Depending on your tastes and where you like to go, Verona and its surrounding areas have a lot to offer: there are large establishments who go all out to be worthy of their stars, forks or chef's hats; there are traditional eateries, sometimes located in the heart of the countryside, and finally there are restaurants located in Garda where first-class produce is at hand to make sublime dishes.

First-rate Restaurants

If you are looking for major names and don't mind splashing out then head for Arche in Verona, where the fish dishes on offer are worth dying for! Or you could visit Desco (to try the veal and ginger with leeks and fried sage) or you could opt for the Tre Marchetti, and taste their celebrated tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and black truffles. Outside the city on Isola Rizza is the wonderful Perbellini, which does everything well, but is legendary when it comes to desserts, especially when they bring in the offelle (traditional sweet biscuits). Coming here is definitely money well-spent, in fact, it's a real investment, given that: the guest (they are not called customers) is treated like a king, the cuisine and the wine cellar bring tears of emotion to the eye, and service is absolutely first-rate.

Traditional Dishes

Even traditional Veronese cuisine can offer up some interesting surprises, for instance, it is not unusual to see horse meat. If seeing horse on the menu, (maybe in pastissada) is a bit of a "rediscovery" a dish containing donkey will definitely be a "new experience" both as an ingredient in a first course or as the main ingredient in a stracotto (normally a stewed beef dish). Which restaurants can you go to to try traditional fayre? Well.... the Gabbia d'Oro on Isola della Scala is famous for its risotti, which are also acclaimed dishes at Capucci in Buttapietra; here you can try a traditional dish known as tastasal (a spiced pork mix). Tastasal is used to get the correct level of piquancy in salamis before they are ready to go on sale. Want to try a recipe using asino? Il Ponte in Brentino Belluno is the place to go for stracotto d'asino, the Bacco d'Oro in Mezzane di Sotto for il brasato all'Amarone (donkey braised in the local Amarone wine), people who want to be a little more adventurous(!) should try the filetto di struzzo (ostrich fillet) at Tamburino Sardo in Sommacampagna. If you like to indulge in cheese after your meal then il Vèzzena (stored in an ancient cave in barriques in Sasso di Bovolone.

If you like to round off your meal with a great dessert (who doesn't?)at the Pergola di Trevenzuolo they serve i fogassin (dried focaccia), at the Bottega del Vino di Verona they prepare the Scaligera version of the budino diplomatico, at Pino Due in Garda (also well known for their fish recipes) they serve the traditional recipe for Sanvigilini with shortcrust pastry and raisins. Alpone, in Montecchia di Crosara, makes dolce di tagliatelle (a sweet pasta dish), while Castello in Valeggio makes torta di grano saraceno buckwheat cake and at Dalla Rosa Alda they have discovered a traditional recipe pissota con l'oio, focaccia cooked in the oven traditional copper receptacles. We mentioned Garda before and its riches: which include fish (naturally) and also olive oil, the best restaurants actually have a list of different oils for you to choose from. There are also Malga cheeses and truffles from Monte Baldo. The Porticciolo in Lazise does a fritto misto di lago (the choice of fish used in this dish depends upon what the fishermen have caught that morning). In Peschiera del Garda, the Cantinone specialises in trout. If you have never tried couscous, then the Caval in Torri del Benaco offers an intriguing fish and couscous recipe. The Stella d'Italia is famous for its pike in a sweet-and-sour sauce with polenta and peperoni. The Milio which is in Verona and looks towards the Adriatic, does wonderful fish dishes and after dinner relax under the beautiful pergola, diners will often come here to smoke after their meal. With this in mind, the restaurant has a Cuban cigar list as well as a list of spirits.

