If you want to look sporty |
12 Coney Street York YO1 9NA United Kingdom +44 1904 64 0722 http://www.allsports.co.uk |
Although this store sells more sports fashion items than actual sports equipment, there is plenty to choose from. And for those that insist upon worshiping at the red altar, there is a whole section devoted to Manchester United merchandise. There is a slightly antiseptic quality to the air here, counterbalanced by the rubber of all the boots and trainers. If such things don't faze you, then you will find this shop an ideal place to visit, especially if you just want to look sporty. Anyone wanting to actually physically do some sport may want to look elsewhere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Very feminine with lots of floral designs, the collection consists of classic separates and easy to wear flowing fabrics. Dresses and skirts are rich in supply and many items are 100 per cent linen. There is also some very pretty jersey nightwear and particularly enchanting for little girls are dresses with matching headscarves. Picturesque Shambles |
The Shambles Gallery 10 The Shambles York YO1 7LZ United Kingdom +44 1904 65 6470 |
Set in the famous, picturesque Shambles in the centre of York, this gallery is quite special. Not only does it have a wonderful display of Prints and Pottery for sale but if you speak to the owner nicely he will tell you the history of the gallery. He will point out the Priest Hole in the corner of the room and tell you about the days when it was a medieval butchers shop [all the original trappings are still hanging from the ceiling] and then perhaps he'll describe how Margaret Clitheroe was "pressed to death" in the cellar. So, if you visit the Shambles Gallery you may go home with more than just a superb print or hand made pottery, you'll have visited a little piece of history as well. Review © 2007, Wcities |

York's traditional open-air market |
Newgate York YO1 United Kingdom +44 1904 55 1355 |
The open-air market has survived in York for centuries, although the move to its present location is quite recent. Now bordered by the Shambles, Parliament Street and Church Street, it is at the very heart of the city. Although the individual stalls do vary from day to day, you can be sure of colour, variety and a relaxed shopping experience. Butchers and Fishmongers have their spot by the Patrick Pool entrance. Whilst one stall sells specialty cheeses, another sells Italian bread and cakes, and along with fruit, vegetable and flower stalls, they all offer fresh produce and excellent value. Rolls of fabric, various clothing stalls and a hat seller can be found just off the Shambles. Bric-a-brac, second-hand books and handicrafts also have their place. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Anyone who likes books but doesn't like paying over the odds for them, will immediately feel at home in this York branch of the discount book retailers. Many of the paperbacks and hardbacks on sale here are surprisingly recent, and their selection of classic novels are at give away prices. As well as books, they have recently branched out into CD ROMs as well as art equipment and children's toys. This is one of the rare occasions that a shop can genuinely claim to have something for everybody, at prices that everybody can afford. Review © 2007, Wcities |

22 Colliergate York, North Yorkshire YO1 8BN United Kingdom +44 (0)1904 64 0822 http://www.yeomansoutdoors.co.uk/ |
Though not the largest in York, this is a well-stocked camping and outdoor pursuits store, located on the edge of the city centre. It is built on two floors, which means that its larger than it at first may seem. On the ground floor there is a good range of camping tools and accessories, so you should have no excuse for facing the elements unprepared. Upstairs there are tents and army surplus, consisting mostly of camouflage jackets and combat trousers. This store has also been known to hold camping and tent shows on the Knavesmire, better known as Yorks own racecourse. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Station Road York YO24 1AA United Kingdom +44 1904 62 1756 |
George Hudson, who was Mayor and also a Member of Parliament in the 1830s and 1840s, was mainly responsible for the development of the railway in York but it was Thomas Prosser who designed the current station and when it first opened on 25 June 1877, York Station was the centre of Britain's rail network and was, at that time, the largest station in the whole of Europe. It has a curved roof, which is 800 feet long and is supported by slender Corinthian columns. Review © 2007, Wcities |
