The National Mall can be considered the grand exhibition gallery of the United States. First designed by L'Enfant in 1795, the French architect's largely unfinished plan was based on the large grand boulevards that graced the capitals of Europe. The grounds experienced a tumultuous history, from serving as both slaughterhouse and weapon's factory during the Civil War to a B and P railroad depot shortly thereafter. It wasn't until 1902 that Congress acted to restore and redevelop the Mall in the spirit of L'Enfant's "Grand Avenue." Today, the Mall houses eleven museums, the Department of Agriculture and some of America's greatest landmark monuments. Review © 2009, Wcities |
