Finest brands of vinegar |
Naschmarkt, Stand 111-114 Vienna, Vienna 1040 Austria http://www.gegenbauer.at/ office@gegenbauer.at |
The name Gegenbauer stands for exclusive Austrian vinegar. What you do not get at this shop is the everyday vinegar used in most salads. To understand the business of making vinegar is a science in itself. A real connoisseur can pinpoint the difference between the dozens of different brands and types. A little vinegar bottle might cost you a small fortune, but then the name Gegenbauer does stand for the highest quality when it comes to oil's best accompaniment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kärntnerstraße 47 Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 512 17 19 |
The Viennese are famous for their confectionery - and for good reason! One glance in this pint-sized sweetshop will convince any sweet tooth that they've come to the right place. Viennese confectionery is handmade, fresh and sold by the gram as well as boxed; this shop carries the famous Mozart and Lindt brands, as well as Viennese liquor and coffees to complete the setting for an authentic European "Kaffee und Kuchen". A sweet temptation |
Kärntnerstrasse 38 Vienna, Vienna 1010 Austria |
The most famous cake was invented by the young cook Franz Sacher for the Sovereign Metternich. Very quickly it became well known and often copied. A long quarrel between Sacher and the confectioner, Demel, was decided by the Court of Justice! (The original Sachertorte has a thin layer of apricot jam under the chocolate). In the Sacher shop you can send the excellent cake and wherever you want by post or better yet you may buy it and eat it directly! They also sell the highly recommended Sacher Cookery Book, so that you can attempt to make it for yourself. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vienna's famous jams and pickles |
Yppenmarkt 93 (vis à vis Yppenplatz 5) Johanna Staud Vienna, Vienna 1160 Austria +43 1 4 0688 0521 http://www.stauds.com/ office@stauds.com |
This is your place for vintage jams and other luxury products that come from the wonder world of Hans Staud. The company also produces world famous pickles. Just in between Istanbul Airlines and a Turkish bakery you will find a small booth with rather confusing opening hours where Staud's luxury goods are still on sale in an unpretentious and old-fashioned atmosphere as it used to be 30 years ago before Hans Staud started his success story.
