Those looking to take something typically Viennese home with them should look no further. Founded in 1718, this Viennese porcelain manufacturer has been producing fine, hand-made china for almost three centuries. Two designs are particularly popular: the Viennese Rose (Wiener Rose) and Maria Theresia (green plants), which you can see on plates, cups, vases, ashtrays and candlesticks. The black and white art deco designs by Josef Hoffmann are also wonderful and represent the bridge to modern style.

Proudly declaring itself a "hotel without rooms", this hammam, or Turkish bath, has plenty to boast about. A conglomeration of a spa, café, restaurant and club, it has many daily visitors. Though its various facets have emerged from humble beginnings, the place tries its best to impress. For the complete experience, attempt the steam bath, followed by a spell at the oyster bar and brasserie. Afterward, a cup of thé de menthe at the Salon de Thé would be in order. Next in line is a trip to the cocktail bar to enjoy some Arabic tunes, or a leisurely puff of the traditional water-pipes while sitting on luxuriant carpets. A well-furnished meeting room is also available for rent, should you decide to conduct a corporate bash with a difference. Head on over for a day of comprehensive entertainment!

The Black Lion is near the metro station Pilgramstrasse (U4) and was recently taken over by a new inn keeper. Although the place is not as English as it used to be, it is still a cosy place. The new boss, a sturdy, practical and friendly lady definitly managed to merge insular and central European way of life in her pub. "Strangers get a hearty welcome at the Black Lion" is what she told me, after I visited the place the again after a long absence. And it was true: I found myself wound up in a discussion after a couple of minutes and stayed two pints longer than originally intended. Those who prefer virtual discussions are also welcome as there is a computer in the back room permanently online. And it is a good idea to go online at the Black Lion as the computer is connected via the Chello Net (much faster than telephone lines).

Apart from the usual stuff, you can get bikinis, rompers, dirndls or trousers from the 70s. Small and intimate, this shop is filled with fabulous embroidery items handmade by needlepoint artists, ranging from jewelry to purses to picture frames. Of course, there is plenty for sale for those with more modern taste; all one needs is an eye for beauty and an appreciation for craftsmanship. Although a catalog is produced, each item is a "one of a kind" and guarantees cannot be made on any specific item's availability. However, shoppers can request a custom-made item either by choosing from one of the store's existing patterns, or by supplying one for themselves.

If you like shopping at flea-markets, you will develop a soft corner for this little cubby-hole of a store-cum-café. Crammed with books, CDs and tons of other stuff, it gives off the air of a garage sale. Want to spruce up your home? Browse through some of the furniture on display. A bar and in-house restaurant only add to the mélange. Nevertheless, the place is well-kept and organized, with charming classroom-like coffee tables and chairs, where one can sip a cuppa while eyeing the goodies on offer.

This salesroom is really tiny, just enough space for a handful of customers! The books are stored on the upper floor. Of course, it is mainly Polish publications that can be bought here and the main focus is on literature, politics and history. Some works by famous writers are available in German, too, along with travel guides about Poland. For those who feel up to learning a new language: you can get text books and tapes here to start with Polish. Good luck!

http://www.prachner.at
Prachner labels itself as "The Family Bookstore," but it is really much more! Established in 1931 as a single bookshop it has since developed into the areas of publishing and distributing, while of course remaining as a retailer with 4 locations including Kärntnerstraße (im Zentrum), MAK, Graz, and The British Bookshop. A large store with 3 floors, it provides quite an ample selection to choose from. Book topics include literature, history, politics, economics, culture, travel, sports, natural sciences and a large children's section. While most of the books are written in German, there is an impressive selection for English readers. Also available is a mail-order catalogue, so you can browse at home! Prices are quite reasonable with a range of EUR1-182 per book, but the store manager wants you to know that you can purchase an encyclopaedia set for EUR2,450 as well!

