Hidden away on the outskirts of Pocklington, just 13 miles east of York, who would have thought such a beautiful and tranquil place existed. But exist it does, and as you wander along the linked pathways you will discover the upper and lower lakes, a walled garden, a Victorian bedding area, a bandstand, an aviary, a dovecote, rock gardens, a secret garden and even a shop and a tea room. Not forgetting the Stewart Collection Museum, which is the lifetime collection and memorabilia of Major Stewart, who once resided here at Burnby Hall. Travel east from York on the A1079, the gardens are signposted from each route into Pocklington.

http://www.castlehoward.co.uk
Situated only 15 miles north of York, Castle Howard is the perfect example of an English stately home set in a thousand acres of sweeping parkland. It is the ancestral home of the Howards and has been so for the last 300 years. Scenes from the film "Brideshead Revisited" were shot here. There is a plant center, a pottery studio, an exhibition wing, a lakeside café, a gift shop and even a little train that takes you round the parkland. You can also watch Jorvik glass being made and if the weather is fine then you can take a boat trip on the Great Lake, what more could the visitor ask for.

Wartime Museum
Prisoner of War Camp No 83
York, North Yorkshire YO17 6RT
United Kingdom
+44 1653 69 7777
http://www.edencamp.co.uk
This is not only educational for children but an experience and possibly a reminder of the past for some adults. Situated only 18 miles north-east of York and easily accessible by train or car, this could be a fun thing to do for all the family. There is even a mini assault course for Tiny Tot Commandos. The Camp is the brainchild of Stan Johnson who claims that this is the worlds only Modern History Theme Museum and attempts to recreate wartime conditions in the huts using tableaux scenes, special effects and lighting, smoke, sounds and smells from those poignant days. There is even a café called Prisoners Canteen offering culinary delights such as the Home Guard pastie and Doodlebug fishfingers.

Helmsley Castle

Formidable fortress
Helmsley Town Centre
York, North Yorkshire YO62 5AH
United Kingdom
+44 1439 77 0442
Helmsley Castle was built in the 12th century and so the first thing the visitor is confronted by is a spectacular double row of earth works, which helped make it a formidable fortress in its time. Later, in the Elizabethan period, extra buildings and rooms were added and it is in these rooms that the exhibitions are held. There is also, in tableau form, a history of the castle, which is rather an interesting, visual way of telling the tale. If you are going by road, then the castle is situated approximately 20 miles north of York and by far the best route is along the B1363.

Set in beautiful gardens, which are famous for its fine display of water lilies, is the Stewart Collection. Now in the hands of the Museum Trust, this unique collection contains a display of sporting trophies and many of the fascinating objects gathered by the late Major Stewart during his worldwide travels at the beginning of the 20th century. The museum is approached through the "Tea Rooms" and although only small, the museum is well worth visiting for this collection is probably the only one of its kind. An audiotape system is available to help the visitor understand the history of the collection.

Found on the outskirts of York, this is a modern swimming place, with an emphasis on fun. Although there is a small pool for anyone wanting to swim, and only swim, the larger pool will be of interest to most. There is a wave machine and a lazy river, though the currents aren't too strong. The slides are a particular favourite and for those with small children, there is a toddlers' area. Such fun can be had here.

For those who love all aspects of flying, there is something here for everyone. For many, this air museum will bring back memories of war-time Britain when night after night the air raid sirens sounded and the air was filled with the sound of the allied air forces taking to the skies to protect our country. For the young, the sight of these splendid aircraft seen right up close will bring much excitement. You can even visit the control tower and experience what it felt like in those days by listening to the sounds of a wartime bomber station.
