Beautiful pension above the famous Hawelka |
Dorotheerg 6-8 Vienna, Vienna A-1010 Austria |
On the upper floors of a gray but gracious older building just off the Graben (with the famous Café Hawelka downstairs), this family-run hostelry is attractively done up in Old Vienna style, with lots of plants, dark woods, and nice faux-marble baths. Rooms on the inner court are quieter, though the street in front carries no through traffic. The smaller rooms have modern decor, while the larger rooms are decorated in Biedermeier style. Retrospectively designed |
Kirchengasse 41 Vienna, Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 522 6666 http://www.altstadt.at/ |
First opened in 1991, the Altstadt Hotel proved itself a hit rather swiftly. Centrally set in a beautiful patrician house just west of the Museumsquartier and very close to Mariahilferstrasse, it has great decor with a mixture of new designer lighting and bold colored walls, as well as some nice old-fashioned features. The rooms are very spacious, have polished parquet floors and high ceilings, and a handful overlook a peaceful courtyard. The breakfast buffet is superb and the service excellent. Kärtnerstrasse 47 Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 512 93 10 |
This is a tiny pension on Kärtnerstrasse, right in the middle of the First District, just a short walk away from St. Stephan's Cathedral and the Vienna State Opera. All the bedrooms are large and comfortable and have en-suite bathrooms with showers. You can find quieter rooms toward the rear of the hotel. It's perfect for those planning a lot of sightseeing in the city center; abundant shopping and dining opportunities are within easy walking distance to the hotel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Best location in central Vienna |
Rotenturmstraße 1 Vienna 1010 Austria +43 1 533 32 38 |
Apartment Pension Sacher has arguably the best location for a Pension in Vienna. Situated at Rotenturmstrasse, right behind St. Stephen's Cathedral, guests find themselves in the very heart of Old Vienna. The rooms are well equipped and attractively furnished. The pension is owned by a great-great-granddaughter of the chef who created one of Vienna's best-known assets worldwide: the Sachertorte. The management offers lower rates for longer stays. Expect traditional Austrian interior decorating. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stunning designer hotel |
Brandmayergasse 7-9 Vienna A-1050 Austria +43 1 554 51 08 |
Art Hotel Vienna is a chic designer hotel in the Fifth District, combining the worlds of art, culture and traditional Vienna. Color, form and design are merged to produce an air of contemporary innovation and practicality. In contrast to many of the lodgings you will find in Vienna, this hotel favors modern, stylish furniture with a heavy emphasis on design, and modern art hanging on its walls. The only downside of staying here is that it is not all that central. It is, however, close to Margaretengürtel underground station, from where it is only a ten-minute ride to Karlsplatz. All rooms are en suite. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great low season rates |
Währingerstrasse 33 Vienna A-1090 Austria +43 1 405 12 30 http://www.hirners.com/atlanta/ |
Built in 1895, it is a very comfortable Alsergrund hotel with modern furnishings. All rooms are en suite with cable TV and it also rents apartments with kitchens. The friendly, multi-lingual staff offers excellent recommendations for sightseeing and dining. One thing to watch for: prices drop significantly in low season. It is within easy walking distance of the district's best restaurants and bars and only a stone's throw from Franz-Joseph train station. A visit to the nearby Zentimeter is recommended, where generously sized delicious sandwiches are the order of the day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quiet hotel near university |
Fleischmarkt 20 Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 515 23 |
Close to the Old University in the First District, the Austria is a very quiet hotel that offers spacious rooms. As is common in Austria, the rooms have high ceilings, although the furniture has been updated to current fashion. The bathroom's fixtures are rather outdated but yet very functional and spotlessly clean. Downstairs, you will find plenty of places to sit and relax in addition to the breakfast room, which is set around a small fountain. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Offering beautiful city views |
Marco d'Avianogasse 1 Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 512 83 30 http://www.pertschy.com/pensio... |
This nice, family-run Pension in the city center offers accommodation at very good prices for its location and a stylish ambience. The rooms are squeezed onto the third and fourth floors of a big, streetside building that also holds a McDonalds, just off Kärtnerstrasse. One might sum up the approach as a fusion of traditional Viennese hospitality and modern comforts. The ceilings are low, but the rooms are spacious with cozy, feminine decor. Breakfast is served in a long, narrow dining room and is served buffet style. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Eßlinggasse 7 Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 533 89 03 |
Bajazzo is a popular, modern hotel in a quiet section of the first district. Wide French doors open into a cozy lobby furnished with rocking chairs and sofas. All of the guest rooms are equally cozy and comfortable at this family run business. It offers a 24 hour front desk and turndown service is available. From here, you are mere steps away from many of Vienna's top sightseeing attractions. Ask for assistance at the front desk if you need directions, reservations or ideas during your days here. Palatial accommodation |

