Vienna's history |
Obere Augartenstraße Vienna, Vienna 1020 Austria +43 1 216 1300 http://www.filmarchiv.at/ |
A huge, steel and concrete building stands in the middle of the Augarten. It was constructed during World War II and served as a concrete air-raid shelter as Vienna did not have enough of them. At this time, many people tried to defend the city by firing rifles from its roof at the aircraft overhead. This building is constructed in a way as to make it virtually indestructible, like the other flak-towers to be seen in Vienna. Today, one of them is used as an aquarium, Haus des Meeres. The Augarten is a nice park and in summer there is an open-air cinema. It is also the home of a porcelain manufacturer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nudist area for many years |
In der Bien Vienna 1220 Austria |
The visitors to the Lobau, which is situated in the south-eastern part of Vienna, are in comple contrast to the visitors to the Copa Cagrana. For 100 years people are coming here because of the freedom to go bathing completely naked. Obviously they have been so liberal on occasions that they have got themselves into trouble, but this is a thing of the past. Today you have to walk or to take the bike to come here, because this natural region may not be accessed by cars. By public transport, you take the bus #91A to Ölhafen Neue Donau. An old Viennese legend |
Schönlaterngasse 7 Vienna, Vienna 1010 Austria |
All Viennese children learn the story of the Basilisk: in 1212, there was a Basilisk, a cross-breed of a cock and a toad, which lived in the well at the baker's house. All who looked into his eyes were immediately turned to stone. The clever apprentice to the baker showed a mirror to the beast and so it was turned into stone itself. An inscription and a drawing still remind us of his heroic deed. Walking down the Schönlaterngasse and the little neighbouring roads with their small old buildings is a real trip down memory lane. Biking to Austria's borders |
Vienna, Vienna Austria +43 (0)1 2 4555 (Tourist Information) |
If the wind is on your side (blowing down the Danube) why not plan a grand cycling tour? Wherever you start, you should join the northern bank at the Steinspornbrücke. The Lobau begins near the Ölhafen (harbour) with a wonderful riverside landscape. The way is well signposted, even with signs for restaurants and sights. Eckartsau and Bad Deutsch Altenburg are nice for small excursions. The distance from Vienna to Hainburg is about 60km (40 miles). After rest and recuperation in Hainburg, you can travel back to Vienna either by bike, or by train to Landstraße station (Wien Mitte). Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Danube Canal, for a long time neglected, now boasts a fine cycle path. The path starts near the city centre and leads north to Klosterneuburg. The path meets the Danube near Nußdorf and continues past steep slopes and through forests to Klosterneuburg, where cyclists could round off their trip with a refreshing swim in the lake - or with a refreshing beer in one of the Heurigen taverns! Energetic cyclists could then head on to Greifenstein, Melk, Linz or Passau. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Just next to the Konzerthaus, skaters draw their figures on ice accompanied by music from the wings. In the separate central area pairs dance waltzes on skates. In another separated area in the corner, children are trained in figure skating. A traditionally built wooden house |
Schönbrunn Vienna, Vienna 1130 Austria +43 (0)1 876 6666 http://www.tirolergarten.at/ |
In 1803, Erzherzog Johann built the Tiroler Haus, which was originally used as a farmhouse. In 1920, the last royal cow left the building. From 1921 to 1973 it was served as a restaurant known as Tiroler Garten. This Gasthaus Tiroler Garten was restored and rebuilt as recently as 1997. You can find it just by the upper exit of the Schönbrunner zoo, near the Gloriette. The wooden house was built in the old, traditional way. The corners of the wooden walls are fixed together with dovetails. Inside is also all wooden. The waiters serve in leather trousers. It's really comfortable and full of Old World charm. On the menu is soup with Tiroler Knödel and a children's schnitzel; beer is on tap. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This illustrious commercial history is continued today by an amazing array of stylish shops. Historical taverns and magical atmosphere |
Grinzing Vienna, Wien 1190 Austria +43 1 21 1140 / +43 1 22 4555 |
