Facultas

Where Freud is still alive
Berggasse 2
Vienna 1090
Austria
+43 1 319 53 06
http://www.bookscout.at
This street is well-known due to one of its former inhabitants: It was here that Sigmund Freud analysed his patients on the famous couch (Berggasse 19)! The publishing house Facultas somehow continues this tradition and brings out books about all medical and pharmaceutical fields, including psychoanalysis. There is also a good choice of more general literature about health available, along with books on alternative methods and treatments. So, now you know where to go in order to find out more about the Oedipus complex!

The shop has a fine homepage, have a look at the numerous reviews which give you a taste for a good women's book!

Although this shop lies in the heart of Vienna, the United States are not as far away as they might seem: the New York branch of this book shop makes sure that expatriates get what they want quickly! There is also a special service for ordering magazines and newspapers from all over the world. Literature and history in German is to be found on the ground floor and the realm of foreign languages on the first, stocking general literature and travel guides. Those who wish to improve their knowledge of foreign languages can choose from a good range of text books here too. A small staircase leads up to the sections on religion and philosophy. Alternatively, you could always just have a look at their informative home page!

http://www.kuppitsch.com/
Just a stone's throw from University, this bookshop mainly sells academic literature. On the ground floor, you will find novels and children's books. Stepping down to the lower floor you enter the really intellectual sphere: philosophy, history, cultural sciences. But as students enjoy travelling as well, there is a good choice of travel literature and dictionaries. In the well-organised department for antiquarian books you might find the out-of-print publication that you're after! The branch in the University Campus offers a fine selection of books in English and French.

It's quite obvious that a University must be around: the streets are full of young people, books under their arms, hurrying to their next lesson. And indeed, the Lehrmittelzentrum lies on the ground floor of the Technical University. It was meant to be mainly a bookshop for students, but has turned into a place for real computer addicts. It offers specialized books and software. The branch at nearby Rilkeplatz focuses on architecture, chemistry and mathematics. And if the future technicians feel like reading an ordinary novel, no problem: Books from all German-and English-speaking countries can be ordered here!

Libri Italiani

Vienna's only Italian bookshop
Kaiserstraße 11
Vienna, Vienna 1070
Austria
+43 1 524 9776
Predictably, Libri Italiani is an Italian bookshop. This small establishment can confidently call itself the one and only bookshop in Austria selling exclusively Italian works. The stock of classic and modern literature may not be the largest, but Libri Italiani should be seen as a work in progress. The focus lies on schoolbooks and learning aids. Please note that the opening hours are rather unconventional.

Welcome to book lover's paradise. It might just be more efficient to describe what they don't have than what they do! On the ground floor are the departments for children, comics and the latest publications. Great emphasis is placed on foreign languages, not just on text books and dictionaries, but also international magazines. On the first floor, you will find paperbacks, including a fine selection of English and American literature, from James Joyce to the latest detective stories. Not to forget the sections for history, nature, esotericism, art and religion.

If you like shopping at flea-markets, you will develop a soft corner for this little cubby-hole of a store-cum-café. Crammed with books, CDs and tons of other stuff, it gives off the air of a garage sale. Want to spruce up your home? Browse through some of the furniture on display. A bar and in-house restaurant only add to the mélange. Nevertheless, the place is well-kept and organized, with charming classroom-like coffee tables and chairs, where one can sip a cuppa while eyeing the goodies on offer.

This salesroom is really tiny, just enough space for a handful of customers! The books are stored on the upper floor. Of course, it is mainly Polish publications that can be bought here and the main focus is on literature, politics and history. Some works by famous writers are available in German, too, along with travel guides about Poland. For those who feel up to learning a new language: you can get text books and tapes here to start with Polish. Good luck!

Prachner

The Family Bookshop
Kärntnerstraße 30
Vienna A-1010
Austria
+43 1 512 85 490
http://www.prachner.at
Prachner labels itself as "The Family Bookstore," but it is really much more! Established in 1931 as a single bookshop it has since developed into the areas of publishing and distributing, while of course remaining as a retailer with 4 locations including Kärntnerstraße (im Zentrum), MAK, Graz, and The British Bookshop. A large store with 3 floors, it provides quite an ample selection to choose from. Book topics include literature, history, politics, economics, culture, travel, sports, natural sciences and a large children's section. While most of the books are written in German, there is an impressive selection for English readers. Also available is a mail-order catalogue, so you can browse at home! Prices are quite reasonable with a range of EUR1-182 per book, but the store manager wants you to know that you can purchase an encyclopaedia set for EUR2,450 as well!

Shakespeare & Company Booksellers

Fine, small English bookshop
Sterngasse 2
Vienna 1010
Austria
+43 1 535 50 53
http://www.shakespeare.co.at/b...
Shakespeare & Company is the insider's tip for English book enthusiasts in Vienna. Situated in the old part of town, the small shop has something of a romantic touch, far exceeding that of the big, modern bookshop chains. Bookshelves reach the ceiling of the two rooms and the narrow hall which connects both. Around 20,000 books are in stock and it is by no means easy to find that rare piece, that is surely there but hidden in the mass of shelves. A big plus is the choice of British and US-American magazines sold here.

A small and unassuming shop located in the 4th district of Vienna at the corner of Kettenbrückengasse and Margaretenstraße boasts that it needs no advertising. Since 1996 the local population of students, artists and other pop culture types have flocked here to catch up on the latest comic books (featuring The Simpsons, Superman, and Transmetropolitan) and other special interest magazines, new and used books, CDs, antique toys and novelty items. 90% of the reading material is in English, the remaining in German.

University of Vienna

Universitätscampus "Altes AKH"
Alserstraße 4
(Haupteingang/main entrance)
Vienna, Vienna A-1090
Austria
+43 (0)1 4 2771 9670
http://www.univie.ac.at/univer...
In 1998, the world famous Viennese hospital, the Allgemeines Krankenhaus (AKH), moved to a new building, allowing the University of Vienna to take over its 16th/17th century abode, with its spacious 100,000m2 of parks at Alser Strasse 4. After extensive renovation, Austria's first "real" campus was opened, surely one of Europe's best! Consequently, the institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences relocated to the campus, followed by a number of places to eat and drink. On hot summer days, the entirely pedestrianised campus, with its shady, century-old trees, statues and gardens, bustles with life. There are a number of shops, and its cafes, restaurants, pubs (all open air in good weather), BBQs, beer and wine gardens don't close before 2am. Due to a student clientele, the campus proves a bit cheaper than the city, just 10 minutes' walk away. Events (see their homepage) take place now and then, sometimes in collaboration with the university institutes (e.g. Asian studies: a Tibetan festival; German language studies: literature festivals etc.).
