Trendy and relaxing |
Neustiftgasse 69 Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 526 65 60 |
It seems as if haircutting and general well-being of the customers are equally important here. Relaxing music, calm and a minimalistic interior make you feel comfortable as soon as you are stepping in. The young and talented team is popular with a modish crowd that appreciates the creativity and high quality. The hairdresser will allow for at least one hour to change your looks. Multi-functional hangout |
Rahlgasse 5 (between Naschmarkt and Museums Quartier) Vienna, Vienna 1060 Austria +43 (0)1 585 6645 http://www.auxgazelles.at/ |
Proudly declaring itself a "hotel without rooms", this hammam, or Turkish bath, has plenty to boast about. A conglomeration of a spa, café, restaurant and club, it has many daily visitors. Though its various facets have emerged from humble beginnings, the place tries its best to impress. For the complete experience, attempt the steam bath, followed by a spell at the oyster bar and brasserie. Afterward, a cup of thé de menthe at the Salon de Thé would be in order. Next in line is a trip to the cocktail bar to enjoy some Arabic tunes, or a leisurely puff of the traditional water-pipes while sitting on luxuriant carpets. A well-furnished meeting room is also available for rent, should you decide to conduct a corporate bash with a difference. Head on over for a day of comprehensive entertainment! A small pub with Internet access |
Schönbrunnerstrasse 22 Margareten/Naschmarkt Vienna, Vienna A-1050 Austria +43 (0)1 969 0214 |
The Black Lion is near the metro station Pilgramstrasse (U4) and was recently taken over by a new inn keeper. Although the place is not as English as it used to be, it is still a cosy place. The new boss, a sturdy, practical and friendly lady definitly managed to merge insular and central European way of life in her pub. "Strangers get a hearty welcome at the Black Lion" is what she told me, after I visited the place the again after a long absence. And it was true: I found myself wound up in a discussion after a couple of minutes and stayed two pints longer than originally intended. Those who prefer virtual discussions are also welcome as there is a computer in the back room permanently online. And it is a good idea to go online at the Black Lion as the computer is connected via the Chello Net (much faster than telephone lines). Review © 2007, Wcities |

The elegant specialist |
Mariahilfer Straße 38-40 (Gerngross) Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 535 53 35 http://www.bundy.at/ |
The atmosphere is really exclusive here: a beautiful Art Nouveau building accomodates this shop. The customers are equally elegant and appreciate the perfect service. The Bundy brothers and their staff are real professionals, particularly during the ball season the place is very busy! The prices are quite high, but this is one of Vienna's most famous hairdressers! The average charge for women is EUR60, for men EUR38. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kite shop par excellence. |
Generali Center - Mariahilfer Strasse 77 Vienna, Wien 1060 Austria +43 1 585 22 83 |
Fly High is said to be the one and only professional kite shop in Austria. Yes, a kite shop. A couple of guys started back in 1988 with what originally was their hobby. Fly High does not only offer the traditional kite but all different styles and models coming from the remotest places on this planet. Fly High also has the section for the real kite-freaks offering all building materials you need to create your own flying instrument. Of course you can take your baby in at Fly High and have it fixed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Finest brands of vinegar |
Naschmarkt, Stand 111-114 Vienna, Vienna 1040 Austria http://www.gegenbauer.at/ |
The name Gegenbauer stands for exclusive Austrian vinegar. What you do not get at this shop is the everyday vinegar used in most salads. To understand the business of making vinegar is a science in itself. A real connoisseur can pinpoint the difference between the dozens of different brands and types. A little vinegar bottle might cost you a small fortune, but then the name Gegenbauer does stand for the highest quality when it comes to oil's best accompaniment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Centrally-located department store |
Kirchengasse 6-8 Vienna, Vienna 1070 Austria |
Gerngross is a department store on one of Vienna's biggest shopping miles, the Mariahilferstrasse. The huge building features everything required for a decent shopping trip, from food & fashion to electronics & entertainment and at the top of the building, a couple of first class restaurants and cafes are provided for diners. In summer, the open-air terrace is highly recommended. Do not be alarmed by the given address, there are entrances all around the building! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cheap and trendy |
Mariahilfer Straße 41-43 (Mariahilfer Straße 78-80) Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 585 84 000 http://www.hm.com |
Ever since their opening in Vienna, they are a striking success. Several branches are located at Mariahilfer Straße. Walking down this street, you get the impression that everybody has a H & M shopping bag. Clothes are mainly for younger people, always trendy and at unbeatable prices. Quality is ok, but you can't expect the products to stay in shape eternally. But anyway, next season there'll be a new trend! Departments for men, women (incl. larger sizes, pregnancy fashion) and children. More branches at Kärntner Straße, Lugner City and SCS. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Handiwork in a beautiful quarter |
