Built in 1076, Ateneo di San Basso is one of the oldest churches in Venice. Restored after the fires of 1105 and 1661, the church has been privately owned, used as a marble and sculpture camp by the Fabbriceria di San Marco and finally reconstructed and furnished as a conference hall during the 1950s. The Venice Carnival is a two-week celebration of mysterious masked balls, parades, theatrical productions, music and general gaiety. In the costumed tradition of carnivals of the 18th century, the streets and various venues throughout the city are filled with activity. The many masked balls and galas held throughout the festivities are a perfect opportunity to donn the traditional hoods, capes and black masks, concealing one's identify and making carnival mischief all the more fun! In the old days, April 25th, St. Mark's Day in Venice,was celebrated by a popular procession in the Piazza in which not only religious, but also civil authorities would participate. Today, St. Mark's Day is still celebrated but in a different way. There is a procession in the Basilica and following a widespread tradition, Venetian men give their beloved a red rosebud, a 'boccolo'. Hence, this day is also called the Festa del Boccolo. Glassblowing holiday festival |

This happy week-long holiday festival celebrates the jolliest of Italy's patrons, Saint Nicholas, who also happens to be the patron saint of glassblowers. The glassworkers of Venice organize a water procession, the Regatta di Santa Nicholos, through the Grand Canal of the city. The first edition of Navalia – Venice's wooden boat show, held at the Venice Arsenale – was an extraordinary success and positioned itself straight at the top of wooden boat shows. This year's edition, from 9-12 May, is supposed to be even more promising: the exhibition area has been expanded, exhibitors can enjoy the pleasures of a well-serviced network and it features a series of impressive cultural events. There will be a number of international and national conferences on wooden vessels, and during the show, the national award for the best restoration will be announced.  A regatta open to everyone |

On the first Sunday after the Ascension, this regatta, which was first held in 1975 has become one of the town's biggest events, is open to everyone and all types of boats. It is held on Venice's main canals, the Canal Grande and the Canale di Cannaregio, and goes down San Marco early in the morning. Even if you do not participate in the water action, it is fun to watch and cheer on the competitors who come from all over the world.
