Shopping is great fun in York. The real beauty of this remarkable city is that it manages to cater for everybody, in every capacity and shopping is no exception. Whether you are searching for a special outfit, looking for a memento of your visit, or simply browsing, I defy you to come away empty handed. All good shopping trips begin with a spot of breakfast. Coffee Culture or The National Trust tearooms & shop in Goodramgate, can both provide you with an excellent start to the day. Here also you will find the Chocolate Store, a truly charming sweet shop, which should not be overlooked as you head off to York's main shopping areas.

Leaving Goodramgate turn into Kings Square, where some of York's best street entertainers perform. This leads into The Shambles, York's oldest street, and home to an engaging collection of unique gift shops full of character and individuality. Try Shambles Souvenirs & Gifts or Woodcarvers of the Shambles for an unusual gift or a reminder of the city. Avoiding peak times when visiting these small shops is a good idea, as they do get very busy. On leaving the Shambles you will enter Newgate Market. Amongst the wide variety of stalls, look out for Italian bread, English cheeses, fresh flowers and a good selection of fabrics. Newgate leads you into Parliament Street and St. Sampsons Square. This now pedestrianised area houses such names as Marks & Spencer, the Disney Store, Browns department store and Accessorize. You will also find John Barrie for menswear, Thorntons for (more) chocolates (got to keep the energy levels up!) and all the major high street banks, along with telephones and toilet facilities. Parliament Street hosts occasional events such as the St. Nicholas Fair in the run up to Christmas and York's food and drink festival. The local farmers market, a French market and fun fairs staged here, are all very popular with both locals and visitors. At the end of Parliament street is the Coppergate Centre. This modern centre features another Marks & Spencer store, this time containing homewares and a cafe, also The Body Shop, and the more upmarket Fenwicks. For a brief diversion away from the world of consumerism, the Jorvik Centre is also here, along with the Impressions Photography Gallery with its relaxing café.

Next look out for Waterstone's for books, and Habitat for home furnishings, both fine stores in High Ousegate, which leads you to Coney Street, one of York's premier shopping streets. Amongst the many women's and men's fashion retailers, you'll find the more specialisedin Mango and Kaliko. For High Street trends, visit the Gap, Racing Green, Top Shop, Warehouse, Wallis, and River Island. If it's sporting or outdoor gear you're after First Sport and Free Spirit are nearby.

Now is probably a good time to stop for some lunch, and it just so happens that Betty's Tea Rooms are situated at the bottom of Coney street in St Helens Square. This famous, stylish café offers a good variety of light meals and a mouth-watering selection of delicious cakes. Don't forget to take a look at the goodies displayed near the entrance, including hand-made chocolates, Betty's gift boxes and Yorkshire speciality cakes. Alternatively, opposite Betty's is Harker's, a spacious bar serving meals throughout the day. Next to Betty's is Burgin's Perfumery, a speciality shop of days gone by, full of charm and character. Knowledgeable staff can advise and guide you through the huge range of perfumes on offer, as well as tracking down some that are usually hard to find,.

Off St. Helens Square is Stonegate, where you will find some impressive jewellery and antique shops such as Stonegate Antiques Centre and Mulberry Hall with its exquisite china and porcelain. But for quality gifts of the cuddly variety Stonegate Teddy Bears, The English Teddy Bear Company and the Peter Rabbit Shop provide the 'bear necessities.'

Turning right at the end of Stonegate leads you into Petergate, and more quality fashion stores. For designer labels you must visit Sarah Coggles, which houses two floors of possibly the most stylish womenswear in York. Although Sarah Coggles does also stock quality menswear, in a wider range of styles Mannix, Robert Smart, Clubhouse and Paul Smith are also excellent shops. Compagnia, around the corner in Church Street has more exclusive labels, and if you turn into Swinegate, you'll find vintage clothing at Priestley's, the perfect place for Tea dresses, twin sets and fashions of the past. For those in need of refreshment, the Swinegate area has some of York's best cafes including El Piano, The Patio and wine bars such as Oscar's and Wilde's. See if you can spot the connection there...

Swinegate now forms one part of an area which recently generated the name "The Quarter" for itself. The United Traders of the Quarter include a variety of specialist crafts and clothing shops, printers, hairdressers, cafes, bars and restaurants who together have organised fundraising events and other community-based activities. The Quarter consistsof; Little Stonegate, Back Swinegate, Swinegate itself, Grape Lane and Coffee Yard. Back into Davygate which runs between Stonegate and Parliament Street, there are yet more big name fashion stores to tempt you, including French Connection, Laura Ashley, Hobbs, East, Monsoon and Gap Kids for the little ones tugging at your sleeves.

Betty's Tea Rooms

For the refined tea drinker
6 St Helen's Square
York YO1 2QP
United Kingdom
+44 1904 659142
Never failing to delight in service and food quality, Betty's is one of a number of exclusive high tea rooms found within the same neighbourhood. A genuine treasure in York, this is a popular place for both afternoon tea or an evening meal and you'll find the 20s style dining area, right down to the staff's attire, brings a rather old-time atmosphere. Every evening, between 6pm and 9pm, a pianist plays popular melodies and although there are plenty of seats, the sheer popularity of the place means it is always going to be busy.

A selection of teas and coffees are available, as is a large choice of pastries, scones and cakes. These cover all price ranges, from the perfectly reasonable to the very expensive. A full English breakfast costs about £10 and a teapot for one is around £2.50.

York YO1 7LS

Despite not being the largest in York, this is a popular city-centre cafe that serves filled baguettes and lunchtime snacks too. The staff are polite and helpful and the service is good, despite it often being busy. The decor is a rather plain, minimalist approach and although the seating is very comfortable, particularly upstairs, there is little of it. It's very popular amongst students and young people in general. For those "on the go" there is also a take away service available. There are many different types of coffee and a variety of snacks on offer.

