Hand-made Viennese porcelain |
Obere Augartenstrasse 1 Vienna, Vienna A-1021 Austria +43 1 2 1124 / +43 1 2 1200 http://www.augarten.at |
Those looking to take something typically Viennese home with them should look no further. Founded in 1718, this Viennese porcelain manufacturer has been producing fine, hand-made china for almost three centuries. Two designs are particularly popular: the Viennese Rose (Wiener Rose) and Maria Theresia (green plants), which you can see on plates, cups, vases, ashtrays and candlesticks. The black and white art deco designs by Josef Hoffmann are also wonderful and represent the bridge to modern style. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Multi-functional hangout |
Rahlgasse 5 (between Naschmarkt and Museums Quartier) Vienna, Vienna 1060 Austria +43 (0)1 585 6645 http://www.auxgazelles.at/ |
Proudly declaring itself a "hotel without rooms", this hammam, or Turkish bath, has plenty to boast about. A conglomeration of a spa, café, restaurant and club, it has many daily visitors. Though its various facets have emerged from humble beginnings, the place tries its best to impress. For the complete experience, attempt the steam bath, followed by a spell at the oyster bar and brasserie. Afterward, a cup of thé de menthe at the Salon de Thé would be in order. Next in line is a trip to the cocktail bar to enjoy some Arabic tunes, or a leisurely puff of the traditional water-pipes while sitting on luxuriant carpets. A well-furnished meeting room is also available for rent, should you decide to conduct a corporate bash with a difference. Head on over for a day of comprehensive entertainment! A small pub with Internet access |
Schönbrunnerstrasse 22 Margareten/Naschmarkt Vienna, Vienna A-1050 Austria +43 (0)1 969 0214 |
The Black Lion is near the metro station Pilgramstrasse (U4) and was recently taken over by a new inn keeper. Although the place is not as English as it used to be, it is still a cosy place. The new boss, a sturdy, practical and friendly lady definitly managed to merge insular and central European way of life in her pub. "Strangers get a hearty welcome at the Black Lion" is what she told me, after I visited the place the again after a long absence. And it was true: I found myself wound up in a discussion after a couple of minutes and stayed two pints longer than originally intended. Those who prefer virtual discussions are also welcome as there is a computer in the back room permanently online. And it is a good idea to go online at the Black Lion as the computer is connected via the Chello Net (much faster than telephone lines). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Viennese Meissen porcelain is carried at Albin Denk. For the Persian carpet of your dreams, look no further than Adil Besim with some unrolling to gargantuan proportions. Men and women's fashions can be found in numerous boutiques, offering everything from tailored business suits to chic sportswear. In the 12th Century, the Graben (ditch) was a moat of water in front of the rampart. After it was filled in with earth people used it as a market place. Today it is still a place of commerce. There are many old, well-established shops in the centre of Vienna: the jewellers Haban and Heldwein, Meinl am Graben for gourmet food or Schwäbische Jungfrau, selling bed-linen. Shopping for budget shoppers |
Mariahilfer Strasse Vienna, Vienna Austria +43 1 21 1140 / +43 1 2 4555 (Tourism Board) http://www.mariahilferstrasse.at/ |
After the collapse of the iron curtain, Vienna's eastern neighbours entered and Mariahilfer Strasse became their shopping mile; special offers for household equipment and signs in Czech became the norm. Today, since the completion of construction on the underground, Mariahilfer Strasse has widened its pavements and gained a lot of new stores: Virgin Megastore, Turek, Peek & Cloppenburg, Mango and H&M, to name but a few. On Saturdays during the Advent season the street is a pedestrian zone only. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A Taste of Britain |
Mariahilfer Straße 52 Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 521 96 0 |
British visitors to Vienna need not worry. Their favorite socks and underwear are available at the Mariahilfer Straße branch of Marks and Spencers. While M&S has not caught on in Vienna as much as in other European capitals, there are various other branches located in suburban shopping center. Disappointingly, the food section is extremely limited with no perishable goods but is usually full of expatriates stocking up on tea and shortbread. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mantlergasse 34-36 Vienna A-1130 Austria +43 1 877 44 11 http://www.mediamarkt.at |
This is a very popular chain in Austria with many locations in Vienna and throughout the state. They carry an immense inventory of all kinds of electronic equipment including computers (and all the paraphrenalia), TVs, radios, stereos, VCRs, software, cassettes, CDs, cameras, fax machines, etc. Naturally, the stores carry all the famous and house brands so you'll have every advantage while checking prices against quality against features and options. The sales help is generally quite knowledgeable although it is likely you will have to wait for their attention (it gets rather busy during peak times). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Main Street of Bargains |
Meidlinger Haupstrasse (at Pohlgasse) Vienna Austria |
Hauptstrasse's – literally 'main streets' – can be found in almost every district of Vienna. Most are lined with trendy clothing and accessory shops, bookstores, cheap eats, and shoe stores. While Meidlinger Hauptstrasse is a far cry from the glitz and glam of downtown Vienna, if you're really looking for some good deals it's worth a walk down this street filled with discount stores and off-label goods. Not to worry, the regular fashion chains and a Starbucks await if you don't find your amazing deal of the day. - Christine Keene Review © 2007, Wcities |

