Hand-made Viennese porcelain |
Obere Augartenstrasse 1 Vienna, Vienna A-1021 Austria +43 1 2 1124 / +43 1 2 1200 http://www.augarten.at |
Those looking to take something typically Viennese home with them should look no further. Founded in 1718, this Viennese porcelain manufacturer has been producing fine, hand-made china for almost three centuries. Two designs are particularly popular: the Viennese Rose (Wiener Rose) and Maria Theresia (green plants), which you can see on plates, cups, vases, ashtrays and candlesticks. The black and white art deco designs by Josef Hoffmann are also wonderful and represent the bridge to modern style. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Multi-functional hangout |
Rahlgasse 5 (between Naschmarkt and Museums Quartier) Vienna, Vienna 1060 Austria +43 (0)1 585 6645 http://www.auxgazelles.at/ |
Proudly declaring itself a "hotel without rooms", this hammam, or Turkish bath, has plenty to boast about. A conglomeration of a spa, café, restaurant and club, it has many daily visitors. Though its various facets have emerged from humble beginnings, the place tries its best to impress. For the complete experience, attempt the steam bath, followed by a spell at the oyster bar and brasserie. Afterward, a cup of thé de menthe at the Salon de Thé would be in order. Next in line is a trip to the cocktail bar to enjoy some Arabic tunes, or a leisurely puff of the traditional water-pipes while sitting on luxuriant carpets. A well-furnished meeting room is also available for rent, should you decide to conduct a corporate bash with a difference. Head on over for a day of comprehensive entertainment! This store carries only Bree handbags, purses, rucksacks, backpacks, and travel bags— all with classic and sophisticated style. You will not find gaudy colors, beads, embroidery or other superfluous embellishments, but timeless elegance which will never go out of style. Prices are quite reasonable. It is also quite easy to shop here as the store's décor is not cluttered with flashy displays— the merchandise is laid out conveniently along the walls and floor racks, there is plenty of aisle space to walk and browse. Beautiful antique furniture, jewelry, silver, paintings, sculpture and porcelain can been seen at this store along the exquisite Freyung Passage in Vienna's first district. The marbled walkway provides the perfect ambiance for this exclusive antique shop, so perfect, in fact, that there are actually two separated rooms along the hallway which house Hr. Unexpected natural beauty unfolds in this very special flower shop, situated in the Roman market hall of the Vienna Stock Exchange building. The white walls of the market hall in the basement of the Stock Exchange building are in sharp contrast with the abundance of plants and flowers of all sizes and colors. You can find everything, from palm trees and cut flowers of the season to water-lilies, all nicely arranged. Since there is a lot of space you can also buy original vases and flower pots and all kinds of garden equipment such as wellies and shovels. In the adjacent restaurant "Hansen" you can enjoy a cup of Viennese coffee or a nice lunch, while resting your eyes on the beautiful surroundings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Finest brands of vinegar |
Naschmarkt, Stand 111-114 Vienna, Vienna 1040 Austria http://www.gegenbauer.at/ |
The name Gegenbauer stands for exclusive Austrian vinegar. What you do not get at this shop is the everyday vinegar used in most salads. To understand the business of making vinegar is a science in itself. A real connoisseur can pinpoint the difference between the dozens of different brands and types. A little vinegar bottle might cost you a small fortune, but then the name Gegenbauer does stand for the highest quality when it comes to oil's best accompaniment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The most famous decor is the green moiré one on a white background, this one you can find in numerous Austrian households and restaurants. All pieces are handpainted, nevertheless you can put them in a dish-washer without having to worry. The shop is well prepared for international customers, goods are shipped in the whole world. Graben (Between Kohlmarkt and Kamtner Straße) Vienna Austria +43 1 21 1140 / +43 1 2 4555 (Tourism Board) |
During the 1300s Graben was located at the very edge of the city. Originally a large moat protecting the ramparts, it was filled in later to create a market area. This illustrious commercial history is continued today by an amazing array of stylish shops. Many old, established shops are located here including Schwabbische Jungfrau featuring linens, Habab and Heldwein the illustrious jewellers, and Julius Meinl am Graben with the finest in gourmet foods. Viennese Meissen porcelain is carried at Albin Denk. For the Persian carpet of your dreams, look no further than Adil Besim with some unrolling to gargantuan proportions. Men and women's fashions can be found in numerous boutiques, offering everything from tailored business suits to chic sportswear. To restore flagging energy, stop in one of the charming open-air cafes and indulge in a luscious cream pastry and rich coffee while gazing at the architectural confections that surround you. A beautiful shopping street |
