Kite shop par excellence. |
Generali Center - Mariahilfer Strasse 77 Vienna, Wien 1060 Austria +43 1 585 22 83 |
Fly High is said to be the one and only professional kite shop in Austria. Yes, a kite shop. A couple of guys started back in 1988 with what originally was their hobby. Fly High does not only offer the traditional kite but all different styles and models coming from the remotest places on this planet. Fly High also has the section for the real kite-freaks offering all building materials you need to create your own flying instrument. Of course you can take your baby in at Fly High and have it fixed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Antiques and furniture |
Lorenz-Mandl-Gasse 25 Vienna A-1160 Austria +43 1 494 34 90 |
The Glasfabrik is another alternative to all those big chains of furniture stores. What you get at this place (displayed over two floors) ranges from old wooden theater chairs to really romantic sofas. It's not exactly cheap to furnish one's home with all this old furniture, but it is definitely worth dropping by now and then. Glasfabrik also carries antique pieces, although most of it needs to be restored. It's a good idea to bring your car! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vienna's only Italian bookshop |
Kaiserstraße 11 Vienna, Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 524 9776 |
Predictably, Libri Italiani is an Italian bookshop. This small establishment can confidently call itself the one and only bookshop in Austria selling exclusively Italian works. The stock of classic and modern literature may not be the largest, but Libri Italiani should be seen as a work in progress. The focus lies on schoolbooks and learning aids. Please note that the opening hours are rather unconventional. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Shopping with the President |
Gablenzgasse 5-13 Vienna, Vienna 1150 Austria +43 (0)1 98 1500 http://www.lugner.at/ |
The most unusual fact about this building is its owner: Mr. Lugner, head of a building enterprise, ran for the Austrian presidential elections! He didn't succeed in politics, but his shopping centre proved much more successful. You will find more than 70 shops, mainly branches of large chains, such as Hennes & Mauritz (clothes), Humanic (shoes) and Libro (books and CDs). On the ground floor, there is the large Merkur Markt, a super market with an excellent choice of international and exotic foods, fresh and deep-frozen produce. A stage is also fitted to host game shows and musicians. Once in a while Mr. Lugner and his family come by; shake hands with a former candidate for the presidency! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Shopping for budget shoppers |
Mariahilfer Strasse Vienna, Vienna Austria +43 1 21 1140 / +43 1 2 4555 (Tourism Board) http://www.mariahilferstrasse.at/ |
After the collapse of the iron curtain, Vienna's eastern neighbours entered and Mariahilfer Strasse became their shopping mile; special offers for household equipment and signs in Czech became the norm. Today, since the completion of construction on the underground, Mariahilfer Strasse has widened its pavements and gained a lot of new stores: Virgin Megastore, Turek, Peek & Cloppenburg, Mango and H&M, to name but a few. On Saturdays during the Advent season the street is a pedestrian zone only. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An Electronics Extranvaganza |
Mantlergasse 34-36 Vienna A-1130 Austria +43 1 877 44 11 http://www.mediamarkt.at |
This is a very popular chain in Austria with many locations in Vienna and throughout the state. They carry an immense inventory of all kinds of electronic equipment including computers (and all the paraphrenalia), TVs, radios, stereos, VCRs, software, cassettes, CDs, cameras, fax machines, etc. Naturally, the stores carry all the famous and house brands so you'll have every advantage while checking prices against quality against features and options. The sales help is generally quite knowledgeable although it is likely you will have to wait for their attention (it gets rather busy during peak times). Review © 2007, Wcities |

For the whole family |
Mariahilfer Straße 192 Vienna 1150 Austria +43 1 893 15 89 |
A small shop that offers good quality at reasonable prices. The boss himself works here, supported by a friendly team. All age groups are welcome, from grandpa to his grandchild. Classic and modern hair-cuts as well as good service led to success and two branches were opened at Thaliastraße. For those in a hurry or wanting to save some money, it's also possible to receive a hair-cut only (without shampooing). Appointment recommended. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Not the average shoe-chain stuff. |
Neubaugasse 34 Vienna, Wien 1070 Austria +43 1 523 14 49 |
Shoes, shoes shoes. What you get at Shu is definitely not the average shoe-chain-stuff. On the contrary. Shu is a one of the younger adresses for designer shoes in Vienna. Located in one of Vienna's best shopping streets— Neubaugasse— you better make sure that you find enough time to spend hours at this place. Excellent expresso or tea is served while you try on your personal choice. The subdued place was designed by the architects Markus Tomaselli and Bernd Schweizer and sends out a pleasant atmosphere. The place also serves as a meeting point for different cultural exhibitions and events. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vienna's famous jams and pickles |
Yppenmarkt 93 (vis à vis Yppenplatz 5) Johanna Staud Vienna, Vienna 1160 Austria +43 1 4 0688 0521 http://www.stauds.com/ |
This is your place for vintage jams and other luxury products that come from the wonder world of Hans Staud. The company also produces world famous pickles. Just in between Istanbul Airlines and a Turkish bakery you will find a small booth with rather confusing opening hours where Staud's luxury goods are still on sale in an unpretentious and old-fashioned atmosphere as it used to be 30 years ago before Hans Staud started his success story.
