Head south on Highway 41 to the little village of Wawona, original staging area for visitors to the park. Enjoy breakfast in the Wawona Hotel's gorgeous dining room and take in the peaceful setting. After breakfast and a stroll around the grounds, spend the rest of the morning exploring the Yosemite Pioneer History Center, a living museum dedicated to showcasing life as it was in Yosemite's early days. Park staff play various characters from Yosemite's history. Try as you might, you will rarely get them to break out of character.

For lunch, you might try a picnic in the small grove near the museum. A gift shop/convenience store can help with the necessities, and rest rooms are available.

From the parking lot, catch the free shuttle to Mariposa Grove. Visitors are permitted to drive to the grove, but the narrow winding road and lack of adequate parking can make this frustrating. It is not unusual to see a long line of cars waiting for entrance, while the shuttle bus zips right by. Once at the grove, you can choose to hike or take the open-air tram through the magnificent trees. The tram takes about an hour; hiking takes considerably longer.

Hungry? On Saturdays, the Wawona Hotel hosts a down-home barbecue outside on the lawn. If you are lucky, there just might be a barn dance where visitors and park staff whoop it up together for some old-fashioned fun.

Located in the southern end of the park on the site of Galen Clark's original lodge, this hotel recalls the charm of the 19th century. The beautiful old building, complete with long white verandas, was built in 1879 and is now a National Historic Landmark. Several smaller lodges and cottages cluster around the sweeping green lawn. The atmosphere is quiet and comfortable, and each quaint room is furnished with charming antiques. Rooms are available with or without a bath and rates vary accordingly.
