Begin Carnevale in the traditional way |
Piazza San Marco Gran Caffe Lavena Venice 30135 Italy +39 41 529 8711 (Tourist Information) |
Il Carnevale begins every year with a historically costumed parade in San Marco Square. The customary follow up to that is a toast in the hall of Gran Caffè Lavena to celebrate the new dawn of Carnival, a long held and cherished tradition. As revelers are already resplendent in silk and wool, it is only natural that this affair would also serve as an agenda making for the many fantastic events that stretch over the next week. Men as witches race canals |
Ponte di Rialto Venice, Venice 30100 Italy |
This celebration has a bit of folklore, a little bit of religious tradition and, quite frankly, some cross dressing, but all in good fun. The annual Regatta of Epiphany Witches usually takes place on the day of the Epiphany, January 6. All of Italy celebrates this 12th day of Christmas, but Venice is unique with its kitschy take on historic tradition. Witched-up men race their boats across Canal Grande until reaching the giant stocking hanging from Rialto Bridge. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Walk on and below the bridge |
Piazza San Marco Venice Italy |
This non-competitive track event takes people over Venice's bridges and through the city on a ten kilometre walk. The atmosphere is fun and people stop off in bars to refuel along the way. It is privately organised and costs a small sum to take part. Review © 2007, Wcities |
