Venice attracts many different kinds of people, who come here for many different reasons. In comparison with other Italian cities, 'hospitality' in Venice doesn't come cheap; this may be due to the romantic environment (Venice is known as one of the Cities of Love), or the fact that because Venice has a very particular set-up, transport and services are much more expensive, making the hotels more costly.

Expensive Accommodation

The hotels in this wonderful city have many different qualities: some have historical importance, some offer the best service and some have spawned Italian myths. Gritti, Bauer, Europa, and Monaco are some of the best. L'Hotel des Bains, in Lido, witnessed the disastrous love felt by a middle-aged Dirk Bogarde in the film "Death in Venice". And then there's the Hotel Excelsior, which has played host to numerous international screen stars during the annual Film Festival.

Mid-range Accommodation

Are these places a little too pricey for you? There are accommodations with lower prices and bags of charm: La Residenza, Seguso and Calcina. In Lido, Quattro Fontane is very popular during Film Festival season.

Budget Accommodation

Near these hotels is Venice's Youth Hostel. If this is full there are also hundreds of rooms to rent (popular with students), economical boarding houses and establishments run by religious orders e.g. Foresteria Valdese.

Mestre

Still not found a place to suit you? More and more people are choosing to stay in Mestre, just across the lagoon, which is served by many buses and trains. If you choose to stay here, the sense of romance may decrease but so will the prices you pay, and rest assured, you'll find a wide choice of comfortable hotels.

Riviera del Brenta

If you don't mind the distance and you have a car, you could stay in Riviera del Brenta. There are several villas here, which have been transformed into princely residences. This area is also less expensive than Venice.

Camping

If you like camping then you have to go to Mestre or Cavallino to pitch your tent or park your caravan. The sites here are well equipped and are linked to San Marco by motorboats.

Venice is crowded throughout the year with tourists; a word of advice, however: if you visit during the Carnevale or the Film Festival, you need to book well in advance. If that doesn't ensure you a room try the hotels in Treviso.

Bauer Hotel

Large, Historic Hotel
San Marco 1459
Venice, Venice 30124
Italy

For over a century this hotel has been synonymous with Venetian hospitality and has recently been restored. It was one of Venice's first grand hotels and now it is among the best equipped and most modernized. Near San Marco, its main entrance is on the Campo San Moisè. The hotel's façade can be seen from the Grand Canal. The interior has been entirely refurbished, decorated in Venetian style, it has some beautiful pieces of original antique furniture. The level of service is very high and it has disabled access, something that is rare in Venice. On the top floor, there is a terrace with bar from which one can enjoy a splendid view of the rooftops and the lagoon.

For guests of the Bauer in Venice, there is also the possibility of using various services of their sister hotel in the Lido. There is the option of the swimming pool and the beach, as well as playing golf, tennis and horseback riding.

The Venice Carnival is a two-week celebration of mysterious masked balls, parades, theatrical productions, music and general gaiety. In the costumed tradition of carnivals of the 18th century, the streets and various venues throughout the city are filled with activity. The many masked balls and galas held throughout the festivities are a perfect opportunity to donn the traditional hoods, capes and black masks, concealing one's identify and making carnival mischief all the more fun! Many events and activities are free.

Constructed at the beginning of the 1900s, this was the first hotel to be built on the Lido di Venezia. Directly overlooking the beach, the Hotel Des Bains has preserved the charm that was immortalized in Luchino Visconti's film, Death in Venice. Still furnished in the original Belle Epoque style, it is surrounded by greenery and a private beach. It also offers a heated pool, a children's pool, two tennis courts and a golf course.

On the Lido promenade, this large hotel is characterized by an elegance of olden times. Completely redecorated, the colorful furnishings are reminiscent of the Byzantine style of the Mediterranean. It has three restaurants - the Tropicana, La Taverna and La Terrazza - that offer regional and Mediterranean cuisine. Among the many services offered are a heated pool, a shuttle service to the historic center of Venice, a private beach and a running track. It is right next to the Cinema Exhibition.

With the grand canal providing a perfect romantic setting, and a look at the imposing dome, you get a fair idea of what to expect inside. The lobby with its mile high ceilings adorned with huge chandeliers, invites you into the lap of luxury. The plush rooms with lovely paintings, rich draperies, and all the modern conveniences offer a wonderful mix of old and new. The Club del Doge restaurant not only offers world class cuisine but also gives an enchanting view of the grand canal. Built in 1525, it served as residence to the Doge of Venice. Some of its most esteemed guests have included the British Royal family, Princes of Monaco, and Hollywood Stars. Ernest Hemingway went a step further and termed it the best hotel in Venice (he also has a suite of the hotel dedicated to him).
