Maxingstrasse 13 B Schönbrunner Schloßpark Vienna, Vienna 1130 +43 (0)1 8779 2940 / +43 (0)1 877 9294 http://www.zoovienna.at/ |
In 1752, Francis Stephen Lothringen, the husband of Empress Maria Theresia, founded Vienna's zoo (the oldest in the world) in Schönbrunn. Some of the baroque style buildings are still used and some new enclosures have recently been added (such as cages for tigers, jaguars and elephants). In former times the menagerie served as an entertainment and educational location for the court. The Imperial Breakfast Pavilion in the historical centre of the layout is starting point for the walks. Visiting the zoo is a favourite way of entertainment for Vienna's families, especially at weekends. Consequently the zoo is rather crowded at this time. Review © 2009, Wcities |
