Partnered with the more serious annual Venice Marathon, this is a laid-back fun run for all ages and athletic abilities. Occurring the day before the marathon, the event is a non-competitive way for school-going children and their families to get ready for the big day. The course is simple and short, winding its way through the picturesque city. All the proceeds from registration in this event go towards local charities.

Every year in August, the Venetian Lido is the venue for an international triathlon, which attracts triathletes from all over world. The event includes a 1.5km swim, followed by a 40km track by bike to Malamocco and back, and as always it finishes with a 10km run. Participants — only members of national sports associations; should be very careful about their bicycle handles, since not adhering to the strict regulations may result in disqualification. A party including pasta, live music and even belly dancing accompanies the prize ceremony at night. Free to spectators.

You know you've always wanted to be a member of the Polar Bears Club, and here's your chance. This tradition has grown in popularity to the point where there are literally thousands of onlookers each New Year's Day morn. If the idea of cleansing the old and refreshing for the new in such a manner does not appeal, then join the amused audience and watch others suffer. There is a small throng of dedicated participants who dunk beneath the chilly waters at Lido beach. Free admission.

Regata di Burano

The Last Races of the Venetian Season
L'isola di Burano
Venice
Italy
This event is the rematch of the Historical Regatta that takes place early in September and concludes the Venetian rowing season. Take a vaporetto boat from Fondamente Nove in the Canareggio quarter to the serene island of Burano. Get here early and wander around the calli and campi filled with colourful houses before taking your place on the shore to watch the race. The proceedings start with the juniors flexing their muscles and are followed by a women's event. In the early evening, the gruelling and eagerly awaited double-oared puparini is not to be missed.

On the first Sunday after the Ascension, this regatta, which was first held in 1975 has become one of the town's biggest events, is open to everyone and all types of boats. It is held on Venice's main canals, the Canal Grande and the Canale di Cannaregio, and goes down San Marco early in the morning. Even if you do not participate in the water action, it is fun to watch and cheer on the competitors who come from all over the world. The race starts at St. Mark's Basin with more than 50 rowing teams participating.
