Allsports Ltd.

If you want to look sporty
12 Coney Street
York YO1 9NA
United Kingdom
+44 1904 64 0722
http://www.allsports.co.uk
Although this store sells more sports fashion items than actual sports equipment, there is plenty to choose from. And for those that insist upon worshiping at the red altar, there is a whole section devoted to Manchester United merchandise. There is a slightly antiseptic quality to the air here, counterbalanced by the rubber of all the boots and trainers. If such things don't faze you, then you will find this shop an ideal place to visit, especially if you just want to look sporty. Anyone wanting to actually physically do some sport may want to look elsewhere.

A bookshop plus a little bit extra
104 Micklegate
York YO1 6JX

+44 1904 62 3767
A favourite with locals and visitors, and situated not far from the ancient Micklegate Bar, this bookshop will tempt even the most abstemious. The shop itself is small and narrow but don't let this stop you browsing because one room just leads on into another. As well as tasteful greetings cards, there is a good selection of cut-price hardback and paperback books, beautiful reference books on art, history, biographies, fiction, children's books, cheap classics, and cookery books, not to mention a small selection of CDs and posters. For the tired and hungry, the vegetarian café at the back of the shop makes an excellent stop-off point.

This is a large sports equipment store, built on two floors and located right in the middle of York. They have an impressive range of footwear and sports fashion items, but strangely enough, they are one of the few sports shops in York that stock darts and darts accessories. Though by no means large, the selection of flights are of particular note for their excellent designs. The staff are friendly and helpful, thankfully not displaying that vacant stare so fashionable amongst shop staff these days, and they seem to be well informed when answering any questions.

Just a stroll from Micklegate Bar Museum is the French House antique shop. It's deceptively larger than can be imagined when you first enter through the front door from Micklegate. The main showroom is full of interesting antiques and on display is everything from china to furniture, as one might expect. On continuing down the passage, the visitor will be pleasantly surprised to find that it opens out into another, much larger room which specializes in antique bedsteads. Overhead are many different chandeliers, lamps and light fittings including some excellent examples in the Art Nouveau style, a style that has now become very much in demand again. Downstairs, in the basement, are even more exciting finds to be discovered by the discerning buyer.

The open-air market has survived in York for centuries, although the move to its present location is quite recent. Now bordered by the Shambles, Parliament Street and Church Street, it is at the very heart of the city. Although the individual stalls do vary from day to day, you can be sure of colour, variety and a relaxed shopping experience. Butchers and Fishmongers have their spot by the Patrick Pool entrance. Whilst one stall sells specialty cheeses, another sells Italian bread and cakes, and along with fruit, vegetable and flower stalls, they all offer fresh produce and excellent value. Rolls of fabric, various clothing stalls and a hat seller can be found just off the Shambles. Bric-a-brac, second-hand books and handicrafts also have their place.

A truly wonderful discovery, this appealing gift shop specialises in items created from different types of wood. There is a wide range of gifts to choose from, including a selection of well made, simple, traditional toys for children, such as skipping ropes and yo-yos. Small items such as coasters, bottle stops and cord pulls make unique yet inexpensive presents. Arguably the jewel in the crown is a variety of exquisite chess sets, complete with hand-painted figures including Alice In Wonderland and Robin Hood. Jewellery boxes in natural wood and nativity scenes made from olive wood, complete a stunning display.

United Kingdom

George Hudson, who was Mayor and also a Member of Parliament in the 1830s and 1840s, was mainly responsible for the development of the railway in York but it was Thomas Prosser who designed the current station and when it first opened on 25 June 1877, York Station was the centre of Britain's rail network and was, at that time, the largest station in the whole of Europe. It has a curved roof, which is 800 feet long and is supported by slender Corinthian columns.
