell, Water or Alexander) it will lead you right to this plaza. Here, you'll find nightclubs, art galleries, antique shops, cafés, and jazz and rock music clubs. Hidden in its corner is one of Vancouver's earliest buildings, Gaoler's Mews, which housed the first city jail. There are also blooming courtyards with cryptic names like Blood Alley. City's first skyscraper |
355 Burrard Street Vancouver, BC V6C 2G8 Canada +1 604 683 8604 http://www.execu-suites.com/bu... |
This fabulous art deco building amid downtown's square steel uniformity is an ornate sight to behold. Designer JW Hobbs wanted to transpose the architectural grandeur of New York City to then-modest Vancouver, and he did so with terracotta, steel, brass, marble, intricate nautical details, gargoyles, murals and an impressive 40-foot archway entrance. The 25-story Marine Building was built in the late 1920s and now serves as an office building. It is set right at the harbour's edge, with the North Shore Mountains towering just beyond it. Historical park |
400 Powell Street Vancouver, BC V6A 1G6 Canada +1 604 873 7625 http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/ |
Once known as the Powell Street Grounds, this park was opened in 1902 by the second mayor of Vancouver, and was eventually given his name. In the 1930s, the park was the only place where political gatherings could be held, and was consequently the location for many Depression-era demonstrations. Today, it caters to Vancouver's downtown eastside, serving as a recreational and social centre for the community. Its facilities include softball grounds, a basketball court, children's playground, and community centre. Another highlight of the park is the Powell Street Festival, an annual mid-summer event celebrating Asian-Canadian culture. Review © 2007, Wcities |

World's Narrowest Building |
8 West Pender Street Vancouver, BC V6B 1R5 Canada |
The Guinness Book of World Records lists this landmark as the world's narrowest building. The edifice is a mere metre and half wide, while its upper floor has less than two metres in available space with bay windows. The structure is named after a group of Chinese traders. The city decided to widen the street to allow for increasing traffic, thus reducing the size of their land. Undaunted, the men pushed through with their plans and erected a building. Skincare products abound here, from toners to astringents and creams to sunscreens. The website and staff provide many useful beauty tips - a good reference for those unsure of what their skin needs. Possibly the city's least crowded beach, this is a great place to go to appreciate the sea's wonder in peace and quiet. This is a long stretch of clean, sandy and swimmable waterfront in Point Grey. It is family-friendly and home to summertime events like a sandcastle competition in late July, beach soccer competition mid August and the Jewish Worldbeat Festival in late August. There are concession stands, change rooms, showers and grassy areas. Skimmers alert: this is the perfect place for skim boarding once you learn the optimal tidal conditions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Massive urban park |
West end of Georgia Street Vancouver, BC V6G 3E2 Canada +1 604 257 8400 (Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation) http://www.city.vancouver.bc.c... |
Attractions abound in this massive downtown park, a veritable rainforest within a metropolis. To name just a few of the activities and attractions: the Children's Farmyard, Miniature Railway, tennis courts, beaches, children's water park, heated ocean side swimming pool, the Theatre Under the Stars, the Vancouver Aquarium and the 10.5-km perimeter Seawall, which is packed with joggers, walkers and rollerbladers. Once a military reserve, the park became one of the city's premier attractions by action of the city's first council. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Diverse cultural community |
Hastings Street to Great Northern Way Vancouver, BC V6A 3V8 Canada +1 604 713 1838 (Community Center) |
This is Vancouver's oldest working-class neighbourhood. The area's first settlement was established in the 1880s and has a diverse mix of ethnicity, history and architecture. The diversity is present today in the area's housing quarters, small corner stores, historic schools, parks and places of worship. One example is Hawkes Avenue, where stately Edwardian houses rub mortar with simple, working-class blocks. To discover more about the area, the Architectural Institute of BC offers free walking tours of the area. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Once a warehouse area, this is now the city's newest shopping, high-tech and film industry district. Turn-of-the-century buildings that now house high-end furniture, home design and designer clothing retailers characterize the neighbourhood, and it has become the favourite spot for film industry offices and shooting. Stick around and you might see a Hollywood star along the streets. Some of the city's best pubs and restaurants can also be found here. Great suds can be had at the Yaletown Brewing Co.. Try Villa del Lupo for fine dining. Review © 2007, Wcities |
