Free art classes in Yosemite Village |
Yosmite Village Yosemite, CA 95389 United States +1 209 372 0200 http://www.yosemite.org |
The center is a real find for both adults and children. Located south of the Village Store, it houses a lovely selection of art books with paintings and photos of Yosemite, plus how-to books and books about artists who have worked in Yosemite. You will also find art supplies, including paper, paints, easels and brushes. However, the real surprise is the availability of free daily art classes. These can be hard to get into during the high summer season, so be sure to plan ahead. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Lovely and sometimes wet but worth the visit |
Bridalveil Falls parking area (Hwy 41) Yosemite, CA 95389 United States +1 209 372 0200 |
About half a mile round-trip, this trail can get crowded in summer, but it affords breathtaking views of the falls, with water spilling over 600 feet to the valley floor and looking just like a bridal veil. Beware, you may get damp from the spray. Start from and return to the Bridal Veil parking area, located about 10 miles southwest of the Visitor Center on Highway 41. There is wheelchair access with assistance. The trail may be closed during winter months; call first. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Scenic views and a strenuous hike |
Southside Dr (Yosemite Valley) Yosemite, CA 95389 United States +1 209 372 0200 |
This is a very strenuous hike; with an altitude gain of 3,200 feet. You may be disappointed when you get there because you will find that you could have reached the same place by bus. On the other hand, the trail is lovely, and you will feel virtuous because you spent four or five hours hiking. Take water with you and wear a hat as well as comfortable hiking shoes or boots. For your safety, it is recommended that you complete this hike before dark. The trail may be closed in winter. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Millions of gallons of water |
Hetch Hetchy Rd Yosemite, CA 95389 United States +1 209 372 1000 |
Here, you can see millions of gallons of water and a spectacular waterfall in a pristine setting. Do not let its beauty fool you, the reservoir's purpose is to supply the San Francisco area with water as well as electrical power. This reservoir is located in a secluded and quiet area of the park making it a great location for picnics or meditation. In addition, this place has trailheads for several hikes. The road to the reservoir is closed from October to June. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Miwok and Paiute artifacts in Yosemite Valley |
Yosemite Museum (Yosemite Village) Yosemite, CA 95389 United States +1 209 372 0200 http://www.yosemite.org/index.... |
The Miwok and Paiute people were, and are, the true natives of the Yosemite Valley. This exhibit gives real insight into the way they lived back in the 1850s, and it traces their history and culture from that time to the present. In addition to the displays, there are often demonstrations of basket weaving, beadwork and traditional games. You will also learn the unsavory ways in which early white settlers treated the people of this region. This exhibit is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The village is setup in a more or less natural setting behind the Yosemite Museum Gallery. There is no fee for this attraction. Weather permitting, the staff of the Indian Cultural Exhibit puts on demonstrations of basket weaving, beadwork and game playing. Huge, ancient trees inside the park |
Mariposa Grove Yosemite, CA 95389 United States +1 209 372 0200 |
The trees in this grove are more than 3,000 years old, more than 50 feet around, and reach up over 300 feet seemingly to touch the sky. You can drive to the lower edge of the grove, but parking is strictly limited and you may wait in line for quite a while; better to take the free shuttle from the Wawona General Store, which departs every 15 minutes from 9a to 4:30p. Note: Trailers and motor homes are not permitted on the Mariposa Grove Road. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nearby you can explore four short trails, each one devoted to a different ecological niche: forest, river, talus and fen. Large dam in operation in the northwest park area |
Hetch Hetchy Road Yosemite, CA 95389 United States +1 209 372 1000 http://www.hetchhetchy.org/ |
This dam is just plain huge, and is a spectacular sight to visit. Built in July 1923, and at that time was the largest single structure on the West Coast, it rises 430 feet high and spans 900 feet. The dam holds the water from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which is the water supply for the San Francisco area. The water can be released through 14 outlets to control the water levels. Spectacular and breathtaking views in the park |
Wawona Road (Highway 41) Yosemite, CA 95389 United States +1 209 372 1000 |
This breathtaking and spectacular sight is located on Highway 41 just north of Wawona, and just south of the Valley Floor. This popular spot is the most photographed view of the valley. It received its name because it is the first view of the valley after exiting the tunnel. Be sure to drive slow and watch for pedestrians crossing from one of the two parking areas. Take plenty of film and batteries for your camera. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ride a real steam train at the park's south entrance |
56001 Hwy 41 Yosemite, CA 93623 United States +1 559 683 7273 http://www.ymsprr.com/ |
This train is a restoration of the narrow-gauge Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company Railroad. The four-mile track was rebuilt using original techniques, and it runs two vintage shay steam locomotives pulling a few passenger cars. You will hear the engine whistle, snort, blow and more. You will also be in the forest and get a good feel for what logging was probably like in the 19th century. The trains run on a variety of daily schedules from March through October.
