The Black Lion is near the metro station Pilgramstrasse (U4) and was recently taken over by a new inn keeper. Although the place is not as English as it used to be, it is still a cosy place. The new boss, a sturdy, practical and friendly lady definitly managed to merge insular and central European way of life in her pub. "Strangers get a hearty welcome at the Black Lion" is what she told me, after I visited the place the again after a long absence. And it was true: I found myself wound up in a discussion after a couple of minutes and stayed two pints longer than originally intended. Those who prefer virtual discussions are also welcome as there is a computer in the back room permanently online. One of the most popular ceramics in this country are produced in Gmunden, a town in Upper Austria. In the 12th Century, the Graben (ditch) was a moat of water in front of the rampart. After it was filled in with earth people used it as a market place. Today it is still a place of commerce. There are many old, well-established shops in the centre of Vienna: the jewellers Haban and Heldwein, Meinl am Graben for gourmet food or Schwäbische Jungfrau, selling bed-linen. Today the Graben is a pedestrian area. But with all the wonderful shops you should not forget to look up from time to time - there are some beautiful old houses with wonderful fronts and gables. Between St. Stephens Cathedral and the Opera house, the Kärntnerstrasse is today a pedestrian area. Established in 1931 as a single bookshop it has since developed into the areas of publishing and distributing, while of course remaining as a retailer with 4 locations including Kärntnerstraße (im Zentrum), MAK, Graz, and The British Bookshop. A large store with 3 floors, it provides quite an ample selection to choose from. Book topics include literature, history, politics, economics, culture, travel, sports, natural sciences and a large children's section. While most of the books are written in German, there is an impressive selection for English readers. Also available is a mail-order catalogue, so you can browse at home! Perhaps the most picturesque way to arrive or depart Vienna is by boat along the Danube. The main boat terminal is at Reichsbrucke, near the Vorgartenstrasse U-Bahn station. Ferries and hydrofoils sail daily to Passau, Bratislava, and Budapest from April through October, with additional sailings during July and August. A day trip to Bratislava is possible by travelling up the Danube from Vienna and returning by rail. The boats stop at many other towns along the Danube; check with the ticket office for details. The most famous cake was invented by the young cook Franz Sacher for the Sovereign Metternich. Very quickly it became well known and often copied. A long quarrel between Sacher and the confectioner, Demel, was decided by the Court of Justice! (The original Sachertorte has a thin layer of apricot jam under the chocolate). In the Sacher shop you can send the excellent cake and wherever you want by post or better yet you may buy it and eat it directly! This 450-foot tower has become a landmark in Vienna and is where the most stylish residents shop. Modern glass lifts and sleek metal and glass interiors provide a continuous aura of chic. In 1998, the world famous Viennese hospital, the Allgemeines Krankenhaus (AKH), moved to a new building, allowing the University of Vienna to take over its 16th/17th century abode, with its spacious 100,000m2 of parks at Alser Strasse 4. After extensive renovation, Austria's first "real" campus was opened, surely one of Europe's best! Consequently, the institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences relocated to the campus, followed by a number of places to eat and drink. On hot summer days, the entirely pedestrianised campus, with its shady, century-old trees, statues and gardens, bustles with life. There are a number of shops, and its cafes, restaurants, pubs (all open air in good weather), BBQs, beer and wine gardens don't close before 2am. Due to a student clientele, the campus proves a bit cheaper than the city, just 10 minutes' walk away. Events (see their homepage) take place now and then, sometimes in collaboration with the university institutes (e.g. Asian studies: a Tibetan festival; German language studies: literature festivals etc.).