Vienna is known for its famous heurigen restaurants, traditional taverns serving local wine and hearty food, often accompanied by live Viennese music. The district of Grinzing is full of such establishments, most of which are beautifully preserved and lend the whole district a magical feel. Authentic heurigen taverns hang a branch of pine above the door to indicate the sale of home-made wine. Traditionally, these taverns were small, intimate and great value for money. Fortunately, this still rings true today. Numerous vineyards are located nearby and make a great place for a walk. Follow in the footsteps of Franz Schubert and Ludwig van Beethoven who both found inspiration in the (then unspoiled) surrounding nature. Composer Gustav Mahler is buried in Grinzing Cemetery. Visit an Empress' home |
Lainzer Tiergarten (Lainzer Tor) Vienna 1130 Austria |
To the west of the city lies the delightful Lainzer Tiergarten, a large park-cum-animal reserve where the famous Lippizaner horses spend their summer holidays. In this rural idyll, Franz Josef had the Hermesvilla summer house built for his unhappy wife, Empress Elisabeth, the Princess Diana of her time. Constructed between 1882-86, this rather gloomy house did little to cheer up the depressed Empress and she rarely stayed there. Today, exhibitions are occasionally held on the grounds here, and there is a pleasant café to rest after a walk in the woods. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This island is 20km long and as there are no cars allowed it is a perfect area for roller-skating. It is even possible to skate in winter if there is no snow. Street spots and fun parks |
Various venues Vienna, Vienna Austria |
Downtown Vienna, the skaters meet at two street locations: in the Resselpark, in front of the Karlskirche, station Karlsplatz (U1, U2 U4), and in front of the Ministry of traffic (Radetzkystrasse 2), station Schwedenplatz (U1, U4). Fun parks are in the Prater Hauptallee, corner Rustenschacher Allee, access via station Praterstern (U1) and then on the quite shaky ground the Hauptallee direction East. Unfortunately there isn't a halfpipe there. Another one is in the Auer Welsbach Park, station Schönbrunn (U4) or station Anschützgassse (52, 58), where a halfpipe can be found. A dwelling house as battlefield |
Februar Platz 12 Vienna, Vienna 1190 Austria +43 1 21 1140 (tourist board) |
When the Social Democrats came into power at the beginning of the 1920s, they started a social project to construct more buildings in the hope of improving the bad living conditions in crowded Vienna. The Karl-Marx-Hof is an impressive example: more than 1km long, with pinnacles and thick walls for the balconies, it looks like a fortress. At one time it really was a fortress: in 1934, on February 12th, the building was bombarded with cannons. The revolution called for by the Social Democrats, who hid themselves in the Karl-Marx-Hof and tried in vain to prevent the elimination of the democratic institutions in Austria, was quashed. A skiing pleasure also for night flyers |
Mauerbachstrasse 172-174 Vienna, Vienna 1140 Austria +43 1 979 1057 http://www.wien.gv.at/sportamt... |
If a trip to the Austrian Alps is too far for you to travel, you could do some skiing on the 400m long Hohe Wand Wiese. Here you'll find classical alpine skiers as well as today's snow boarders. The drag lift brings everybody up to the top. Thanks to the floodlighting installation, it can be used until late in the evening, and artificial snow is produced if necessary. If you need a drink, there is a small restaurant in an old bus, the Busstüberl. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Visitors are invited to partake in the many performances given by students at the Spanish Riding School. The finest dressage in the world |
Michaelerplatz 1 Vienna 1010 Austria +43 1 533 90 31 http://www.spanische-reitschul... |
The Spanish Riding School was founded by the Habsburgs in the late 16th century in order to improve horsemanship and to help with the breeding and training of Spanish horses. The Winter Riding School was built in 1729-35 and now provides the venue for classic dressage shows by Lipizzaner horse-riders clad in medieval costumes. The interior is spectacular and hailed as the most beautiful riding hall in the world. Performances are given several times a year, and although tickets are very expensive, they are often sold out weeks in advance. A cheaper alternative is to attend the morning exercises or dress rehearsals. Morning exercises: February-June, August-October, December: 10am-noon daily; tickets available at the entrance. Admission for morning exercises: EUR5-12. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fabulous architecture |
