Note: Do not attempt this tour November-May; the road is snowed in nine months of the year. Begin the day's drive across the High Country by heading north from Yosemite Valley on Big Oak Flat Road. Take the turnoff onto Tioga Road, and take your next left to the Tuolumne Grove of Big Trees. This relatively small stand of Giant Sequoias offers one particular tree of interest. The Dead Giant, no longer alive but still standing, was a drive-through tree until the road closed in 1933. Take the self-guided nature tour for an easy 30-minute walk through the grove.

Back on Tioga Road, head east into the park's interior. Enjoy the drive toward White Wolf and stop for lunch at the quaint White Wolf Lodge. After lunch, continue east on 120 toward Tuolumne Meadows and park at the Visitor Center. You will find food and other conveniences in this rustic setting. Check out the Visitor Center for information on the walking and hiking opportunities. Remember that you are at 8,600 feet, where even mild exertion can be difficult if you are not used to the elevation. Be sure to take plenty of water and a good first aid kit when you venture out.

When heading back, stop at the scenic overlook at Olmstead Point (2.5 miles west of Tenaya Lake). While the park offers many astounding views, these of Tenaya Canyon, Clouds Rest and the back side of Half Dome are truly unique.

If time allows, continue your tour of northern Yosemite by heading toward Hetch Hetchy north on Evergreen Road. Visit the O'Shaughnessy Dam and Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, and stop for dinner at the Evergreen Lodge for a laid-back but well-prepared meal.

Top of Half Dome Hike

Take on the summit
Happy Isles Shuttle Stop #16
(Yosemite Valley)
Yosemite, CA 95389

If you are in very good shape and willing to spend a long day hiking, the difficult trek to the top of Half Dome may be for you. It is considered extremely strenuous, with an elevation gain of almost 5,000 feet. Start at Happy Isle Shuttle Stop Number 16 and work your way through the crowds visiting Vernal Falls, and begin a series of switchbacks to the top. The trail rises and falls a fair amount until you get close to Nevada Falls and from there the trail continues to Half Dome. Be warned, however, that the last 200 yards up the back of the dome require you to use steel cable handrails as you scramble up. Roughly 600 people make this trek every day in the summer, but it is not easy. Be sure to bring water, and wear a hat as well as comfortable walking shoes or boots. The trail may be closed in winter. Since this hike can take up to 12 hours to complete, it is recommended that you start early in the morning. For your safety it is best to complete this hike before dark. Check website for more information.
