Zaragoza, a service-industry town, offers every visitor an appropriate range of hotels, both for quality and variety. It enjoys a well-deserved reputation for both the hospitality of its people and the excellence of its infrastructures. Events diverse in character and magnitude (conventions, exhibitions, fairs) have testified to this fact in recent years.

As far as tourism is concerned, it is no minor destination. Being a link between Madrid and Barcelona, given the richness of its historical legacy, and for the possibilities it offers for shopping and its attractive nightlife, the city is a must for tourists visiting Spain. So let's have a look at some of its many hotels, bearing in mind the different customers each lodging suits.

Zona Centro (Centre)

Both for those in town for pleasure and those coming on business, in Plaza de España - the very heart of the city - and its surrounding area, there is an extraordinary choice of hotels. You might want to try the new and elegant Hotel Silken Reino de Aragón, the traditional Hotel Husa Rey Alfonso I, or the more sober Hotel Maza. Commuting is easy from all of them, since most of the city's bus lines have stops in the area.

If you prefer a quiet street in Zona Centro, instead of a main avenue, on either side of Paseo Independencia you'll find comfortable hotels, like the Palafox, the city's only five star, the historic and luxuriant building of the NH Gran Hotel, the modern and well-balanced Hotel Husa Don Yo and the sought-after Hotel Goya. We can also include here Hotel Meliá Zaragoza. These and those mentioned before, with the exception of the Maza, have halls suitable for business conventions and meetings as well as celebrations and banquets.

Considering the old part of town, in Plaza del Pilar itself you will find four hotels of different category, price, decoration and age. They are Hotel Tibur, a three star; Hotel Las Torres, Hostal Ambos Mundos and Hostal Plaza, all of them bearing two stars. The difference between the demarcations of hotel and hostal depends on certain features such as having an independent entrance, width of the corridors and number of rooms; nevertheless, some hostales are as comfortable as medium-range hotels.

Old Town

As you walk along the charming narrow streets of the old town, or "casco antiguo" as it is popularly known, you will find the peculiar and lovable Hotel Sauce, with its individual decoration in each room, the modern Hotel El Príncipe, and just opposite, Hotel Santiago, slightly older and cheaper.

If you are looking for a central location with the added advantage of being near the Madrid-Barcelona bus station, there are several options: Hotel Conquistador, Hostal Paraíso and Hostal El Carmen all have this advantage. At an acceptable distance are Hotel Gran Vía and Hotel Zaragoza Royal, both most suitable for both tourists and business people. Both are very near El Corte Inglés and the distinguished shopping area of Paseo de las Damas and its surroundings. Here we can mention Hotel Boston, for its “intelligent” technology, services and remarkable offering of suites and rooms that make it a favourite among celebrities, professional sports people and other socially relevant personalities.

Other Neighbourhoods

The so-called Zona Centro and the old town contain the greatest number of hotels, but in other parts, with more open spaces and different assets, there are many to choose from. In the neighbourhood of La Romareda, very near the most important hospitals, the football stadium and the Palacio de Congresos, you have Hotel Green Romareda. In the same radius, a bit further from the city centre, there are very functional hotels much appreciated by businessmen: NH Sport, NH Orús, and Cesaraugusta III. All three are very near El Portillo train station. And if you are attracted to the Delicias neighbourhood, the aforementioned three, Hotel Delicias or the small and cheap Hostal Aybar could be the best options.

Finally, and as an offer not to be neglected in a city which boasts 3231 rooms and 5991 beds among three-, four- and five-star hotels only, we must mention a few of the hotels in the outskirts of town, in various directions: Hotel Restaurante El Águila on the road to Logroño; Hotel Aragón on the n-II heading towards Lérida; Hotel Restaurante Las Galias on the Zaragoza-Huesca road and the famous Hotel Casino de Zaragoza, in the village of Alfajarín, on the road to Barcelona, a favourite for those who enjoy casinos with all the trappings of tradition.

This is just a tiny representation of the lodging possibilities offered by Zaragoza, a modern and welcoming city, ever evolving in new efforts to provide visitors with comfort, good taste, magnificent service and good prices.

Hostal Ambos Mundos

Old Furniture and Prices
Plaza del Pilar, 16
Zaragoza 50001
Spain
+34 976 29 9704
This hotel dates back to 1954, and if its walls could speak, no doubt they would tell thousands of stories. It is centrally located, and acts as a point of reference for many travellers to the city. On entering the hotel you get the distinct feeling that time has stood still and that very few modern innovations have managed to creep in since it was built. For those who are looking to stay in the old part of the city and do not want to spend too much money, this is an ideal option. All areas of the city are within easy reach.