Al Castello

Tortellini in Valeggio
Via Foroni, 18
Verona 37067
Italy
+39 45 637 0649
It may come as a surprise to some, but Valeggio is a prolific producer of tortellini. They are so tasty that, in order to allow diners to appreciate their delicacy, restaurants serve them with light seasoning, butter and maybe a sprinkling of sage at most, or in broth. Al Castello, which is located on the road leading up to Valeggio castle, serves other typical regional dishes, like tortellini with marrow, inspired by Mantovan cuisine. Main dishes include cod, polenta, tripe, stews (all of which are a meal in themselves), but diners should ensure that they leave some space for dessert: buckwheat flans, plums cooked in wine and puff pastries.

Al Caval

Pork with liquorice
Via Gardesana, 186
Verona 37010
Italy
+39 45 722 5666
The restaurant in the Al Caval hotel is one of the best on the banks of Lake Garda, with a menu significantly (but not exclusively) inspired by its surroundings. Starters include bean sprout salad with eel and marsala sauce, followed by breast of guinea-fowl cooked in oil (local extra-virgin olive oil) and colored fennel. First course dishes include green gnocchi on a bed of pike, and the very original Garda fish couscous with vegetables and saffron sauce. To follow there are slices of trout in a potato crust, and the intriguing pork medallions with fried leeks and liquorice sauce. The desserts are excellent, especially the strawberries and kumquats (a little sour), or the chocolate and coffee cake with cardamom sauce. The selection of wines is also very good.

Arche

Excellent, stylish restuarant
Via Arche scaligere, 6
Verona 37121
Italy
+39 45 800 7415
Giancarlo Gioco is known in Verona as the high priest of gourmet dining. After the surprising appearance of fish tureen (scorpion fish, bass and salmon), you can sample home-grown tomatoes with fresh basil, delicious sea-bass ravioli, layers of pasta with seafood sauce, baked sweet turbot with dragoncello, these are followed by the meat dishes, beef filet steak, and veal sweetbread. The dessert menu offers a separate, equally appealing choice: crème brûlée with pistacchio puree, and a range of sorbets. There is a good selection of wines, and the service is faultless, as well as friendly.

Bacco d'Oro

A restaurant in a villa
Via Venturi, 14
Verona 37030
Italy
+39 45 888 0302
Bacco d'oro is in an seventeenth century country villa, and has certainly not broken its deep ties with the region's traditional fare. The salami and meat are prepared and cured on site, as are some of the wines: however, the wine list offers an ample selection, including several lesser known vintages which produce limited quantities. First courses include an array of risottos, raviolis, tagliolini and tortellini. A main course to follow might be braised beef all'amarone, or breast of duck with bilberries. To finish, there is a selection of local cheese available.

Capucci

The rice restaurant
Via Lago di Garda, 12
Verona, Verona 37060
Italy
+39 45 54 0003
In the Grandi Valli Veronesi, this restaurant is in the heart of 'rice country'. The trattoria Capucci has therefore built its menu around rice and risotto. The rice with 'tastasal' is a must; 'tastasal' is pork minced to make a sausage which is tasted 'tasta' before it is made into a sausage, to see if it is salted enough. There is also different kinds of risotto with vegetables or fish as well as meat, such as a delicate risotto which is wrapped in a thin slice of raw ham. Traditional desserts are served here as well as an amazing choice of 400 different types of grappa.

Da Milio

The cigar restaurant
Via Bellini, 2
Verona 37127
Italy
+39 45 91 7144
This is a high class restaurant that pays attention to detail. For example, there is a puros menu, offering the best Cuban cigars for smokers (smoking is permitted under the veranda). There is a mainly fish based menu, with Mediterranean tendencies, such as lobster alla catalana turbot with potatoes, baby squid and fried prawns. There is also a good choice of desserts, try the amaretto ice cream cake. The food is of a high standard, with a large choice of national and local wines as well as a choice of drinks.

Dalla Rosa Alda

For rice fans
Via Garibaldi, 4
Verona 37010
Italy
+39 45 680 0411
This is a place that puts a lot of emphasis on local tradition. It offers pasta and beans served in a traditional way, as well as risotto with 'cucchi' which are special, natural herbs. Also recommended is the tagliatelle with black truffles or 'fasoi enborgne', literally blinded beans. Amongst the main dishes are grilled meatballs, braised beef and beef stew with polenta. As for desserts, try the 'pissota con l'oio' cooked in the oven using old copper containers and local oil. They have two wine lists, one is reserved for Amarone, and the other is more general.