Vienna, Vienna A-1010
Austria

http://www.ddsg-blue-danube.at
Perhaps the most picturesque way to arrive or depart Vienna is by boat along the Danube. The main boat terminal is at Reichsbrucke, near the Vorgartenstrasse U-Bahn station. Ferries and hydrofoils sail daily to Passau, Bratislava, and Budapest from April through October, with additional sailings during July and August. A day trip to Bratislava is possible by travelling up the Danube from Vienna and returning by rail. The boats stop at many other towns along the Danube; check with the ticket office for details. Essentially a local transportation hub, the boats are clean and basic. For Danube pleasure cruises, visitors should go to the terminal at Schwedenplatz.

Sachertorte

A sweet temptation
Kärntnerstrasse 38
Vienna, Vienna 1010
Austria
The most famous cake was invented by the young cook Franz Sacher for the Sovereign Metternich. Very quickly it became well known and often copied. A long quarrel between Sacher and the confectioner, Demel, was decided by the Court of Justice! (The original Sachertorte has a thin layer of apricot jam under the chocolate). In the Sacher shop you can send the excellent cake and wherever you want by post or better yet you may buy it and eat it directly! They also sell the highly recommended Sacher Cookery Book, so that you can attempt to make it for yourself.

Shakespeare & Company is the insider's tip for English book enthusiasts in Vienna. Situated in the old part of town, the small shop has something of a romantic touch, far exceeding that of the big, modern bookshop chains. Bookshelves reach the ceiling of the two rooms and the narrow hall which connects both. Around 20,000 books are in stock and it is by no means easy to find that rare piece, that is surely there but hidden in the mass of shelves. A big plus is the choice of British and US-American magazines sold here.

Shoes, shoes shoes. What you get at Shu is definitely not the average shoe-chain-stuff. On the contrary. Shu is a one of the younger adresses for designer shoes in Vienna. Located in one of Vienna's best shopping streets— Neubaugasse— you better make sure that you find enough time to spend hours at this place. Excellent expresso or tea is served while you try on your personal choice. The subdued place was designed by the architects Markus Tomaselli and Bernd Schweizer and sends out a pleasant atmosphere. The place also serves as a meeting point for different cultural exhibitions and events.

This 450-foot tower has become a landmark in Vienna and is where the most stylish residents shop. Modern glass lifts and sleek metal and glass interiors provide a continuous aura of chic. Always busy, the shopping centre has a host of designer boutiques, an entire floor of cosmetics and the perfect bars and restaurants to be seen by Vienna's beautiful people. Boss, DKNY, Ralph Lauren and a multitude of others have branches in Steffl. For the more intellectually minded, the fourth floor has an Amadeus bookshop and a cyber cafe. Chocoholics are catered for as well with an astonishing selection of skilfully crafted confections, some inspired by Mozart. In the evenings, the fashionable use the outside glass lift to zip up to the top of the tower for a stunning view of the city at the Skybar. The adjacent restaurant shares the view, but reservations well in advance are advised.

(Haupteingang/main entrance)
Vienna, Vienna A-1090

+43 (0)1 4 2771 9670
http://www.univie.ac.at/univer...
In 1998, the world famous Viennese hospital, the Allgemeines Krankenhaus (AKH), moved to a new building, allowing the University of Vienna to take over its 16th/17th century abode, with its spacious 100,000m2 of parks at Alser Strasse 4. After extensive renovation, Austria's first "real" campus was opened, surely one of Europe's best! Consequently, the institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences relocated to the campus, followed by a number of places to eat and drink. On hot summer days, the entirely pedestrianised campus, with its shady, century-old trees, statues and gardens, bustles with life. There are a number of shops, and its cafes, restaurants, pubs (all open air in good weather), BBQs, beer and wine gardens don't close before 2am. Due to a student clientele, the campus proves a bit cheaper than the city, just 10 minutes' walk away. Events (see their homepage) take place now and then, sometimes in collaboration with the university institutes (e.g. Asian studies: a Tibetan festival; German language studies: literature festivals etc.).