Hostal Aybar

A very homely place
Conde Aranda, 142
Zaragoza 50003
Spain
This is practically a family home or apartment, located very near the Aljafería Palace, and within easy walking distance of the popular, lively neighbourhood of Delicias, an area which is also good for shopping. The old town is reasonably nearby too. This kind of boarding house is most suitable for those who simply want a place to sleep or relax. Do not expect great luxuries. Location and price are its main assets. Some of the rooms have a bathroom, some just a wash basin, and others share a common bathroom.

Hostal Paraíso

Central, simple & well connected
Paseo Pamplona, 23
Zaragoza 50005
Spain
+34 976 21 7608
For travellers arriving in Zaragoza by bus from Madrid or Barcelona, this one-star boarding house is the first to meet the eye. It is only a few steps away from the station, if you walk in the direction of Plaza Aragón. It is housed in a modest building which also contains private homes. Some of the rooms look out on the Paseo de Pamplona and from these the arch of Puerta del Carmen can be seen. It is very well located, near both the old town and the commercial centre of the city.

Hostal Plaza

Central and Quirky
Plaza del Pilar, 14 entresuelo
Zaragoza 50001
Spain
+34 976 29 4830
Housed in one of Plaza del Pilar's main buildings, this hotel was renovated in 1997. The reception and hall are decorated with antique furniture and details which impart a very homely touch. The furniture dates back to 1900 and is painted black because of a legal decree of the time which imposed greater taxes on unpainted wooden furniture. Stepping into the hotel, it is hard to imagine the charmingly decorated rooms you are about to come across. If you're lucky enough to get a room with a view onto the plaza, Zaragoza's Ayuntamiento (city council) will be right opposite you.

Hostal Santiago

Central and very cheap
Santiago, 3
Zaragoza 50001
Spain
+34 976 39 4550
This two star hostel opened in the mid-eighties. The hostel is housed in an old building in Zaragoza's old town. Actually, as is the case with many Spanish hostels, only one or two floors of the building have been converted into accommodation for visitors. Offering its customers the possibility of a central location for very little money, it is also near one of the city's main nightlife destinations. Rooms are simple, and not all have their own bathroom or air-conditioning. These, naturally enough, are the cheapest.

This three-star hotel has been renovated and decorated in such good taste that it has been awarded prizes by renowned national guides. Some of these awards are part of the decoration at reception. The modern style and the good colour combination used in the decor make for a very pleasant atmosphere, discernible as soon as you walk through the door. It also has the advantage of being very near the train station. As for the old part of town and the commercial centre, they are a little further away, but can be reached on foot in about ten minutes. Guests have access to a medical service.

Built in 1985, this is a simple but comfortable three-star hotel, which chose to invest in features necessary for the well-being of its guests, rather than in luxury. Centrally located, it is very near the station for buses to Madrid and Barcelona and El Portillo train station. It is also within easy walking of the old part of town and the commercial centre. All the rooms are sound-proof, which makes being in such a busy area a positive advantage instead of a nuisance. The car park is in the same building as the hotel.

Old Town

Zaragoza
Spain
Most of the important ancient monuments and buildings are found here in the Old Town. On the western end of this area is Aljafería Palace, a Moorish castle surrounded by a moat and gardens and today the parliament of Aragón. It is in the old town proper, however, where we find the greatest number of important buildings, like the huge Plaza del Pilar, where the famous and grandiose basilica stands, along with the Lonja Palace, Seo Cathedral, the Roman Forum Museum and San Juan de los Panetes Church with its leaning tower, the mudéjar tower of La Zuda and the remains of the Roman wall. This is a very lively area, full of shops, narrow streets, squares and pleasant corners, with many tapas bars and a busy nightlife.

Plaza España

Central square
Avenida Independencia y Calle Coso
Zaragoza 50001
Spain
Intersecting Calle Coso, Plaza España is the centre of the city, and the place where the numbering of streets begins. This is also the beginning of Paseo de la Independencia, the city's main street. In the middle of the square stands the Monument to the Martyrs (1904), by Agustin Querol, a memorial not only to the Christian martyrs of Roman Zaragoza but also the defenders of the city against the French invaders during the War of Independence (1808). The monument is in the shape of a tower and at its top, an angel holds an injured Aragonese peasant. On one side of the square stands the Provincial Government, a neo-classic building dating back to the forties.

Zona Centro

Zaragoza
Spain
This area is traditionally the one of greatest interest for visitors. It includes the old town proper, with its natural extensions to the east, Barrio de la Magdalena to the west, and Predicadores (also known as San Pablo or barrio del Gancho), plus the area delineated by Avenida César Augusto and Paseo de María Agustín (where Misericordia bullring stands). The flea market is also nearby, as is the Pignatelli Building, an eighteenth-century hospital containing a church with gilt domes that now houses the Diputación General de Aragón (regional government).