Heiligenstädter Lände Vienna, Vienna 1090 Austria +43 1 21 1140 (tourist board) |
The architect Friedensreich Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser is very well known to tourists for the municipal lodgings he has built in the Löwengasse. His style presents color, nature, and a belief that nothing should ever be even! The suitability of the embellishments to the chimney of the neighboring heating plant was the subject of much discussion in Vienna. Finally, the plant's roof was crowned with a big "hat," typical of Hundertwasser's work. It's a very bright, colorful building - well worth a look. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A service oriented fitness centre |
Heiligenstädter Lände 17 Vienna, Vienna 1190 Austria +43 1 368 7311 |
Since the squash fad in Vienna has calmed down a bit, there is nearly always a free court in the Manhattan. It is very clean and well maintained, especially the changing rooms, where you can find complimentary body milk and perfume. There is a relaxing sauna for afterwards included in the price! Manhattan also runs a shop, in which customers can buy or rent sports equipment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Historic open-air bath |
Arbeiterstrandbadstrasse 91 Vienna, Vienna 1220 Austria +43 1 263 6538 http://www.wien.gv.at/baeder/s... |
This area of the Old Danube was acquired by the blue and white collar workers in the past and there were certain difficulties associated with it. The style, the names of the streets and the public swimming pools in the neighborhood; for example, the Eisenbahnerbad (pool of the railway workers), still remind us of its ancient Viennese history. Today this public pool has been extended to accommodate modern pools and a lot more sports facilities. The old poplar trees give a wonderful shade in the heat of the summer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Universitätscampus "Altes AKH" |
Alserstraße 4 (Haupteingang/main entrance) Vienna, Vienna A-1090 Austria +43 (0)1 4 2771 9670 http://www.univie.ac.at/univer... |
In 1998, the world famous Viennese hospital, the Allgemeines Krankenhaus (AKH), moved to a new building, allowing the University of Vienna to take over its 16th/17th century abode, with its spacious 100,000m2 of parks at Alser Strasse 4. After extensive renovation, Austria's first "real" campus was opened, surely one of Europe's best! Consequently, the institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences relocated to the campus, followed by a number of places to eat and drink. On hot summer days, the entirely pedestrianised campus, with its shady, century-old trees, statues and gardens, bustles with life. There are a number of shops, and its cafes, restaurants, pubs (all open air in good weather), BBQs, beer and wine gardens don't close before 2am. Due to a student clientele, the campus proves a bit cheaper than the city, just 10 minutes' walk away. Events (see their homepage) take place now and then, sometimes in collaboration with the university institutes (e.g. Asian studies: a Tibetan festival; German language studies: literature festivals etc.). An oasis of peace and quiet |
Mechelgasse 2 Landstrasser Gürtel 1 Vienna, Vienna 1030 Austria +43 1 42775 4190 / +43 1 42775 4194 http://www.plantfog.at/ |
A lot of rare and lesser-known exotic plants and trees can be seen in this garden. Empress Maria Theresia realised this project in 1754 to plant the medicinal herbs suggested by her physician. A few years later, this area was changed into the Botanical Gardens, which was then donated to the university. It is an oasis of peace and tranquillity, and is therefore recommended not only for botanists, but also for parents and their children. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The program includes some well-known stories such as "Pezi's Adventures" or "Little Red Hiding Hood and features some really fantastic puppets. For one hour, both children and parents can enjoy the funny and sad world of fairy tales. The shows take place from April to October. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An amazing water-chute |
An der Neuen Donau, 1 Vienna 1210 Austria http://www.wien.gv.at/wasserbau/ |
Directly beneath the Brigittenauer Brücke there is a 210m long water-chute. The top is easily spotted, it is a big can of Coke! The chute drops you in a separated pool, not in the Neue Donau, and so is not dangerous for children. The Wieselburger Bierrutsche is the restaurant here. It offers something for everybody over a number of floors: hamburgers, a champagne-bar and even an open-air discotheque. There is certainly no shortage of fun! Review © 2007, Wcities |
