Centrally-located department store |
Kirchengasse 6-8 Vienna, Vienna 1070 Austria |
Gerngross is a department store on one of Vienna's biggest shopping miles, the Mariahilferstrasse. The huge building features everything required for a decent shopping trip, from food & fashion to electronics & entertainment and at the top of the building, a couple of first class restaurants and cafes are provided for diners. In summer, the open-air terrace is highly recommended. Do not be alarmed by the given address, there are entrances all around the building! Review © 2007, Wcities |

A beautiful shopping street |
Graben Vienna, Vienna 1010 Austria +43 (0)1 21 1140 (Tourist Information) |
In the 12th Century, the Graben (ditch) was a moat of water in front of the rampart. After it was filled in with earth people used it as a market place. Today it is still a place of commerce. There are many old, well-established shops in the centre of Vienna: the jewellers Haban and Heldwein, Meinl am Graben for gourmet food or Schwäbische Jungfrau, selling bed-linen. Today the Graben is a pedestrian area. But with all the wonderful shops you should not forget to look up from time to time - there are some beautiful old houses with wonderful fronts and gables. Shopping in a contemporary spirit |
Kärntnerstraße Vienna, Vienna 1010 Austria +43 1 21 1140 (tourist board) |
Between St. Stephens Cathedral and the Opera house, the Kärntnerstrasse is today a pedestrian area. Fountains with drinking water revitalise thirsty visitors and small trees surrounded by white seats are great for a rest. The shops reflect the changing of the times, which has manifested itself more and more in recent years. There are still some old, well-established shops such as Rosenthal (crockery), Sir Anthony (men's clothing) or Backhausen (textiles), but more and more international chains, such as Orsay, Pimkie or H&M seem to be taking over, so there is also plenty on offer for younger people. Shopping with the President |
Gablenzgasse 5-13 Vienna, Vienna 1150 Austria +43 (0)1 98 1500 http://www.lugner.at/ |
The most unusual fact about this building is its owner: Mr. Lugner, head of a building enterprise, ran for the Austrian presidential elections! He didn't succeed in politics, but his shopping centre proved much more successful. You will find more than 70 shops, mainly branches of large chains, such as Hennes & Mauritz (clothes), Humanic (shoes) and Libro (books and CDs). On the ground floor, there is the large Merkur Markt, a super market with an excellent choice of international and exotic foods, fresh and deep-frozen produce. A stage is also fitted to host game shows and musicians. Once in a while Mr. Lugner and his family come by; shake hands with a former candidate for the presidency! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Department Store for Home Decorating |
Hütteldorferstraße 23 Vienna, Vienna A-1150 Austria +43 1 982 9426 http://www.lutz.at |
This large department store has 3 floors mainly consisting of furniture for every room, however, you can buy all kinds of other housewares including tableware, bed linens, towels, pillows, kitchenware, holiday decorations, artificial plants, posters and picture frames, clocks, knickknacks, rugs, lamps—you need it for your house, you can buy it here! The prices are very reasonable and the quality of the merchandise is quite decent. There is even a restaurant where you can have a meal or the traditional Kaffee und Kuchen after you have exhausted yourself with shopping. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A Taste of Britain |
Mariahilfer Straße 52 Vienna 1070 Austria +43 1 521 96 0 |
British visitors to Vienna need not worry. Their favorite socks and underwear are available at the Mariahilfer Straße branch of Marks and Spencers. While M&S has not caught on in Vienna as much as in other European capitals, there are various other branches located in suburban shopping center. Disappointingly, the food section is extremely limited with no perishable goods but is usually full of expatriates stocking up on tea and shortbread. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Main Street of Bargains |
Meidlinger Haupstrasse (at Pohlgasse) Vienna Austria |
Hauptstrasse's – literally 'main streets' – can be found in almost every district of Vienna. Most are lined with trendy clothing and accessory shops, bookstores, cheap eats, and shoe stores. While Meidlinger Hauptstrasse is a far cry from the glitz and glam of downtown Vienna, if you're really looking for some good deals it's worth a walk down this street filled with discount stores and off-label goods. Not to worry, the regular fashion chains and a Starbucks await if you don't find your amazing deal of the day. - Christine Keene Review © 2007, Wcities |

Chic shopping centre with a spectacular view |
Kärntner Strasse 19 Vienna, Vienna A-1010 Austria +43 1 21 1140 / +43 1 2 4555 (Tourism Board) http://www.kaufhaus-steffl.at/ |
This 450-foot tower has become a landmark in Vienna and is where the most stylish residents shop. Modern glass lifts and sleek metal and glass interiors provide a continuous aura of chic. Always busy, the shopping centre has a host of designer boutiques, an entire floor of cosmetics and the perfect bars and restaurants to be seen by Vienna's beautiful people. Boss, DKNY, Ralph Lauren and a multitude of others have branches in Steffl. For the more intellectually minded, the fourth floor has an Amadeus bookshop and a cyber cafe. Chocoholics are catered for as well with an astonishing selection of skilfully crafted confections, some inspired by Mozart. In the evenings, the fashionable use the outside glass lift to zip up to the top of the tower for a stunning view of the city at the Skybar. The adjacent restaurant shares the view, but reservations well in advance are advised. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Universitätscampus "Altes AKH" |
Alserstraße 4 (Haupteingang/main entrance) Vienna, Vienna A-1090 Austria +43 (0)1 4 2771 9670 http://www.univie.ac.at/univer... |
In 1998, the world famous Viennese hospital, the Allgemeines Krankenhaus (AKH), moved to a new building, allowing the University of Vienna to take over its 16th/17th century abode, with its spacious 100,000m2 of parks at Alser Strasse 4. After extensive renovation, Austria's first "real" campus was opened, surely one of Europe's best! Consequently, the institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences relocated to the campus, followed by a number of places to eat and drink. On hot summer days, the entirely pedestrianised campus, with its shady, century-old trees, statues and gardens, bustles with life. There are a number of shops, and its cafes, restaurants, pubs (all open air in good weather), BBQs, beer and wine gardens don't close before 2am. Due to a student clientele, the campus proves a bit cheaper than the city, just 10 minutes' walk away. Events (see their homepage) take place now and then, sometimes in collaboration with the university institutes (e.g. Asian studies: a Tibetan festival; German language studies: literature festivals etc.).