The Latin experience
15-17 Grape Lane
York YO1 7HU
United Kingdom
+44 1904 61 0676
This is small and friendly café bar and eaterie with an international flavour. It has a warm, inviting atmosphere, as well as polite and helpful staff. There is a Latin theme to this restaurant and although there aren't many tables, it doesn't feel cramped or uncomfortable. The emphasis is on organic and vegetarian meals, and those who like to think first and eat later will feel at home here, although the food itself can be rather unexciting. Coffee, available by the jug, costs a little under £2 and soup with a roll costs about £3. Those with special dietary needs are particularly catered for. Both children and pianists are welcome.

Not forgetting the children, there is a toy department selling amongst other things the all important Barbie and Action Man. Sports equipment and accessories

This is a large sports equipment store, built on two floors and located right in the middle of York. They have an impressive range of footwear and sports fashion items, but strangely enough, they are one of the few sports shops in York that stock darts and darts accessories. Though by no means large, the selection of flights are of particular note for their excellent designs. The staff are friendly and helpful, thankfully not displaying that vacant stare so fashionable amongst shop staff these days, and they seem to be well informed when answering any questions.

This is a fashionably stylish café bar and restaurant right in the centre of York and within easy reach of most of the city's major attractions, such as the Minster and the Yorkshire Museum. Harkers is a bright and lively place to eat, although it may appear to some to be a little on the formal side. The main dining area is large and decorative which somehow manages to create a relaxing atmosphere. The menu is varied and will contain something to satisfy almost anyone's taste. There is an impressive wine menu and a good selection of continental beers. A bottle of house wine is about £7 and food prices can vary between £5 and £13 depending on your choice. A vegetable stir-fry, for instance, is about £6.

One of the gateways to the original Roman fortress is the site that Kings Square now occupies. Until the year 1937 it was a graveyard and if you look very carefully you will notice that some of the old tombstones were used to pave the square - so tread very carefully! Today, it is a lively place where jugglers and buskers vie to entertain the many tourists. If you glance up at the roof tops you may spy the strange sight of an almost realistic stone cat stalking an equally realistic stone pigeon.

Victuals of yore
30/32 Goodramgate
York YO1 2LG
United Kingdom
+44 1904 65 9282
Adjoining the Treasurers House and a stone's throw from the Minster, the National Trust's York Tea Rooms are rather more than the usual tea-and-scones affair sometimes found at Trust properties. An array of cakes and pastries, baked on the premises, jostle on a menu packed with freshly prepared meals and snacks, ranging from sandwiches to a full English breakfast. The National Trust has also recently expanded its bill of fare to include a variety of historical dishes commonly eaten in the Middle Ages, which the more adventurous might wish to sample. Spiced red onion and spinach upside down tart, anyone? The staff are friendly and the interior could be described as somewhere between modern and rustic. The old fireplace and some wooden beams have been retained but the furniture is green and cream and modern in design; the old and the new seem uneasy together. But the prices are fairly reasonable, and all proceeds go towards the Trust's conservation work in Yorkshire.

The open-air market has survived in York for centuries, although the move to its present location is quite recent. Now bordered by the Shambles, Parliament Street and Church Street, it is at the very heart of the city. Although the individual stalls do vary from day to day, you can be sure of colour, variety and a relaxed shopping experience. Butchers and Fishmongers have their spot by the Patrick Pool entrance. Whilst one stall sells specialty cheeses, another sells Italian bread and cakes, and along with fruit, vegetable and flower stalls, they all offer fresh produce and excellent value. Rolls of fabric, various clothing stalls and a hat seller can be found just off the Shambles. Bric-a-brac, second-hand books and handicrafts also have their place.

Northern-European in style, with its bleached wooden furniture, this small, friendly restaurant is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets, and so offers a quieter, more laid-back alternative to eating out in York. The exterior is an unusual shade of peach, but don't let that put you off. Once inside, there is a warm and cosy atmosphere, aided by the helpful and efficient staff. By day this café serves snacks and light refreshments but transforms itself into a candlelit restaurant for evening visitors. The menu contains many examples of good traditional Yorkshire food, and prices are very reasonable.

Not to be overlooked however, Sarah Coggles' own label offers beautifully tailored clothes that deserve their place alongside the more well-known labels. If you're looking for something to wear, then this is the shop for you.

Shambles

Mentioned in the Domesday Book

This is the most famous street in York and the only one to be listed in the Doomsday book. It's quaint and very picturesque with its narrow cobbled streets and the timbered shops leaning so close they nearly touch each other. It used to be a street of medieval butcher shops and slaughter houses, which must have been a real health hazard in those days as visitors to this street would have had to tread very cautiously through the discarded offal. The street probably gets its name from the low wide shelves called "shammels" on which the butchers displayed their meat. Now it's a street of souvenir and coffee shops.

Sharing its name with the famous playwright and socialite, this modern restaurant, with a distinctly cosmopolitan atmosphere, is tucked away behind some of York's smaller streets; newcomers to the city may find it a little tricky to discover. Although a bit on the small side, its intimate surroundings help set the mood and there are enough tables to make sure that getting seated isn't too much of a problem. Wilde's has a varied menu, which covers all tastes, from Mexican to Italian to traditional English dishes.

There is a wide range of gifts to choose from, including a selection of well made, simple, traditional toys for children, such as skipping ropes and yo-yos. Small items such as coasters, bottle stops and cord pulls make unique yet inexpensive presents. Arguably the jewel in the crown is a variety of exquisite chess sets, complete with hand-painted figures including Alice In Wonderland and Robin Hood. Jewellery boxes in natural wood and nativity scenes made from olive wood, complete a stunning display.
