Celebrating emancipation |
Holland Lane African American Heritage Park Washington DC, VA 22314 +1 703 838 4356 |
On June 19, 1865, two years after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, slaves in Texas finally learned they had been freed. Their celebration is commemorated today in an annual national event. In Alexandria, festivities take on a family atmosphere with celebrations in its downtown African-American Heritage Park. Visitors enjoy live entertainment, an abundance of food, and a fun and lively spirit. The event is highlighted with a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. Review © 2009, Wcities |