Il Desco

Incredibly elegant restaurant
Vicolo San Sebastiano, 7
Verona 37121
Italy
+39 45 59 5358
This is an incredibly elegant place decorated in a tasteful and refined style. The 16th century caisson ceiling is marvelous, as are the paintings and multi-colored tapestries. One of Il Desco's classics is Escalope of Liver in Recioto and pear sauce. Other menu choices include Scampi and Pea Ravioli. For the next course, there is the unbeatable warm salad with marinated lobster or suckling pig flavored with mint - crunchy on the outside and irresistibly tender inside. For dessert, choose melon slices with Port Granita or pancakes with ricotta and hot forest fruits.

Il Porticciolo

Good provincial restaurant
Lungolago Marconi, 22
Verona
Italy
+39 45 758 0254
This family run restaurant is on the lakeside at Lazise, 24km from Verona. It is a little temple to lakeside cookery. Just the buffet itself is a temptation: some 15 different fish and vegetable antipasti. The typical risotto made with tench is absolutely unmissable. It is a classic Lake Garda dish and is prepared here in the best possible way. There are also other tasty first courses, the tagliatelli with carp or the perch with celery shoots. We recommend the grilled eel, it's cooked in slices in the big fireplace. There are both wines from Verona and Lake Garda. In the summer, dinner is served on the shady veranda which faces onto the lake.

Elegant and expensive restaurant
Via Muselle, 11
Verona, Verona 37050

This restaurant is one of the best in the Veneto. It is situated a few kilometres outside Verona, just off the motorway to Rovigo. It is an extremely elegant restaurant with an innovative cuisine. Typical dishes include fish soup with balsamic vinegar, whisked risotto with parmesan and a rabbit and wild mushroom sauce, and sea bass in a fish soup. The choice of wines is vast and comprehensive, and the staff are polite and professional.

Pino Due

Trattoria on Lake Garda
Localitá Giare
Verona 37016
Italy
+39 45 725 5694
This restaurant is situated in the Garda countryside, around 31km from Verona. The secret of its success is the freshness of the fish it serves up. It is impossible to say what will be on the menu the following day: it all depends on how many of what fish were caught the previous night. You could start with the pike in sauce, followed by the tench risotto, with mussels in brine. For your main course you can have a plate of grilled fish, fresh from the lake, including sardines, eels, and even carp or salmon. For dessert, you could try the 'pastafrolla' with raisins.

Tamburino sardo

Fillet of ostrich
Strada Sommacampagna, 44
Verona 37066
Italy
+39 45 51 6217
This restaurant is located in Custoza, near the site of the Risorgimento battle. One of its specialities is the extremely rare fillet of ostrich. As far as starters go, the 'Onion Vellutata' is ideal for those who wish to try a variety of courses, while the 'Fettucini alla Selvaggia' and the 'Macaroni alla Boscaiola' are rather more filling. These can be followed by boneless hare in pâté with polenta, chargrilled meat or fillet of horse. There is a good choice of desserts, including the 'Torta della Nonna' and the parfait with amaretto and chocolate. The wine list is comprehensive and there are also many brandies available.

Trattoria al Ponte

Donkey stew
Piazza Vittoria, 12
Verona, Verona 37020
Italy
+39 45 723 0109
Brentino is only a little village, but the Trattoria del Ponte - run by the Bridi family for the last thirty years - is well worth a visit. The cuisine is regional, and the restaurant has dispensed with butter, and uses extra virgin olive oil instead. The pasta is fresh and home-made: try the excellent 'bigoli' with duck or guinea-fowl sauce, or the rabbit or hare tagliatelle. The donkey stew is a speciality of the Valdadige region, but the soused trout and the roebuck polenta are also well worth trying. The desserts are home-made and the wine selection is fairly varied. The prices here are extremely reasonable.