This is a welcoming guesthouse, run for 80 years by the same family. It is in a beautiful palatial building with a garden in the 17th district. The rooms were recently refurbished and all are en suite and with cable-TV. Guests will find the atmosphere here very relaxing and the rooms comfortable, which makes up for the not so central location. With public transport, however, traveling into the center of town is not a challenge. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Well-preserved Jugendstil hotel |
Schikanedergasse 4 Vienna 1040 Austria +43 1 587 53 02 http://www.carlton.at |
The Carlton Opera Hotel is in a well-preserved art nouveau building, not far from the big outdoor market and Saturday flea market, the so-called Naschmarkt. The Viennese, art nouveau style can even be seen by the door: the elevator sports a wooden frame and the lobby has original beveled glass. The rooms display not only style, but character and have been customized using matching fabrics and coordinating colors. All of the hotel's rooms come with shower or bath and toilet. It is closed in January. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Esterházygasse 33 Vienna A-1060 Austria +43 1 588 70 http://www.austrotel.at/german... |
This is a welcoming, classic, city hotel, in which it is easy to feel right at home. Even the marble lined entrance suggests a refined atmosphere, while the interior design merges turn-of-the-century charm with contemporary comforts. Its striking, kitsch pink facade contrasts with comfortable rooms, a tastefully furnished bar, Barfly's Club, and an elegant breakfast room. What is more, only a few hundred meters from the center of town, you could hardly be in a better spot for sightseeing and getting around. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Glanzinggasse 23 Vienna A-1190 Austria +43 1 470 42 72 0 http://www.gartenhotel-glanzin... |
The Glanzing Garden hotel's name is no co-incidence; it is situated in the middle of the 19th district gardens, but is easily reached by public transport from the city center. The rooms are very spacious, some of them in modern, others in Biedermeier style. The hotel stresses its conviviality and extends its welcome to children. This is a place for some serious relaxation; the hotel's sauna, solarium and gym are available for guest use around the clock. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great location |
Dorotheergasse 3 Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 512 15 31 |
The location couldn't be better; as the name suggests, Hotel Graben is situated in central Vienna, in the Old Town. A public underground car park as well as the metro is in the direct vicinity. Thanks to the structure of the building, each of its 41 rooms has its own character. Most feature art nouveau furniture and all boast en suite facilities, radio and cable television. The foyer, following in this theme, has heavy velvet drapery. Two on-site restaurants, Restaurant Altenberg and Trattoria Santo Stefano, entice guests with typical Austrian and Italian fare. The Hotel Drei Kronen is just outside the Inner ring but is central enough to mean that Kärntner Strasse, the opera and a whole range of other Viennese sights are well within walking distance. The hotel is just outside the Inner Ring; the distance to the opera and one of the major subway stations in Vienna, the Karlsplatz, is easily done on foot. Classic Viennese B & B |
Museumstrasse 3 Vienna A-1070 Austria +43 1 523 44 26 http://www.tiscover.com/hotel.... |
This classic Viennese pension, dating from the turn of the century, is situated above the Bellaria cinema. The Bellaria shows old black-and-white films to a usually rather droll audience—most of them pensioners. The hotel's rooms are massive, with high ceilings and parquet floors, but are rather sparingly furnished. The sitting and breakfast rooms have furry chairs and, of course, chandeliers. A plus for families is that it is right opposite the Museum of Art History and the Museum of Natural History and their extensive collections. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Simple but pleasant |
Josefsgasse 4-6 Vienna A-1080 Austria +43 1 404 19 |
The marble and glass entrance hall is a bit misleading, and yet, this is a good choice. The breakfast room, opening onto a garden courtyard, is pleasant and the bedrooms have high-quality antique imitation furniture and parquet flooring. Long term guests can book one of the small apartments, which come complete with a kitchenette. The location, just behind the parliament and the Ringstrasse, is great because all the important sights in the first district are within walking distance. However, watch the prices: from April to October they tend to be much higher than the ones mentioned here! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nossek is a very popular, small pension on the Graben— one of Vienna's most elegant shopping street. Guests are advised to book well in advance (months even) especially for a room with a balcony overlooking the Graben. The decor in the breakfast room as well as the bedrooms is simple but very elegant, with rug-covered parquet floors, chandeliers, period furniture and tasteful paintings. This location offers the advantage of being close to Vienna's major train station, the Westbahnhof. The eighteen-room pension may not be on a visitor's must-see list, but who really needs a view of the opera? The furniture is minimal and in harmony with the rest of the décor, whilst the windows are double-glazed and do manage to shut out the noise.