Spittelberggasse Vienna, Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 21 1140 / +43 1 2 4555 (Tourism Board) |
The small houses along here were built in the 18th century and with its cobbled pavement and narrow-streets, this is the perfect neighbourhood for artists. Here, you can find small shops with antiques and hand-made silver goods, dolls, leather goods, or simply old, beautifully decorated electric light bulbs. The opening hours of the different shops can vary. During the festive season there is always a lovely Adventmarkt. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vienna's only Italian bookshop |
Kaiserstraße 11 Vienna, Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 524 9776 |
Predictably, Libri Italiani is an Italian bookshop. This small establishment can confidently call itself the one and only bookshop in Austria selling exclusively Italian works. The stock of classic and modern literature may not be the largest, but Libri Italiani should be seen as a work in progress. The focus lies on schoolbooks and learning aids. Please note that the opening hours are rather unconventional. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Shopping for budget shoppers |
Mariahilfer Strasse Vienna, Vienna Austria +43 1 21 1140 / +43 1 2 4555 (Tourism Board) http://www.mariahilferstrasse.at/ |
After the collapse of the iron curtain, Vienna's eastern neighbours entered and Mariahilfer Strasse became their shopping mile; special offers for household equipment and signs in Czech became the norm. Today, since the completion of construction on the underground, Mariahilfer Strasse has widened its pavements and gained a lot of new stores: Virgin Megastore, Turek, Peek & Cloppenburg, Mango and H&M, to name but a few. On Saturdays during the Advent season the street is a pedestrian zone only. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A Taste of Britain |
Mariahilfer Straße 52 Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 521 96 0 |
British visitors to Vienna need not worry. Their favorite socks and underwear are available at the Mariahilfer Straße branch of Marks and Spencers. While M&S has not caught on in Vienna as much as in other European capitals, there are various other branches located in suburban shopping center. Disappointingly, the food section is extremely limited with no perishable goods but is usually full of expatriates stocking up on tea and shortbread. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Jewelery for eccentrics |
Gumpendorfer Straße 81 Vienna, Vienna A-1060 Austria +43 (0)1 599 2545 http://www.frey-wille.com/ |

Micheala Frey's designs are exotic, eccentric and absolutely "must have". The selection includes pendants, brooches, earrings, rings, bracelets and scarves. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Knick-knack store |
Gumpendorferstrasse 10-12 Vienna, Vienna 1060 Austria +43 (0)1 581 0489 http://www.phil.info/ |
If you like shopping at flea-markets, you will develop a soft corner for this little cubby-hole of a store-cum-café. Crammed with books, CDs and tons of other stuff, it gives off the air of a garage sale. Want to spruce up your home? Browse through some of the furniture on display. A bar and in-house restaurant only add to the mélange. Nevertheless, the place is well-kept and organized, with charming classroom-like coffee tables and chairs, where one can sip a cuppa while eyeing the goodies on offer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dzien dobry |
Burggasse 22 Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 526 31 14 |
This salesroom is really tiny, just enough space for a handful of customers! The books are stored on the upper floor. Of course, it is mainly Polish publications that can be bought here and the main focus is on literature, politics and history. Some works by famous writers are available in German, too, along with travel guides about Poland. For those who feel up to learning a new language: you can get text books and tapes here to start with Polish. Good luck! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Not the average shoe-chain stuff. |
Neubaugasse 34 Vienna, Wien 1070 Austria +43 1 523 14 49 |
Shoes, shoes shoes. What you get at Shu is definitely not the average shoe-chain-stuff. On the contrary. Shu is a one of the younger adresses for designer shoes in Vienna. Located in one of Vienna's best shopping streets— Neubaugasse— you better make sure that you find enough time to spend hours at this place. Excellent expresso or tea is served while you try on your personal choice. The subdued place was designed by the architects Markus Tomaselli and Bernd Schweizer and sends out a pleasant atmosphere. The place also serves as a meeting point for different cultural exhibitions and events. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pop Culture in Vienna! |
Margaretenstraße 45 Vienna A-1040 Austria +43 1 586 38 10 |
A small and unassuming shop located in the 4th district of Vienna at the corner of Kettenbrückengasse and Margaretenstraße boasts that it needs no advertising. Since 1996 the local population of students, artists and other pop culture types have flocked here to catch up on the latest comic books (featuring The Simpsons, Superman, and Transmetropolitan) and other special interest magazines, new and used books, CDs, antique toys and novelty items. 90% of the reading material is in English, the remaining in German.
