Chinatown is a small historic neighborhood that is easily accessible by Metro or foot from downtown Washington. The neighborhood is marked by the colorful Friendship Archway, and many of the city's Asian restaurants and shops are found here. Chinatown is the site of the popular Chinese New Year's Day parade. It's also home to the new MCI Center, an entertainment and sports complex. After being renovated in 2004, Chinatown now has a bustling nightlife and shopping scene that includes some high-end restaurants and department stores. Parts of Chinatown have declined and been torn down over the years, and high real estate costs ran some of the ethnic population out to the suburbs. The famous Asian-American family-owned restaurants and stores are still there, but over time, national chains like Starbucks and CVS, complete with Chinese signs, have moved in beside them.
