Brooklyn Cafe

Brooklyn's focal point
5 Todman Street
Brooklyn
Wellington 6002
New Zealand
+64 4 385 3592
Established in the early 1990s, this cafe occupies a great corner site in Brooklyn Village and is a real community gathering point. The building dates back to 1895, and features a wooden interior with fresh cream walls, and large windows ensuring plenty of sunshine (on a good day). The restaurant serves light meals, all day brunches and dinner. The menu is fresh and varied. Try the Salmon Fillet with Vegetables on Parmesan Cream Fettuccine or stick to a rib-eye steak. An excellent wine cellar compliments the meals.

Golden Lotus

Spicy suburban specials
199-201 Ohiro Road
Brooklyn
Wellington 6002
New Zealand
+64 4 382 8161
Great food is not restricted to Wellington's city centre, it also thrives in the suburbs. So head up Brooklyn hill and try some good Thai food and suburban hospitality. Located next to the Penthouse Cinema so dining and a movie is an obvious choice. The decor is modern and mellow with fresh wood, neutral tones and touches of Thai gold. Offers discerning clients a varied menu, at a touch above average prices. Try the Chicken, Beef or Pork Stir-fry With Onions, Chillies and Spring Onions. Fish lovers are also spoiled with several choices.

John Street Bar & Grill

Try this joint
16 Riddiford Street
Newtown
Wellington 6002
New Zealand
+64 4 389 0470
Situated on the city fringe in cosmopolitan Newtown, this is the kind of place where the chef is happy to rustle you up something special. Divided into lounge bar and restaurant, it is bright, cosy and relaxed with a slight a 1970s feel. Have a drink at the candlelit bar in the evening before your meal. The sidewalk tables are pleasant on windless afternoons. Serves brunch and dinner. Mains, such as JSG Burgers or Vegetarian Stir-fry on Rice are reasonably priced. A Grilled Steak is slightly dearer. Licensed.

Original Thai Restaurant

Quality suburban kitchen
155 The Parade
Island Bay
Wellington 6002
New Zealand
+64 4 383 5596
For high quality reasonably priced Thai food head to this suburban restaurant in Island Bay village. Do not expect all the frills here just honest Thai chilli dishes and curries in a rather pedestrian setting. Serves satay, of course, and a reasonable range of seafood and chicken dishes in spicy but delicately flavoured sauces. While frequented primarily by Island Bay locals and others from the Eastern suburbs, it is well worth a special trip, or stop in after a day at the beach. Only open for dinner. Not licensed.