Graben Vienna, Vienna 1010 Austria +43 (0)1 21 1140 (Tourist Information) |
In the 12th Century, the Graben (ditch) was a moat of water in front of the rampart. After it was filled in with earth people used it as a market place. Today it is still a place of commerce. There are many old, well-established shops in the centre of Vienna: the jewellers Haban and Heldwein, Meinl am Graben for gourmet food or Schwäbische Jungfrau, selling bed-linen. Today the Graben is a pedestrian area. But with all the wonderful shops you should not forget to look up from time to time - there are some beautiful old houses with wonderful fronts and gables. Fountains with drinking water revitalise thirsty visitors and small trees surrounded by white seats are great for a rest. The shops reflect the changing of the times, which has manifested itself more and more in recent years. There are still some old, well-established shops such as Rosenthal (crockery), Sir Anthony (men's clothing) or Backhausen (textiles), but more and more international chains, such as Orsay, Pimkie or H&M seem to be taking over, so there is also plenty on offer for younger people. Friedrichstrasse 7 Praterlande Vienna, Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 5 8880 http://www.ddsg-blue-danube.at |
Perhaps the most picturesque way to arrive or depart Vienna is by boat along the Danube. The main boat terminal is at Reichsbrucke, near the Vorgartenstrasse U-Bahn station. Ferries and hydrofoils sail daily to Passau, Bratislava, and Budapest from April through October, with additional sailings during July and August. A day trip to Bratislava is possible by travelling up the Danube from Vienna and returning by rail. The boats stop at many other towns along the Danube; check with the ticket office for details. Essentially a local transportation hub, the boats are clean and basic. For Danube pleasure cruises, visitors should go to the terminal at Schwedenplatz. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Shakespeare & Company is the insider's tip for English book enthusiasts in Vienna. Situated in the old part of town, the small shop has something of a romantic touch, far exceeding that of the big, modern bookshop chains. Bookshelves reach the ceiling of the two rooms and the narrow hall which connects both. Around 20,000 books are in stock and it is by no means easy to find that rare piece, that is surely there but hidden in the mass of shelves. A big plus is the choice of British and US-American magazines sold here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Always busy, the shopping centre has a host of designer boutiques, an entire floor of cosmetics and the perfect bars and restaurants to be seen by Vienna's beautiful people. Boss, DKNY, Ralph Lauren and a multitude of others have branches in Steffl. For the more intellectually minded, the fourth floor has an Amadeus bookshop and a cyber cafe. Chocoholics are catered for as well with an astonishing selection of skilfully crafted confections, some inspired by Mozart. In the evenings, the fashionable use the outside glass lift to zip up to the top of the tower for a stunning view of the city at the Skybar. The adjacent restaurant shares the view, but reservations well in advance are advised. Review © 2007, Wcities |

During the middle of the day, Stein serves up excellent lunchtime meals and snacks, coffee and cakes in late afternoon. At night, it transforms itself into a trendy hangout where students and professors tend to congregate. Several computers are available so customers can surf the Net and check their e-mails. Write in great style |
Kärntner Straße 9 Vienna 1010 Austria +43 1 512 36 78 0 http://www.theyer-hardtmuth.at |
If you had come to Vienna in 1733, you would have found Theyer & Hardtmuth at the very same spot! The shop might have looked a bit different, but today it offers exquisite writing utensils and more in an elegant atmosphere. Fountain pens are from the best brands, like Parker, Montblanc and Cartier which stand for highest quality. You will also find all kinds of paperware, calendars and anything you need for your office. In the department for presents you can get the famous crystal-figures by Swarowski, but also some less common souvenirs, like playing-cards with pictures of Sissi or Mozart. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sweets for the Sweet and their Sweet tooth as well! |
Rotenturmstraße 16-18 Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 512 85 22 http://www.heindl.co.at |
This is one SWEET store which specializes in all kinds of Viennese confections! Established in 1953 by Walter Heindl and his wife, this Viennese tradition of excellence in candy-making is still intact. They carry the famous European brand chocolates like Mozart, Capucin and Mozartherzen, but even better and unique are the confectioner's own delicacies; both the Sissi-Veilchen and Johann-Strauss-Taler lines are scrumptious and heavenly. If you take your candy seriously, you can take a course on the history of chocolate on their website complete with a test! Review © 2007, Wcities |