A small shop that offers good quality at reasonable prices. The boss himself works here, supported by a friendly team. All age groups are welcome, from grandpa to his grandchild. Classic and modern hair-cuts as well as good service led to success and two branches were opened at Thaliastraße. Established in 1931 as a single bookshop it has since developed into the areas of publishing and distributing, while of course remaining as a retailer with 4 locations including Kärntnerstraße (im Zentrum), MAK, Graz, and The British Bookshop. A large store with 3 floors, it provides quite an ample selection to choose from. Book topics include literature, history, politics, economics, culture, travel, sports, natural sciences and a large children's section. While most of the books are written in German, there is an impressive selection for English readers. Also available is a mail-order catalogue, so you can browse at home! Row, row, row your boat |
Friedrichstrasse 7 Praterlande Vienna, Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 5 8880 http://www.ddsg-blue-danube.at |
Perhaps the most picturesque way to arrive or depart Vienna is by boat along the Danube. The main boat terminal is at Reichsbrucke, near the Vorgartenstrasse U-Bahn station. Ferries and hydrofoils sail daily to Passau, Bratislava, and Budapest from April through October, with additional sailings during July and August. A day trip to Bratislava is possible by travelling up the Danube from Vienna and returning by rail. The boats stop at many other towns along the Danube; check with the ticket office for details. Essentially a local transportation hub, the boats are clean and basic. For Danube pleasure cruises, visitors should go to the terminal at Schwedenplatz. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The most famous cake was invented by the young cook Franz Sacher for the Sovereign Metternich. Very quickly it became well known and often copied. Shakespeare & Company is the insider's tip for English book enthusiasts in Vienna. Situated in the old part of town, the small shop has something of a romantic touch, far exceeding that of the big, modern bookshop chains. Bookshelves reach the ceiling of the two rooms and the narrow hall which connects both. Around 20,000 books are in stock and it is by no means easy to find that rare piece, that is surely there but hidden in the mass of shelves. A big plus is the choice of British and US-American magazines sold here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Alserstraße 4 (Haupteingang/main entrance) Vienna, Vienna A-1090 Austria +43 (0)1 4 2771 9670 http://www.univie.ac.at/univer... |
In 1998, the world famous Viennese hospital, the Allgemeines Krankenhaus (AKH), moved to a new building, allowing the University of Vienna to take over its 16th/17th century abode, with its spacious 100,000m2 of parks at Alser Strasse 4. After extensive renovation, Austria's first "real" campus was opened, surely one of Europe's best! Consequently, the institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences relocated to the campus, followed by a number of places to eat and drink. On hot summer days, the entirely pedestrianised campus, with its shady, century-old trees, statues and gardens, bustles with life. There are a number of shops, and its cafes, restaurants, pubs (all open air in good weather), BBQs, beer and wine gardens don't close before 2am. Due to a student clientele, the campus proves a bit cheaper than the city, just 10 minutes' walk away. Events (see their homepage) take place now and then, sometimes in collaboration with the university institutes (e.g. Asian studies: a Tibetan festival; German language studies: literature festivals etc.). A bustling airport |
Wien Flughafen Schwechat Vienna, Vienna 1300 Austria +43 1 7 0070 http://www.flughafen-wien.at |
Situated 19km south-east of the city centre and extremely close to the Hungarian, Slovakian and Czech borders, Vienna Airport is western Europe's most easterly airport. The airport has a wide catchment area and is particularly popular with those visiting central Europe, with cities like Prague, Budapest, Bratislava, Ljubljana, Munich and Zagreb just a couple of hours' drive away. The airport contains three short-stay car parks (K1, K2, K3) and four multi-storey car parks (1,3,4,C) for longer stays. Those who prefer the comfort of a taxi should head for the taxi rank outside the arrival hall. Drivers can get out of the city quickly on the A4 motorway. An express bus to Budapest runs six times a day. Numerous cafés and restaurants provide a choice of food ranging from schnitzels (Café Johann Strauss) to sandwiches (Take Off). Transit passengers can admire the panoramic views from the International Marketplace restaurant or kill time in The Dubliner Irish pub which hosts live bands and features an awesome selection of whisky. The big one |
Mariahilfer Straße 37-39 Vienna 1060 Austria +43 1 588 37 0 http://www.virgin.com |
Like all around the globe, Virgin has one of the best choice of CDs in the world. The chain calls the place a megastore and there's something in what they say! On the ground floor you will find rock, pop and new releases. Just put on the headphones and listen to the latest tunes! Furthermore there's a fine selection of videos and supply for your Play Station. Classical music, Jazz and Ethno are on the first floor. Taking the escalator downstairs to the cellar, you will end up in the next megastore, the bookshop Amadeus. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sweets for the Sweet and their Sweet tooth as well! |
Rotenturmstraße 16-18 Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 512 85 22 http://www.heindl.co.at |
This is one SWEET store which specializes in all kinds of Viennese confections! Established in 1953 by Walter Heindl and his wife, this Viennese tradition of excellence in candy-making is still intact. They carry the famous European brand chocolates like Mozart, Capucin and Mozartherzen, but even better and unique are the confectioner's own delicacies; both the Sissi-Veilchen and Johann-Strauss-Taler lines are scrumptious and heavenly. If you take your candy seriously, you can take a course on the history of chocolate on their website complete with a test! Review © 2007, Wcities |
