This annual summer Washington Carribbean Carnival is a popular event celebrating the island cultures, drawing 300,000 spectators annually. The Carnival features a parade with floats representing the island nations, with Carribbean citizens performing traditional dance, wearing cultural garments, and displaying their nation's flags: Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Puerto Rico, etc. Steel bands provide festive music as they march along, and local Caribbean acts are scheduled throughout the festival. The carnival also includes a food court, highlighting everything from traditional Caribbean fare to Chinese and American food, including roti, curry chicken, jerk chicken, Pelau, red beans, rice, and shark. The Caribbean Carnival is the fastest growing carnival in North America, and is a fun time for everyone.
