Dymocks, established as a retailer in Australia since 1879, is a favourite with bookworms on this side of the Tasman also. The beauty of Dymocks is the attention to the customer, especially with respect to the provision of comfy sofas on which the avid literature lover can easily while away a cold winter's afternoon. The range is phenomenal and if you do not find what you are looking for at first glance, it can probably be ordered through their service counter. The travel section is particularly good, and there are many local books and guides.

This barber is ideally placed for those needing a spruce up on the way to or from the office. You can not miss this place with its traditional red, white and blue pillars out the front. Haircuts are reasonable (from NZD15 for adults and NZD12 for children) and while you wait you can browse through the historic memorabilia that fills up the nooks and crannies. This is also a good place to stock up on other grooming products like razors, shaving soap, pomades, brillantines, tonics, shoe polishes and brushes. It does not get more friendly or convenient.

Established in 1983, Rumbles has been delighting the tastes of Wellington wine connoisseurs for more than 15 years and is still going strong. A veritable library of wines, Bacchus would approve of the extensive and wide-ranging cellar selection, though critics beware; management has little toleration of gold-medal groupies! Rumbles are unashamed purveyors of exotic wines, with 80% of their stock originating in Europe. You will need time to peruse the 300 French wines alone, but do not go past a cheeky little Lebanese number for a dinner accompaniment with a difference.

Are you looking for a special something, with an almost new feel to it, but got no money? Then try this place. Nestled in the heart of Thorndon Village you could easily think, thanks to the pleasant decor, that the shop sold new, rather than almost new, gear. It does not. Poke around and you will probably find someone's Chrissie Potter cast-off at a third the original price and maybe some Ashley Fogel, Country Road and Jean Jones gear as well. Also sells a small range of second hand shoes, sunglasses and handbags.
