For those interested in the magnificent forests of British Columbia and how the resource is used and protected, this is the place to get the forest industry's perspective. Located in the "steel forest" of downtown, this visitor's centre includes 1,500 square feet of interactive displays, including models of harvesting operations, information on sustainability, and exhibits on wood as an environmentally friendly building material. This impressive community arts and recreation centre opened its doors in 1997 and is located in the eastside of downtown. Though its main aim is to provide community classes and social programs to the residential and commercial communities within the neighbourhood, the centre also serves the entire city. It offers a number of public, educational and entertaining activities, including exhibits, presentations, oral narratives, seminars and multimedia events with themes ranging from the environment to cultural differences. Multilingual representatives provide accommodation bookings, car rentals, maps, brochures and everything else needed to enjoy the city. Located in the Waterfront Centre (the Station) and managed by the Downtown Vancouver Improvements Association, this is the resource to seek out when you are new in town. Along with the information centre, the group has set up kiosks throughout the downtown area. The attendants work only in the downtown area and can be identified by their casual navy uniforms.
