Russian Heroes' Monument

Monument to the Russian Soldier
Schwarzenbergplatz
Vienna, Wien 1010
At the southern end of Schwarzenbergplatz lies the Russian Heroes' Monument, a “gift” from the Russian people commemorating the liberators of Vienna. Under the terms of the State Treaty of 1955, the Austrians committed themselves to paying for the upkeep of this highly controversial monument. The soldier's gilt shield glistens in the midday sun, occasionally (and deliberately) obscured by the jets of water from the Hochstrahlbrunnen, a fountain commemorating the installation of the city's mains water system in 1873.
