One of the Oldest Churches in Venice |
Calle San Basso Venice Italy |
Built in 1076, Ateneo di San Basso is one of the oldest churches in Venice. Restored after the fires of 1105 and 1661, the church has been privately owned, used as a marble and sculpture camp by the Fabbriceria di San Marco and finally reconstructed and furnished as a conference hall during the 1950s. Also used as a classical music venue, visitors can enjoy the sounds of Vivaldi and Mozart in this historical landmark. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Begin Carnevale in the traditional way |
Piazza San Marco Gran Caffe Lavena Venice 30135 Italy +39 41 529 8711 (Tourist Information) |
Il Carnevale begins every year with a historically costumed parade in San Marco Square. The customary follow up to that is a toast in the hall of Gran Caffè Lavena to celebrate the new dawn of Carnival, a long held and cherished tradition. As revelers are already resplendent in silk and wool, it is only natural that this affair would also serve as an agenda making for the many fantastic events that stretch over the next week. The Venice Carnival is a two-week celebration of mysterious masked balls, parades, theatrical productions, music and general gaiety. In the costumed tradition of carnivals of the 18th century, the streets and various venues throughout the city are filled with activity. The many masked balls and galas held throughout the festivities are a perfect opportunity to donn the traditional hoods, capes and black masks, concealing one's identify and making carnival mischief all the more fun! Many events and activities are free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Men as witches race canals |
Ponte di Rialto Venice, Venice 30100 Italy |
This celebration has a bit of folklore, a little bit of religious tradition and, quite frankly, some cross dressing, but all in good fun. The annual Regatta of Epiphany Witches usually takes place on the day of the Epiphany, January 6. All of Italy celebrates this 12th day of Christmas, but Venice is unique with its kitschy take on historic tradition. Witched-up men race their boats across Canal Grande until reaching the giant stocking hanging from Rialto Bridge. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Roses for the beloved female |
Piazza San Marco Venice 30124 Italy +39 41 529 8734 |
In the old days, April 25th, St. Mark's Day in Venice, was celebrated by a popular procession in the Piazza in which not only religious, but also civil authorities would participate. Today, St. Mark's Day is still celebrated but in a different way. There is a procession in the Basilica and following a widespread tradition, Venetian men give their beloved a red rosebud, a 'boccolo'. Hence, this day is also called the Festa del Boccolo. The procession is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Big festival on the lagoon |
4192 Riva degli Schiavoni (Canale della Giudecca) Venice Italy |
This is Venice's most important festival. It takes place in mid July and commemorates the end of the 16th-century plague. The Redentore church in the Giudecca was also built to celebrate this event. The Genio Pontieri Company builds a bridge of boats across the Giudecca canal so that people can reach the island on foot. During the night Venetians picnic on roast duck, watermelon, wine, and various sweets and wait for midnight when the fireworks display takes place. Watching the sunrise from the beach is a romantic finale. Free admission. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Home of the famous glassware |
Isola di Murano Venice 30141 Italy +39 739586 |
This island in the Venetian lagoon is famous for the glassware it produces. Don't miss the opportunity to see glass-blowers at work; it certainly requires extreme skill to take a lump of glass and turn it into glassware. Most glass workshops and factories can be visited free of charge, and more glassware can be admired at the Museo Vetrario, which displays the history of Venetian glass through the course of time. Nearly all the shops on the island cater to the glass trade. Take advantage of the lean crowds during the off-season winter months. To get there via vaporetto, take either line 41, 42 or DM from Fondamente Nuove or 71 & 72 from San Zaccaria or Piazzale Roma. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Second wooden boat show |
San Polo 2120 (information) Venice 30125 Italy +39 41714066 http://www.veneziafiere.it |
The first edition of Navalia – Venice's wooden boat show, held at the Venice Arsenale – was an extraordinary success and positioned itself straight at the top of wooden boat shows. This year's edition, from 9-12 May, is supposed to be even more promising: the exhibition area has been expanded, exhibitors can enjoy the pleasures of a well-serviced network and it features a series of impressive cultural events. There will be a number of international and national conferences on wooden vessels, and during the show, the national award for the best restoration will be announced. This year Navalia will include some new features, such as painters of the sea and a second-hand wooden boat market. Review © 2007, Wcities |

You know you've always wanted to be a member of the Polar Bears Club, and here's your chance. This tradition has grown in popularity to the point where there are literally thousands of onlookers each New Year's Day morn. If the idea of cleansing the old and refreshing for the new in such a manner does not appeal, then join the amused audience and watch others suffer. There is a small throng of dedicated participants who dunk beneath the chilly waters at Lido beach. Free admission. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dealers, gallery owners, photographers and buyers from all over the world are expected. The exhibition is on at the Marittima Terminal Passeggeri, from 8-10 March. Review © 2007, Wcities |
